It's understandable someone fell off their horse at a show, but people need to realize stallions are much more likely to injure other horses, rather than a loose gelding or mare. If you have a stallion you need to be extra cautious and careful when in competition AND WILLING to pay for other peoples damages if your horse injures theirs.

I'm impressed with how well the gelding handled everything! He not only stayed remarkably calm during the stallion's "visit", but then re-focused and went right back to work on the course!

BOLT THE HORSE It's a gelding. It's in the title. The stallion followed 'him' because he thought it was a mare but you can clearly see when he realises that the gelding was not and instead moved around to face the other horse.

BOLT THE HORSE Sorry but that doesnt mean jackshit to me right now as you are very clearly wrong. Furthermore, I can sit here and say/ type that I own 50 high-end gypsy vanners and you wouldn't know whether it was the truth because *gasp* this is the internet. As to actually counter your point, there is no sheath visible on the stallion either so, by your logic, he's a mare? Unless you can actually give me substantial evidence as to prove this gelding is a mare, that is not just 'oh the stallion is horny uwu' or 'if I can't see it it isn't there', I suggest you sit down and let people who actually understand horse behaviour talk.

BOLT THE HORSE Nice language there, glad to know what kind of a person I'm talking to. Listen, I'm not calling you a liar but I won't blindly believe you either- don't want to mention but with a name in all caps and language that limited, I'm bound to have my doubts (not judging just stating my opinion). Just because you can't see the sheath on the other horse doesn't mean it isn't there- I for one cannot see the sheath of either horse but am I going to go around preaching that they are lesbian mares, no! To me and alot of others, you look like a fool as you are blindly stating what you think is fact without actually doing your own research- I don't know what sort of an act your trying to pull but you are just being perceived as a brat who thinks they know everything about horses. I'm too tired to continue this conversation, and I suppose you have your 'horse' to attend to. I wish you luck with your animals- goodbye BOLT.

Also the horses face isn't in pain he's excited and wants to continue not stop...

Everything was handled as it should have been. Once the stallion figured out the horse was a gelding he did nothing other than stand. In all honesty his "rearing" was probably a sign of wanting to play. I've seen it many times. As he did not actually strike nor bite the gelding. I have a friend who owns and has owned many stallions, mares and geldings and every one of her stallions is very polite and acts more like a gelding than a stallion. My old trainers stallions are the same way. It all comes down to handling, training, temperament, etc. Not all stallions are "bad" as most people like to think. I'm not saying this to get a hundred comments back trying to start an argument or start a "I know everything" war. I'm just stating what I have experienced. Nothing more.

***** It also helped that the rider stopped their horse, a lot of stallions get more excited when chasing a target. If your stud is hesitant to jump a mare then asking her to move back and forth will often get him riled up enough to get it done. I use this method a lot with older stallions. This was well handled, I'd have liked to hear the warning of loose horse before he appeared in frame, but other than that this went perfectly.

Jeanette Vasko Horses only actually fight as a last resort. They’re prey animals so being injured is too big a risk. This appeared to be an under-socialized stallion who saw another horse and wanted to meet them. He likely thought the gelding was a mare at first, as evident by his nickering. Also, even real fights between stallions usually only end in a few bruises and scrapes. Serious injuries are extremely rare.

Lien Goethals you are a voice of reason. There should be no reason for having a noseband on and a bit in the mouth. I don't care what people are going to say about the bit. A lot of equestrian events are allowing Riders to go bitless and it is catching on... Slowly, it's catching on but it is catching on and that's better for the horse
@ladyj7517
@ladyj7517 8 жыл бұрын
The whole situation was handled very calmly and without fuss or drama. Being the owner of a dressage stallion, it is NOT always possible to keep them under control (try as we might). Mine has been with experienced stallion handlers since day 1 and he is well behaved but he has his moments but that's why I love him. It is for this reason that they are not pets and you always need to be vigilant - but issues can always arise with a stallion, however, you need to keep some perspective here.

I see a lot of why a stud horse, and why is a stud stallion loose questions. Not all stallions are stud horses. Many stallions are kept whole because there was no need to cut them when they were colts. I know plenty of whole stallions that get up on there high chair, as it were, because they have gotten loose even when in a field with no sight of others. This stallion had either ran off from being spooked, having had a small accident or incident where the rider was or the rider fell off. A stallion will go straight for the herd instinct to find others be it gelding or mare. If the horse was still on the track or being led off ect ect it would have kept inside the lines as it is possibly trained to do and seen the horse since they are only ever a rough 3-8 minutes behind the next horse. The stallion saw, he went, he introduced himself as stallions do and many others do to bond and create leadership and he stopped. Thank god he didn't go through any crowds and injure anyone as he panicked.
@shammydammy2610

To the people saying “they need to train their stallion, etc” the rider very obviously had fallen off. Any horse no matter the gender can take off this just happened to be a stallion and he wasn’t super aggressive and seemed very well behaved to me. Just came to say hi, both the rider and the other horse handled the situation very Well. Unless you train your horse to stand and not move a muscle if you fall off (which is very close to being impossible) then they will probably run off definitely in a xc field. Yes people need to make sure if they’re going to compete their stallion that they need to be well behaved but this one looked very pretty well trained to me. Didn’t act aggressive toward the other people, didn’t attack the other horse, etc.

how long does it take a stallion to tell the difference between a mare in heat, and a gelding doing his job? I understand the danger of a potential scuffle between the horses - the gelding already delivered a little kick to the grey. But is this horsing around, or was the stallion trying to get busy? At any rate the gelding was beautifully behaved!
@SaraNightfire1

Stallion was trying to mount the gelding, a lot of castrated animals don't have a scent to them. (My neutered male Siberian Husky was mounted by a non-neutered male Golden in the park and the dog wasn't playing nor establishing dominance. That much I can tell you. Also a foal followed a gelding around after leaving his mom thinking it was his mom due to the similar coloring. XDDD...) Stallions also usually don't care what sex the horse is as long as it's not another stallion. He didn't care what was going on, all he saw was a horse he could mount and tried to do so.

