Here is a video describing how to repair a noisy blower motor in a 89 Toyota p-up. Now as I mentioned in the video this applies to most vehicles making this noise. They all work about the same. I would have provided information on how to test the blower resistor electrically but didn't think any one would wanna be bored with the details.

If you in fact decide you want to do this yourself...her are a few tips. It just took me four hours. Our posters makes it look like a cake walk. My truck is a 1992 Toyota 4x4 extended cab. The three bolts that are holding the fan are not Phillips Heads they are 8mm. The rear bolt/screw is the problem. You can't see it without a mirror, it's next to impossible to get you left hand in there. I have a ratchet that the handle twist, the only tool I could get on the bolt, no room to ratchet. Getting the fan out is tough, getting it back in is even worse. You actually have to squeeze the plastic blades to force it in. The resistor is easy ...two phillips head screws. NOW, the four speed fan switch, I'll take it to a Toyota Dealer. At least they'll be able to replace all the little plastic parts in the panels they break. Lou's Garage won't have them on hand. Hope this helps some of you...good luck.

1991 SR52WD: Actually rode without low speed since 1994 when I spilled coffee (or some time thereafter). Anyway, I pulled all air conditioning parts off the truck to clean and replace 0-rings 2 years ago but didn't check the blower motor resistor. Yesterday, while trying to get cool, it defaulted to only high speed. I think you just saved the day.

I had a problem with Blower Motor for my 1992 Toyota XCab going out, but also the fan speeds did not all work. I watched a few videos, and decided it MUST be the resistor. Ordered one and replaced it, (only after dropping the glove box, btw.) Fairly simple. Not all that simple to do if you don't drop the Blower motor, btw. Being upside down in the passenger floorboard not so easy. Not sure why you chose not to. Can't visualize much if you don't and certainly not for the viewer. This didn't fix the problem, so I changed the module. No Go. Finally did what I should have done first. I dropped the blower motor and discovered the connectors were both Toast. And yes, that pesky rear screw is tough to reach. I hate to admit I didn't put it back. :) Ordered new connectors, replaced them, and bought new Blower motor. Wires could barely reach to re-connect. (Toyota should not be so chinchy). Tested motor before re-install, and Nothing. Unplugged the new module and re-installed the original and Voila! Air! I do Not have a Lift. I was 67 years young, a Retired Female RN. I was really excited to get it done. Lasted about 6 months, then got seriously LOUD, then worked intermittently, then not at all. I currently have it in the shops to determine whether there is something shorting it out, and to replace it and hope this will solve the issue. I can do many things through Christ, but I CANNOT MAKE IT THROUGH A SOUTH TEXAS SUMMER w/o AC. BTW, my 32 year old truck has about 150K original miles on it. Gotta Love it! Now, just need a paint job.

Great guide! I wish I would have watched this video to the end before I started on my pickup. I spent about 40 minutes trying to figure out how to get the dang cage back in the housing before watching you do it in about 30 seconds. Everything is working as it should now :)

If I had it to do over again, I would remove the glovebox. This will give you more room and also access to the fan bracket bolts (not the three that hold the fan in), which, by removing, will give you some wiggle room to drop the fan out and replace.

Excellent video, i just replaced both my Cabin filter and engine filter on my 2006 rav 4 and came across this problem. To my surprise when i brought my rav 4 to original toyota dealership they weren't even nice enough to somewhat clean out the cabin filter before they put it back in .So i use them to diagnose and go elsewhere for service.

Great to see how easy it was to get out thanks. My two cents, on the Japanese import surf at least, they are torx bits which after spending 20mins trying to get the one next to the fire wall first, realised they are also 8mm socket heads which made it so much quicker and easier. Also agree with other comments, for the sake of a bolt and 5 screws, pulling the glove box assy out makes access much easier.

