What grinds my gears about most about western media reworking things for the Chinese market is often there isnt the "normal" version and "safe for China" version, they just change it entirely and don't bother with two versions releasing the same censored cut in all markets so in effect a lot of media we consume becomes censored by China for us

I had a Chinese friend that I met while he was an exchange student, then a few months after he returned to China, I tried calling him to ask when he was planning on coming back, but he never answered the phone, so I called his brother and he told me that he can't ever come back because he invested all his savings in "Evergrande Real Estate" (which was the CCP owned real estate developer company that went bankrupt), as a result, he ended up broke and homeless. He told me that his brother had been attending protests, demanding the CCP give back his life savings, he also told me about how his brother was advocating for greater freedom and the downfall of the CCP, then 1 day, while his brother was at a protest, he was caught, and hasn't been seen or heard from since

That's quite unfortunate. I have relatives caught up in it too, although not to the point of homelessness. The Evergrande Real Estate bankruptcy was a big thing in China and a wake up call to most. Since most people believe its safer and more profitable to invest in housing, they basically throw all their money at it; however, there has been signs of possible bankruptcy before and report/warnings, but people just ignore them, believing in the sheer size of the company. This is why I am actually really worried about people playing up black myth wu kong the way they are the fact is 75% of the people playing that game are from China. If you removed all the Chinese players you would have a few hundred thousand players, but it wouldn’t even break 1 million. I’m worried that it’s success but more importantly than the fact that so many are just blanketly touting it as a massive success like as if it’s some global phenomenon or something that is even greater than games like cyberpunk 2077 for instance (a game that was at lunch anyways banned in China, and therefore unable to take advantage of the market, making an unfair comparison in the first place to say that black myth is selling better than it was) It makes me worry that more companies are going to try and look at that success and then try to market and change things more and more and more to fit the Chinese censorship.
@Jackie-z6g3 ай бұрын
They are not even subtle about it, the guideline of cens... I mean review. Yet many critics and non-Chinese gamers seem to just ignore this document that came directly from the publisher themselves. Sure, some "journalists" are partially to blame here for they think "lack of inclusion" is something more worthy of publication than actual evidence of pushing of a certain political agenda. And if you really want to see the most scorched earth praising of BM:WK, Reuters has one article where they translated part of what media in China said about the game. It literally includes the following sentence "the default language of AAA gaming is now Chinese".
@spagooter18073 ай бұрын
Well it’s simple when American companies go to the shitter because of incompetence and mismanagement people turn to foreign studios. The best games of the last few years were from foreign studios Baldurs Gate 3 was European, Elden Ring was Japanese, and meanwhile American studios stopped catering to their audience and have probably been intentionally dropping quality together to cut costs. I’m all for foreign competition it reminds companies why they have to be competitive. What do American studios have Suicide squad where you have to spend on a battle pass with soulless content to even get cool items frankly American companies in a lot of industries need to be reminded how to be competitive.i dislike American gaming studios now because they cut corners and release shit products and then complain when a foreign company kicks their ass as if they deserve to be industry leaders by default. I coukd have predicted the decline of American companies in general looking at the Chinese exchange students doing more advanced trig and programming in high school than I touched in college. In America people get paid a shit ton to make sub par products and we lost a lot of our older generation talent in programming and many industries that we desperately need to get back. All the experienced programmers and devs probably don’t want to work for these companies seeing what they are releasing now. The free market never intended for shit products and companies to continue succeeding and lowering the quality of the products this is not just a gaming company issue and I’m all for foreigners bringing a better quality product since we dropped the ball it makes them realize what they need to do to be competitive. It will get the desk idiots that are trying to lower the quality across the board fired because they realize other companies and competitors are emerging and bringing some actual heat I mean Baldurs Gate 3 had more content than three western AAA releases combined they are clowns now. I do think it’s a my generation of Americans thing as well they failed to realize that the free market doesn’t give participation trophies like our education system does and they have to fight to control the market. Companies will give a better product when there is the threat of new arrivals to the market threatening their dominance. I honestly don’t give a shit about the video games aspect anymore cause I’m worried about Boeing that was an eye opening case study into how when American companies are sheltered from losses and always win contracts they stop caring about quality through and through and those guys run our defense contracts.
@spagooter18073 ай бұрын
@@MrTheBest2WasTaken I wish I could say America was only floundering with its AAA gaming industry but that’s far from the case.
@Jackie-z6g3 ай бұрын
@@spagooter1807 I welcome healthy competition in the game industry, but not a product that is not subtle about pushing a certain ideology. One important thing is being overlooked here: BG3 and ER were made by companies that can be independent from the government of their country, but BM:WK is not the case. Because of the economic and judicial system in China, the notion of "independent companies from the government" does not exist. If the Winnie the Pooh wants this game in a certain way, Game Science cannot say no without being dissolved and CEO arrested. State media already tells you what those in power consider this game to be: a weapon that "conquered the Western gaming culture" and a phenomena proves "Chinese soft power supremacy". Remember, we are talking about an authoritarian state here, so what the people think does not matter, and if you know the rampant nationalism in China in recent years, I am not surprised if a large portion of the population agree with what the propaganda says. US AAA gaming industry is not as in a bad shape as you put it. They are not just making the game you like, but free market only guarantees the most profitable, not the best quality wise (whatever it means) or even the most played, to continue its existence. Call of Duty has remained the juggernaut for more than 10 years globally, and Fortnite is far from being dethroned in the revenue department. They have no problem hiring new "talented programmers" despite firing 10% of their employees. Let's not try to grand stand here. People will sell their dignity if the price is high enough and when they are threatened by student debt of their computer science degree. As of Chinese international students in the US, how many of them are planning for stay Chinese in 10 years? There is a reason why the word "immigration" has been a sensitive word for years and the word "run" was banned for quite a while.

As a hong kong born and raised; thankyou for the video! Btw the reason we don't share the same legal system is because we were once a British colony. For 200 years. So yes, the culture is massively different. And the protest was to fight off cccp's idea of extradition from hk to china communist legal areas. Needless to say, we won't survive if extradition is actually legal.

One thing I really appreciate about this episode is that, despite being part of the Tegridy saga, it harkens back to a lot of classic South Park. From goading a foreign power to Fingerbang to even referencing the fact that Butters used to play drums back in Christian Rock Hard. Just a nice little reminder that, even though Randy has taken over for a bit, it's still South Park at its core.
