If I'm not miss remembering, the reason they did it was because the fine for swearing was only 500$ so they asked comedy Central for a half million to make the episode and had it approved. The fact that people still discuss it seems to indicate it was a good investment. They got a billion dollar deal a few years back. Half a million is nothing compared to that kind of success.

I have a fun fact about the French dubbing team of South Park : when they started dubbing it, they received the uncensored version and bakc the artistic director of the dubbing studio was a very old lady. They where worried "Can we say assfucking on TV ?" The old lady answered "there is nothing against it... so make it worse" The French version is WAYYYY more vulgar than the american one and it's perfect

I REALLY love the flawless season 5 through 8 run, this really is when the show finally found its path, its characters personalities and became the standard for modern SP. It’s enhanced for me by the fact that the first episode of season 7 is kind of like a reboot of the first episode.

Great point. The thing is, it can be used very well, but it's usually not. A great example is in the exact episode Blooms is talking about. Around 3 minutes into the episode, Kyle stands up and goes to the kitchen, not caring about the show. Stan: But you're gonna miss it. They're going to say shit and you're gonna miss it. Kyle: I don't really give a fuck. It's funny because it's subverting expectation, not for using the word itself. It's a fine line, but an important one

One example in my mine was The Walking Dead. AMC did not wanna pay extra money to curse. And having Rick Grimes, a grizzled zombie apocalypse survivor saying “They’re Screwing with the wrong people” as a built up moment to end a season on. It took me out of the moment. And Negan infamously cursed every sentence in the comics to sell his crudeness and immaturity. But they muted him. But Rick’s moment was so much worse.

Here in the UK we've always had something called The Watershed. It's a legally mandated time period during which adult content can be broadcast on network and cable/satellite television. Currently 9pm till 6am. Also, no 18 rated stuff before 10pm, between 9 and 10pm you can show 15 rated stuff.

By 30 years you mean 1994-2024? You *might* have to include The Simpsons in that timeframe, but I guess that depends on whether or not you qualify it based off *when it came out* or when it was at its *cultural peak*. There's also Twin Peaks (but that depends on whether or not you strictly mean 94-24).

The moral at the end is a good one that writers really should pay more attention to. That's the problem with cursing becoming so common: It loses its meaning. When a usually stoic character loses his composure, this has a much greater impact than someone who's always acting on emotion doing so.