1991 Toyota PU-same problems. Allmonstersattack (below) is right. P.I.T.A (difficult). 1.5 hrs to R&R squirrel cage. I have woman hands small enough that medium Costco nitrile gloves fit snug. How a bigger hand would do this is puzzling. The painful part was removing the screw behind the fan motor and then dealing with a clearance problem in removing the fan/blower motor. The key? Each of the 3 identical factory screws fits an 8 mm socket, a slot screw, and a T20 star driver. Go after the this hidden screw first so there is no binding or wobbling, cause this is really a pain. The star drive and a tiny 1/4" drive ratchet with an adapter was what I finally managed to get into the screw head. My small socket extension was too long (need maybe a 1.5" ??). I accessed the screw from the right side of the blower motor and had 2 clicks of the ratchet in that tiny space. I wish I had done the following first: 1. remove the wire that crosses the blower and plugs into fire wall (pinch the fitting and pull)[I am guessing this is the speed controller]. 2. remove the wire that plugs into the fan blower (clip faces you, push the clip while prying the plug down). 3. pull the carpet out of the way, which requires removing the side pane,l and gently pull it off the velcro strip that is stapled to a rubber mat beneath the carpet. 4. reach a bit farther up/right on the rubber mat to find a yellow plastic wing screw; unscrew the mat from the fire wall and push it out of the way (this is NOT easy). 5. NOW remove the 3 screws. The unit drops straight down and immediately binds against the firewall no matter how hard you pull down. It was 90F when I did this work so the plastic blower deformed rather easy, which is required to get it out of/back in the housing (I "strangled" it out). Frightened by a smell of burning grass when I started the fan to check it. Cleared after a minute but real mystery what could have been burning. Good luck.

I have a 2008 Saturn Aura. My ac wasn't working on any speed. The control knob is manual. My car requires cutting the blower motor casing for it to come out and then buying a separate blower motor housing kit that GM requires for reinstallation of the new blower motor. So before going through all that trouble this is what I did yesterday. I unplug the blower motor connector. I ran 2 wires from the battery to the blower motor and I heard it turned on. Thank goodness I didn't remove it and didn't need to cut it to do this simple test!!! Ok then I grab my multimeter and I check for battery voltage on the blower motor connector not the actual motor. I got 12.6v. I also grab my test light and it test good on both the positive and negative terminals. Oh yea I forgot to mention that the first thing I did was to check all the fuses and they were good. Ok then I removed the blower motor resistor and I tested it with my ohmmeter and I check the resistance between terminals A B C and D. There was no open loop between them and according to the specifications I was getting the right ohms reading on each terminal. So the resistor was good. Ok so now I tested everything and I'm braking my head wondering why is still not working. I decided to look at the blower motor connector and one of the terminals was kind of dark and burned up. I plug it back in and I turn on the car and wiggle the connector. The ac kick in and it was blowing but when I let go of the connector it turned off. So there was the problem. It was a bad burn pin in the blower motor connector. I went to the junk yard and I got lucky that there was only 1 Saturn aura in stock and it still had the connector. So the guy cut it out and I got it for $15 dollars. I got home and cut the burned up one and strip the wires and use yellow butt connectors. I plug it back in and it work perfectly!! Hooray I saved so much money. Now I wonder why did the positive terminal of the blower connector burned up in the first place? Can that be an indication that the blower motor might be going bad and drawing to much amperage and causing the terminal to burn up? Oh by the way I'm the whole process I broke my glove box not knowing how to remove it. Now I need a new one and is freaking expensive!!

I thought I had a similar problem, but after watching your video I don't think I do. I have an 08 Impreza and about a month ago, my a/c settings 1-3 stopped blowing any air at all and only #4 would work. After running it on #4 to keep cool, a few days ago the #4 setting finally stopped blowing anything as well. I removed the blower resistor and found a broken solder on the #4 relay and tested the ohm's of each connection. Temporarily soldered #4 it to see if the blower motor would spin- it didn't. The control lights on my dashboard (the a/c, defrost, etc buttons) all light up. I'm lost! What should I try next? Could the whole blower motor be bad? Is there a wiring issue? A bad relay? I'd appreciate your help!

I have a weird sound in that area on my 2007 Hilux , would this be pretty much the same setup inside? It tends to vibrate or zing like a rotor or cable touching something specially at vibrations and low revs.

My blower stopped all together. If I ordered a new motor would it come with a new resistor or are they usually sold separately?

Hi, I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The a/c intermittently just stops working anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of days. Usually, I can slap the dash area and it'll come on. When it's going it runs perfectly with no strange sounds. Do you think that seems like a resistor or is that not enough info to diagnose it properly? Thanks

Do the 5th generation 4Runners (2015) have blower motor resistors? I checked the parts diagrams and cant find one to order. My blower fan has been erratic for years. Also, does someone have a procedure for testing the resistor with a multimeter? What resistances should it read?

I have a 1986 Toyota pickup with out a/c. But for some reason the resistors with a/c are cheaper. Will it still work in my truck with out a/c.

I have a 94 Toyota pickup. The fan speed selector is stuck all the way to the left on high, but it does not blow as hard as high setting. I can give the selector knob a little push and it will change the speed, but not by much. Just can't move it back the the right, even just a little. Any ideas? Thanks
