Did you also know that Hamas - which is an Arabic acronym for “Islamic Resistance Movement” - would probably not exist today were it not for the Jewish state? That the Israelis helped turn a bunch of fringe Palestinian Islamists in the late 1970s into one of the world’s most notorious militant groups? That Hamas is blowback?
Former Israeli official Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s, told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat. Avner Cohen, a former Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than two decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009 that Hamas is “Israel’s creation.” Hamas was the result of this, as Mehdi Hasan explains. First, the Israelis helped build up a militant strain of Palestinian political Islam, in the form of Hamas and its Muslim Brotherhood precursors; then, the Israelis switched tack and tried to bomb, besiege, and blockade it out of existence.
Hosted by Mehdi Hasan ( / mehdirhasan , “How Israel Helped Create Hamas” is the fifth episode of a six-part Blowback series for The Intercept. Throughout this series, Mehdi Hasan examines key examples of blowback in greater detail and explores how foreign policy decisions by the U.S. and its allies often produce blowback and so-called unintended consequences.

So Netanyahu funded hamas, ignored Egypt intel days before attack and even moved most security to the west bank to conveniently make it easier for hamas to carry their attack. Hamas couldn't have done it without Netanyahu... Netanyahu wanted a license to massacre and he got it. Those "hostages" were never intended to be rescued, they are human sacrifices Netanyahu made.

Amen, Shakila. The US did a dandy job getting the USSR's butt kicked in Afghanistan, then turned its back on a devastated country desperately in need of recovery aid, sweeping it right under the Taliban's Afghan rug. Hey, but the weapons industry made a killing, right? Now we have a new and improved Taliban, living to fight yet another good gun getting morning coming soon.

"Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel's creation." That's a direct quote from Dr. Avner Cohen, a top Israeli military advisor who worked in Gaza for 20 years. There is no doubt that Hamas was formed from the blowback caused by tipping the levers of Palestinian governance towards religious extremism by supporting Ahmed Yassin.

It's literally impossible to fully understand the ethnocidal turn in the history of Israel and the rise of Hamas in Palestine without addressing the overall fundamentalist regression in the Middle East, which was fueled by the anti-communism sentiment that the US and Europe promoted during the Arab-Israeli wars in the region during the Cold War era. That is also why the whole _"hurr durr communism doesn't work"_ trope is extremely hilarious once you take a look at history and the sheer amount of money and resources dumped into subverting entire countries. These guys would have sold their own mothers before allowing the formation of an educated and movilized proletariat through labor movements; actively encouraging, funding and training some of the absolute worst human beings on Earth in order to bring down leftist movements worldwide. This is the same mentality by the way behind the mujahedeen in Afghanistan (Operation Cyclone) or the infamous Operation Condor that US deployed in South America during the 70s and 80s with unspeakable atrocities along the way, also the little less known COINTELPRO that FBI used within the US to target civil rights, feminists, anti-war, socialists and a wide range of progressive movements deemed as "subversive." What we see now in all these countries, but specially in the Middle East, is the direct result of said policies; creating monsters of their own and then leave them on unchecked. They evolved and rebelled against their teachers, which in turn gives an awesome justification for a perpetual war. By deliberately conflating palestinians as Hamas, (or Afghans as talibans or really any other terrorist group they helped to build since there's a long list) there won't be any reasoning or self-criticism against their actions; nothing will be too cruel or to extreme because the enemy is a made up concept of "pure evil," a vermin that should be erradicated at all costs. Amidst all this barbarism, thousands upon thousands will keep dying. More than a century ago, Jews from the General Jewish Labour Bund (also called bundists) had already figured this one out before it even started; the fundamentalist turn in the Arab-Israeli conflict must be countered by proletarian internationalism.

@@plocky4275 You raise many good points and provide historical context for them but I always take issue with this type of ideological take. It just delves too much into the "powers that be" conspiratorial claims. Assigning far too much power to some, neglects the self-interest and agency of others and ignores the geopolitical games that are simultaneous being played by other influential state actors. It no longer sounds like an interesting and considered perspective, it instead starts to just sound like the mad ramblings of some obscure dogmatic political loon.

@@GoogleIsNotYourFriend I'm a bit puzzled. How can anyone neglect people's self-agency when pointing out reactionary movements that have arisen precisely to subvert right of peoples to self-determination in the first place? Isn't the act in itself a tacit acknowledgment that such agency is very much alive and constantly being supressed? Or to even suggest that no one else was around for their own gains in the geopolitical sphere? How do you even arrive at such twisted results from the things I said?

We are expected to believe that you can’t side with somebody using militant terrorist tactics, at the same time, as nobody mentions the fact that because Palestine isn’t a state, it doesn’t have an army, Nor would Israel allow it to have an army, so they’re only means of actually fighting back against Their occupation, is with militant terrorist tactics. When they don’t fight, the Palestinians get strangled, when they do fight, they get strangled quicker. All the while, it’s Israel, who has been breaking international law since 1967, and flying in the face of every United nations resolution for the last couple of decades that agrees that Israel’s occupation of territories since 1967 is illegal. Not only do they want to take their land, they also expect them to take it quietly without fighting back at all. Which is the ultimate humiliation. Israel and the United States don’t want peace, because then they wouldn’t have a justification for endless war.

