Professional Road Cycling is one of a few sports in which no boundaries separate the athletes from the fans. But given the proximity of these crowds, incidents are inevitable.

The Tour de France didn't allow gears untill 1937, 34 years after the first systems appeared. Maybe it's time to cut loose with another "tradition", and just have a second event, a bike brawl, where the cyclists get protective gear and lances, and whoever impales the most spectators wins

That lady caused almost the entire peloton to crash and injured several people through her blatant disregard for everyone's safety. And rather than initially owning up to what she did, she left the scene and evaded police until the media coverage was too great she knew she'd be identified sooner or later. Punishment? 1,200 €. @@oIJustForFunIo unrealistic? why... if this is one of the cases when the person directly (through physical contact) causes a crash leading to serious injury (broken bones), it is reasonable to call it "causing unintentional grievous bodily harm" which does carry a prison sentence of up to a number of months to years in many countries. whilst an actual prison is usually at the top end of the severity scale for this type of crime/infringement, given that this case clearly possesses extenuating circumstances calling for a more severe punishment than average, I would say it is certainly not out of the realm of legally described possibilities

I drove in the front caravan at the Amgen Tour of California and saw Antler Boy every day. We stopped to talk to him just once, during the stage in Livermore, and all I can say is: there is nobody home in there. He spoke an entire word salad that made us give him a wide berth every day thereafter. We kind of suspected as much from someone who puts horns on a football helmet and drives halfway across a country, but one visit confirmed it.

As nostalgic as it may be for some, a challenge, for others, the simple fact is this; In the modern era of global travel, a camera and Internet connection in everyone's pocket, Facebook, X (formally known as twatface), Instagram, TikTok and any number of other social media pages as well as so many so-called 'influencers' all wanting turn their 10 second video into a virus, or at the very least join those that used to say 'Hi Mum, Im on TV!, there is simply no way to change the behaviour of the mind-numbed masses in a way to make cycle racing through the streets safe for competitors and spectators alike. simple solution: make the punishments harsh. On the roadways in America you will see signs that say "hit a worker and get 100,000$ fine and 10 years in prison". You can do something similar for Tour de france to keep people out of their way.

The public is oblivious but the Tour de France organizers are incredible. When they do stages in Belgium (where I worked at national level for 3 stages), Spain, Holland, they have drastic requirements, safety meetings and still check the road 3 times the day before ; not a place without a flagger, policeman or a barrier. And in France, nothing, people on the shoulders, in the ditches and in the middle of the road. For spectacular actions?

In my territory there has been the cycling world cup in 2020 and no incident occurred, maybe because in this part of Italy 1 person over 3 is a ciclyst myself included, so we showed respect to the athletes. In my opinion the tour de france is a global reference for ciclysm so a lot of people are going there just because they are exhibitionists that don't care at all about what really happening but because they want their moment of visibility, resulting in to destroy all of what a noble sport show would be.

Spectators and officials are an important part of any sport, but the line has to be drawn short of their being able to affect outcomes. Race organizers and sanctioning bodies must be held accountable when fans are allowed to encroach and officials or media act in a way that affects the race. That will fix the problem. They'll either provide tighter control or they'll just stop organizing races.

Freedom of movement, freedom of expression and in particular freedom of press are all well and good when there is a built in discipline to behave oneself in people. There is no such built-in mechanism. So people feeling entitled to the mentioned liberties will continue screwing up events (any event for that matter). Will organisers be able to control the crowd? I don't know but take a look at rally sport for comparison, especially the 90's and 00's era. I don't think it got much better since then.

Road cycling should probably learn a lesson or two from WRC rally, which has had issues of it's own with the spectators. The difference is, that in rally lack of crowd control has lead to numerous spectators losing their lives. Barriers cannot be put everywhere, but posts and plastic lines can be put in quite a few locations, as they are cheap, fast and easy to install. Effective route clearing is needed - something similar to how law enforcement might clear a path for a motorcade (lead vehicles far ahead, bikes etc. here and there to keep the spectators out). Publishing maps of prohibited and designated spectator areas might help too. Reckless spectators need to be taken seriously. If everything else fails, officials must have the framework and guts to suspend or cancel a race if spectators are too reckless. Otherwise we'll see more severe injuries, perhaps even loss of life.

You don’t need to put barriers over the whole 2000+ mile race but it should be set up for the last few miles always and there should always be a police detail in large numbers there especially close to the finish line and it should be at certain major points. That’s the thing with public roads though isn’t it? You don’t own them. So tough tits basically. Go complain to your local authority, if enough people don’t want it they’ll move it. If you’re just a grumpy guss and more people like the sport or the economic boost to the areas you’ll just have to lump it

I'm not moved. Set up a race through public space on public lands, through cities and towns, and you take your chances. It is unfortunate, but human nature is human nature. There can be no expectation of freedom from fools. Because you can afford the luxury of an expensive sport doesn't give you the right to the commons.

Fans don’t care about the sport, just getting on tv.

Some moron threw shotgun cartridges onto the circuit at my local race track where motorcycles were racing, some of the cartridges landed in longer grass at the side of the track and were detonated a couple of days later by a grass cutting machine, could have been fatal.

When little Sabastian wants to join the road bike race, you get the heck out of his way and feel honored that he participated in your race. That little horse is a gosh darn national treasure. (Search Parks and Rec little Sabastian) You were 10,000 candles in the wind, you majestic little horse...lol

Well, ngl, I got triggered watching this. 1:07 "you get irresponsible grown men". Why do you specify that you get irresponsible grown men? One of the biggest crash in the video was caused by a woman, and we see other videos as well with women just crossing the road and causing a crash. But no, men are the problem here as well. I get that I'm triggered by a small thing, but I'm starting to think it's not a small thing anymore. If everyone is saying something small, that thing becomes big.

Out of control? Considering the only value to society that bicycle races provide is entertainment, the fans who "interact" are contributing as much as the riders. The race organizers intentionally plan routes through the densest part of large cities to draw crowds to the race. They know this will happen.

If this happened in any developing nation hosting the tournament, everyone around the world would embarrass them. Just because this happens in France people are supposed to be okay with it, I guess.
