@@dethrowegamer1715 ooh, that's a tough one. "Hi Ren" quite literally started me on a journey which is changing my life. That said, it really depends upon my mood. "Losing It" if I want a banger. If I'm in a pastoral type mood, I love "Swan Song" which he did with the band he was in, The Big Push, though he didn't write that one. I really like the edge of "Crucify Your Culture". The storytelling of "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" is next level. The "Love Music" series is a lot of fun. As is "Loco". What's my favorite? What time is it? Because it probably changes from one minute to the next.

(I've been on Disability for 20 yrs for mental health issues) You would not believe how few reactors mention what you just did (which is no sin on their part; I'm just astounded that it doesn't SCREAM at people as they watch it because I can't conceive of it not screaming at them due to my own experiences) - the harsh inner critic he's dealing with is *relentless.* Ren is presumably doing everything he can to practice using the tools he's learned in therapy (identifying the critical inner voice & not letting those harsh criticisms go unaddressed) but the harsh inner critic will NOT shut up. It never allows him to have the last word. All his attempts to convince it to just let him be for a while are met with more judgement; it pursues him down every train of thought, mocking and berating him. It's the most chilling depiction I've ever seen of describing the inner experience that drives clinical depression (& other conditions that have this element involved, and therefore often are comorbid with depression). Everyone deals with an inner critic to some extent, and lots of people have parts of their life where the inner critic becomes louder than usual, but thankfully many can get the volume turned down on the voice again and recover from those times without too much disruption. It's why this song speaks to everyone - everyone can recognize the situation. But for some of us, we know how the inner critic expands to fill every corner of your life, taking up all the oxygen in the room. This song leaves me gasping every time. His depiction of the pursuit of even the smallest good thought, hunting it down to slit its throat, is so real. PS: with Ren, you never know. The next song you pick could well turn out to be him doing cartwheels while singing Lady Gaga! But you can be certain that if that's what he set his mind to do in the song & video that it'll be done in a way that blows your mind and brings you back for more.

I really appreciate this comment and you sharing that with me. Mental health issues is a tough thing to talk about because a lot of people that experience them are afraid to talk about them, and people that don't experience them (do not fault of their own) cant understand them. I suffer from and anxiety disorder that was so bad I could not leave the house. Its gotten better, but the fear of a random panic attack is always there. Its always been hard to talk about my struggles, but its amazing to find an artist that has struggles he's not afraid to share. It makes us not feel so alone in our own struggles. I'm very excited to react to more Ren.

@@dethrowegamer1715 I'm glad to hear you've seen some improvement with the anxiety. It's such a prison. Music is so important for mental health. Lyrics literally get me through the hardest situations I have to figure out how to tackle, sometimes, and I know I'm not the only one like that. I hope Ren and any other music you find through opening up your channel to music reactions, gives you another lifeline or two to help you find even more improvement with those panic attacks.

Although the beauty of art is that all interpretations are equally valid, Ren himself has said that this song is not about either mental illness, or chronic illness, it's about the human condition generally. While both mental and chronic illness are referenced, as he's telling it through the prism of his own life, lots of other things are referenced too. He said it relates to the human experience and that everyone should be able to relate to it, as it's something that we all experience.

I am always giddy when I get to introduce someone to the phenomenon that is Ren - and now for my fun fact: that was a single take. He was mic'd, the guitar was plugged in, and he did the entire performance in one go. He was kind of known for that - Playing and singing is cool, but this guy can play, sing, AND walk down stairs and through an alley (The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) - you should react to it whenever you feel like being amazed.) The briefest of history on Ren - he literally has been sick for half his life, this was filmed when he wasn't 100% sure he had many more years left. He received a life-saving stem-cell treatment, kept writing music, and his independently produced first album (Sick Boi) beat out Ric Astley for #1 when it debuted on the British charts last year. He's an artist and performer in all the senses of the word, he's a modern-day bard, and I am only slightly obsessed. *steps off soapbox* Thank you so much for reacting to this, your face at each progressive stage of the piece was everything I needed. If you're taking votes on which Taylor Swift song to react to next, Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me packs a punch :)

Renegade here. Welcome to Ren. He is a self-taught, multi instrumentalist who writes,sings, raps ,beatboxes, produces beats, and will not be confined to a genre. He is a true artist. He just turned 34, but list most of his 20s to misdiagnosed Lyme disease, which damaged his brain, body, and his immune system. He has been making music since he was 12 ans has a catalogue of over 200 songs and was in 2 bands, Trick the Fox, before he was ill and The Big Push from 2017-2022. I suggest you watch to Sick Boi. It deals with his frustrations with the medical industry and is much different sounding than Hi Ren. Being a metal guy, you will like ir, I think.

Extreme metal guy here. Ren is a bad ass for sure. I would recommend you listen to The Tale Of Jenny And Screech Full. It's a hell of a story that Ren performed. Also, for a metal request, not sure if you have heard of Extermination Dismemberment, but they have a song called Agony Incarnate that I highly recommend. Really good song to wake you up.

my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,, i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service, a 1st responder thru 40 years of hurricanes in fla ,and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side, after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining what i was. trying to do to get help, and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances of bringing my ideas to the world are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard.. and my chances of succeeding alone are close to those of getting out of quicksand alone..