A lot of people blame Hamas as a sole reason there is a conflict in Israel. What is their alternative though? West Bank is being colonized and Palestinians forced out each day. Gaza has been locked for last 10 years. What does Israel offer to Palestinians that would make them change their tactics? All we do is repeating: Hamas is all terrorists. A lot of people think it gives them right to turn off electricity and water to 2 millions of people.

Apparently HAMAS has been the de facto governing body in the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it ousted the Palestinian Authority from power, primarily in Gaza; I am simply trying to connect the dots and make sense of things. So if HAMAS, created by Israel, is the de facto government of Gaza, then (I do not agree) the terror acts they conduct is in the same class as the terror acts conducted by the Israeli government, defending their territory and their people. Therefore by Israel's logic, Hamas attacks on civilians are justified by Israeli attacks and IDF soldiers on Palestinian territory harming Palestinians. It's obvious, the casualties on Israel side will be far less because of American weapons and American dollars shielding them from harm. It's the David and Goliath story played out in real time.

yes, Israel gave Hamas money because they were elected officials by the Palestinian people. Who else do they give it to? Are they not supposed to help Gaza at all? Seems like no matter what Israel does people will be mad at them. The Muslim Brotherhood has said they want to claim the world as theirs, they want to rule from Spain to Indonesia, and hate Jews. Israel was just trying to get someone new in power who didn't want this. But that is impossible in the Middle East. just a quick Google search of what the Muslim Brotherhood wanted, disproves the narrative that Yasser Arafat was going to be peaceful for very long. Plus hindsight is 20/20, Would have been very difficult to know that Hamas was the worse option of the two.

It is the israeli people who fought and continue to fight today that brought about Israel's creation. They fought to get the recognition of Israel's right to exist as a nation among the world's nations from the british empire and the UN and also fought off multiple wars against arab countries. I was watching a recent video where an American man, well versed and familiar with Israel, stated that Israel "is magnanimous because it allows 20,000 people from Gaza to work in Israel". He left out the fact that there's a million-plus Palestinians who CAN NOT leave - not even to see a doctor in Israel. I closed that youtube channel after he said how well Israelis - and Israel - are doing, which makes the Palestinians "envious". Palestinians can't leave to go to university. There's no internal businesses operating in Gaza or the West Bank because, once again, THEY CAN'T LEAVE.. There's so much more...😢

Israel is an apartheid state with an Illegal settlement expansion. Also, while Jews have historical ties to the region dating back 3,500 years, the Canaanites, who are the ancestors of the Palestinians, had already been established there long before the arrival of the Jews. Holding a party close to a region marked by significant and systemic oppression (i.e. Gaza which is an open-air prison), especially when such oppression is executed as "collective punishment" by one's own government, reflects deep insensitivity. As individuals, confronting injustice is not just an option, but a duty; that is the stance they should have adopted instead of dancing around. It is important to note that they were on land that is internationally recognized as Palestinian territory, which has been occupied illegally by Israel. Simply put, they should not have been on that land.

This is absolutely correct and deserves to be more widely understood outside of Israel. Yuval Diskin, former head of Israel's Shin Bet security service, told the daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in 2013 that "if we look at it over the years, one of the main people contributing to Hamas's strengthening has been Bibi Netanyahu, since his first term as prime minister." In August 2019, former prime minister Ehud Barak told Israeli Army Radio that Netanyahu's "strategy is to keep Hamas alive and kicking … even at the price of abandoning the citizens [of the south] … in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah." The logic underlying this strategy, Barak said, is that "it's easier with Hamas to explain to Israelis that there is no one to sit with and no one to talk to." The former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to the U.S. has said "I condemn Israel for funneling Qatari money to Hamas." He was referring to money that the Qatar royal family has been sending to Gaza for years, to the tune of about a billion U.S. dollars. Netanyahu's hawkish defence minister Avigdor Liberman was the first to report in 2020 that Bibi had dispatched Mossad chief Yossi Cohen and the IDF's officer in charge of Gaza, Herzi Halevi, to Doha to "beg" the Qataris to continue to send money to Hamas. "Both Egypt and Qatar are angry with Hamas and planned to cut ties with them. Suddenly Netanyahu appears as the defender of Hamas," the right-wing leader complained. A year later, Netanyahu was further embarrassed when photos of suitcases full of cash going to Hamas became public. Liberman finally resigned in protest over Netanyahu's Hamas policy which, he said, marked "the first time Israel is funding terrorism against itself."

@@haltom7259 Israel's actions are less justified today than ever, but Hassan's comments are also as relevant as ever. A "crossfire" needs a justification and Israel needs that justification just as American police need justification for their racist violent "responses". In fact, the Israeli military influence US policing. While I appreciate Raja Abdulhaq's comment, Mehdi Hassan's comment about Israel exploiting and cultivating military opposition still seems accurate. They desperately need to justify buying F-16's, drones, etc., and Abdulhaq openly admits Hamas abandoned Marxist principals long ago. The issue is that Israel needs and expects symmetrical military responses but since parity between Israel and Palestine is wildly asymmetric, the focus should be on asymmetric political responses, not symmetric military ones.