Monica Franklin it was more an act of dominance and show. Stallions present themselves often to other males, like they wanna say "Boy, look how georgeous and male I am. I'm stronger than you, so I'm the boss." In this point they can be compared with human boys. This horse's behavior is more playful, not aggressive, so I think the dropping down was only representive

OMG lol. I need to forward this video to LL those numbnuts who think that horses are all "studs & stress & stallions!" And when j correct them & tell them Nooo... Very Very RARELY are ANY horses you come across or see on TV or movies NOT mare or geldings. And they always ask WHY... well. Shucks. A 100lb DOG that's in neutered is a pain as it is. Who wants to deal with 10x that... As we see here?! Lol. Kudos to that rider too- he handled that so we'll!

That could have been a horrible disaster!! The gelding and his rider are fantastic!! Edit: after watching again, the stallion wasn't really bad for a loose horse, just an accident but I Love that gelding. 😃

Could we talk for a moment about how the rider seemed to LEVITATE back into the saddle? Did she get a boost from someone? Is there a trick? Is it just practice? Or has she genuinely discovered how to negate gravity?

I don't get why everyone is panicking. Sure it's a stallion, but it's not like it's going to kill the other horse? Yelling is not going to help! Calm down and take control of the situation.
@SombraWolf24
@SombraWolf24 8 жыл бұрын
+KaregoAt it may not kill the other horse but it can easily kill you. Some stallions become aggressive and a loose stallion focused on another horse is definitely scary. They will bite, strike and kick to assert their dominance. I have seen a loose stallion attack another horse and rider before, it was extremely scary, the attack sent the rider to the hospital.

+KaregoAt Have you seen stallion fights? They sometimes even bite the throat of the looser and can cause major injuries.
@KaregoAt
@KaregoAt 8 жыл бұрын
KittyFluff Love Yes, but the fights only get to that point when both horses are stallions of equal strength and neither yields. And this stallion is not fighting is he? No pinned ears, no biting, no actual kicking, just prancing, looking big and impressive. Also, for what I can see the brown horse is a mare, so he's interested in everything but fighting her. This is not an attacking stallion and if you knew anything about horse body language you would know that.

People who own stallions know they are ALWAYS unpredictable. I have had many, handled many bred many, and I never allow them to get away with a single god damned thing - They don't even get to look at me, or another horse or human wrong. However, if I was to fall somewhere, I am not sure what they would do if left loose without me - But to be fair, I'm not even sure what my mares or geldings would do. I have some that I am sure would stop, others, maybe not so much. It's the nature of horses, and it's the risk accepted by people who not only choose to own stallions, but also choose to compete in sports where they are present.

@OTTBs4me

emali111 Stallions are more aggressive and energetic than geldings and mares because of their hormone levels. It was irresponsible for the owner to buy a horse they obviously couldn't handle.
@emali111
@emali111 10 жыл бұрын
OldBurgerLover I'll say it again- falling off isn't a handling issue and isn't irresponsible. This is horse riding: people fall off it happens whether they're riding a mare gelding or stallion. I have ridden and handled stallions and they have all been much easier than my gelding. If the rider had been on the horse as it chased down another horse I would agree you but it was just a fall!
@OTTBs4me
@OTTBs4me 10 жыл бұрын
emali111 You don't know whether the rider fell off or was handling the horse on the ground at the time that it bolted. And yes you are handling a horse anytime you are physically controlling it whether in the saddle or on the ground. I never stated riders do not fall on mares or geldings, simply that stallions are more difficult to contain and handle, and this horse was simply too energetic for it's 'owner' otherwise he wouldn't have gotten loose. It takes an experienced person with years of hands on experience and knowledge to suit a stallion. Had that girl (quite idiotically) screaming after her horse when she Rushed up to him, been Beezie Madden, this incident would not have happened.
@emali111
@emali111 10 жыл бұрын
OldBurgerLover you can hear the commentator say there has been a fall and that the rider is ok. I'm going to put two and two together and assume that this was the horse she was riding unless it managed to get loose and get all the way from the lorry park past dozens of other horses to chase down this one special gelding at the exact same time as someone else fell off. Maybe this girl goes out every weekend and this horse gets loose in which case there is a problem. Or, more likely, she had a bad day, fell off, let go of the reins and the horse bolted as lots of horses do especially on cross country courses. Nothing to do with the horse's gender. And what the hell does Beezie Madden have to do with this. She has fallen off many times but it doesn't mean the horse is too much for her does it? just meant she made a mistake or had a bad day! And you don't even see the rider of the stallion so you have nothing to compare to.

honestly my old lease mare is a herd horse and LOVES other horses so whenever she dumped me (which was often) she would either run to the group of lesson horses or run to the fence where the paddock horses are. one of the girls at my barn rode her at a xc show and dumped her at the water and took off to the horse in front of them and this is basically how it also went, except the other horse dumped their rider and they took off together lol so i'd say this stallion and gelding handled it pretty dang well
