Mostly get more comfortable being more sideways. The really light oarboat lets you get away with pulling mostly upriver, but you can't fight the current with a heavier boat, so you'll have to be a little more sideways. At 0:35 you're pulling directly upriver, which won't do anything but slow you down.

I 10000% agree! I was so focused on missing the picket fence I totally neglected to prepare for after the beaver slide and those rocks at the bottom. I need a hard angle into the eddy behind the picket fence for next time - just pointing and pulling 'worked' here where I slowed my momentum enough to not crash and flip on that rock, but you're right, I won't be able to get away with that in a heavier boat like you said.