I feel sorry for Muslims....... ...... trapped by Arab colonisation and a culture of apostacy laws. A self imposed aparthied imposed onto them by Arab imperialist colonisers, i feel sorry for Muslims....... ....kidnapped by Arab colonisers and slavers to wholly submit to their authourity and fascist religious ideology and encouraged to put their lives on the line for the Arab Elite imperialists. Human Shields colonised, converted, duplicated to serve Arab supremacy. i feel sorry for muslims...... ....... who cannot question debate their belief without fear from other Muslims, i feel sorry for Muslims who go to Mosques and are blown up by a more devout muslim serving his Arab ideology. I feel sorry for Muslim girls who are forced to cover up from head to toe and mask them as some sort of attempt of modesty from the glare of Muslim eyes. I feel sorry for Muslims for they have been kidnapped from africa, asia, india, persia, eygpt, their identity wiped and then from birth schooled in Arab madrassa schools on how to submit. The biggest Slave Coloniser of human kind was Arab imperialist fascist colonisation of Africa, Middle East, Asia. Whole races, people, culture, destroyed and replaced with a slave duplicate Arab colonised identity. The largest slave trade of africans was carried out by Arab Islamic fascist, who could only escape death; was to submit to Arab authority, in name, dress, culture, festival, religion, law, ideology and reject their own ancestry be it egyptian , africa, persian, Indian now duplicated to serve one Arab ideology. Non Arab Converts colonised by Arab are classed as Mawali, slave clients of Arabs. What is religion if your cant leave? slavery. Muslims demand and RIGHTLY equal rights, democracy, religious freedom in the west and india, BUT THIS IS DENIED as policy in Arabised states as law. There is never a protest from muslim groups about this discimination and persecution of non muslims (not colonised by arabs). In fact western Muslims (colonised by Arabs) have the freedom of the west to live as equal and using this freedom they defend Arab Fascist religious arab states as they 'educated' to, yet they themselves would NEVER live in such tyrannical states. Hence the reason the majoirty of muslims refugees go to europe, another reason for that is Arab states do not adhere to UN resolution of Refugees, even if they are Muslim. A muslim duty is to protect the Arab imperialists at all costs, because the Arab diety and the stone in mecca are NEVER wrong, and if a Muslim (colonised by arabs) says otherwise they could be sentaced to death because of apostacy laws in place. The only jewish homeland is isreal, OVER 1500years before Arab Islam, there are over 30 Arab religous facsist states. Jews where systematically cleansed from the middle east and europe. Yet we dont trade with putin, for far less, we do with Arabised states that a death penalty for rejecting Arab authourity and Religous Imperialism. Do muslim accept they are products of arab colonisaton, then forbidden to leave under sharia law, with an Arab idenity imposed onto them submitting to Arab imperialism and supremcay. It was Arab states that aligned with Hitler to kill Jews. A history not taught in the Arab Madrassa schools, but then again if you have a supremacist beleif imposed into you by Arab imperialists you dont have much choice but to agree with that religious ideology. Maybe the Arab deity and the stone idol in mecca wont grant you a place Heaven. I feel sorry for Muslim who have to defend the massacre of non muslim men women children not just in isreal but around the world, as wholly justifiable, after being raised in a fascist arabs supremacist ideology where they MUST submit. Or look away when a Hamas rockets fails and killed 400 people then blame it on the non believers, kafirs, the people not Converted, Not colonised Not owned Not controlled by Arab supremacy.... At least in the west people know they where colonised and have freedom to express dissent in the Arab facist supremacist world, to accept this is a death penalty. What is religion if your cant leave? slavery. What is religion if your cant leave? slavery.

@Jason SteelflexA crossfire needs a justification and Israel needs that justification just as American police need justification for their racist violent "responses".

@@vader8867 Not necessarily- he's facing a lot of internal criticism for how he handled the attack, as well as for directing resources away from the gaza strip to support his annexation of the west bank (something which will inflame tensions in the long run... again). It's not quite like the US over there when it comes to wartime support of politicians, partially because of how often these sorts of things are.

I campaigned twice for Ron Paul. His son Rand is someone I’d chase up the street with my campaign sign and never trusted for a second, but the father was a class act. Thankful for him always speaking the truth and acting on behalf of the Peoples’ interest-and that’s more important to me in a leader than agreeing with him on every single issue.

A war crime is a violation of one of the laws of war (also known as international humanitarian law). These laws were introduced after the atrocities of World War Two. War crimes include the deliberate and unprovoked destruction of communities, devastation beyond military necessity and the ill-treatment, torture or murder of civilians living under occupation. War crimes are among the gravest crimes in international law. They are so serious that there is no time limit for prosecuting the perpetrators. Israel has a long history of war crimes, from the ethnic cleansing in 1948 to its present-day devastation beyond military necessity in Gaza. Since 1948 the United Nations have condemned Israel’s war crimes, but Israel continues to act with impunity.