Enjoyed your reaction, and subbed! My sister is recovering from surgery, so I sent her the link to a Ren song about dealing with pain--Humble. She's a therapist, and wrote back to say that she introduced Ren's music to one of her clients, who is suffering from Lyme disease. I have found his music to be therapeutic myself--and just plain entertaining, even if it hits hard.

Ren actually comes from Bangor, in North Wales, UK but he lives in Brighton, England. He was old that his problems were 'all in his head' and he was treated for 7 years for mental health issues, psychosis and depression before he was finally, and correctly, diagnosed with Lyme disease - by this the damage had been done. He is currently in Canada receiving treatment to try and repair as much of that damage as is possible. All his videos are live and one-take - though this one took 4 attempts. But it IS just one cut.

Ren was misdiagnosed for 8 years with bipolar and cfs He had been bitten by a tick and had Lyme disease untreated it has attacked and damaged both his body and brain He lost most of his twenties to pain and exhaustion that left him in bed 23 hours a day Medical people told him it was all in his head He suffered psychosis and had life threatening reaction to so many foods he only eats 5 or six ingredients now. Ren Gill plays live for most if his tracks. He was a busker for many years so is well used to live performances and he is also known for his one shot/take videos. Ren is Welsh lives in Brighton currently in Canada undergoing experimental stem cell treatment for the damage that undiagnosed Lyme Disease caused to the lining of his brain. He's a lovely lad, totally independent and brings all his friends with him and promotes their success too. Samuel Perry-Falvey is his usual videographer and has recently just won an award for his cinematic prowess in Money Game part 3 He is self taught from youtube videos whilst he was confined to his room due to autoimmunity and plays most instruments, he also raps, beatboxes, sings, acts, storyteller and produces all his own beats and tracks :)

Ren went years misdiagnosed with depression bi polar chronic fatigue syndrome he had a recording deal with Sony 2010 why working on his album he got Sick and couldn't finish it so they parted ways move back to Wales he would become bedridden for up 23 hours a day the meds they had him on caused him to have psychosis he got PTSD too but not from meds it would take years before he would get right diagnosis he has Lyme disease they told him it was all in his head that his mind was making him sick He has head 2 stem cell transplants done he went so long misdiagnosed he has Brain damage Organ damage Joint damage he in Canada right now getting treatment he has to have IV 5 days a week they put this things on his head that help open path ways in his brain he take hand full meds 2 times a day he can only eat 2 kinds of beef and few Vegetables because the autoimmune cause his body to have allergic reaction to just about everything he eats he also has ADHD too

Actually, if you want to get an idea of how wild last year was for him successwise, theres also a snippet of a twitch stream out there (4 min video) called "Ren reacts to reactors "Illest Of Our Time" during live Twitch stream" on lifesamovie s channel (he released Illest Of Our Time on his birthday in march last year), the 1 mil video was in August (5 min video) and his SickBoi album hitting #1 was in October (there's a 1:20 vid on Hexenkind1s channel and an 8:50 video on RenMakesStuff). But I guess before you go down that road, you want more music :D I agree with the others on The Tale Of Jenny & Screetch (full version! - if you wanna split it in 3 videos for more content, thats fine, but please watch it in one go for the experience! Trust me, you wont regret it), if you wanna hear a complete different style, I recommend Ren x Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines :)

Nobody ever mentions his Mast Cell Disease. It's the major cause of his severe autoimmunity and much else besides. Unlike Lyme, it can't be halted, only slowed. Although his undiagnosed Lyme caused a ton of damage, it's finally out of his system, thankfully. Not so with his Mast Cell Disease.

The only ones I'd suggest you not read in advance is Jenny's Tale, Screeches Tale and Violets Tale, which I'd suggest you watch the full version with all 3. As for the pig, Ren finally explained it's meaning, in his wonderful interview with Zach Sang. On one level it represents all that people have guessed at... The establishment, political elites, the medical establishment, capitalism, consumerism, greed etc, with references to Orwell's Animal Farm.. On another level it's meaning is much more personal. It represents his illnesses, his pain and his suffering. Although it represents everything he hates, it's also been the one constant in his adult life. It's like a love-hate relationship, with an old friend. He can't imagine life without him and can't fully remember what it was like to live without him there. He's become a companion and a comfort, in a weird sort of way. He said that it would be scary without him there but he'd still rather he was gone.

If you didn't keep talking over the top of it, you'd find it easier to catch the meaning. You also missed some beautiful lines and great transitions by doing so... Ren's music is a lot more substantial than the usual chart fodder. He's a genuine musical genius, an artist and a musical prodigy. Lyrically he's unmatched! There's a rawness and real profundity to most of his music. It's often dark but he matches it with beauty and a wicked sense of humour. He also writes and performs in every genre and never misses, no matter the style or genre! He's his own sound engineer and producer too and lays down all jis own music/beats/audio. He plays about a dozen instruments well. Half of them RIDICULOUSLY well! All self-taught! His performance skills are off the chart and his stage presence is palpable! He raps like a rap god, scats and beatboxes brilliantly! His vocals are incredible! You haven't heard anything yet, believe me! He's vocally capable of multiple voices, styles and tones. He directs most of his own videos and many, like Hi Ren, are recorded live, in a single take! As for his songwriting, what can we say? It's world-class! Especially his lyricism. He's a poet really and a bloody good poet at that! :) He's been through absolute hell with his health and although improved, he remains seriously ill, tired and in constant pain. I'll leave it for others to detail his pain and suffering but it's been akin to torture! He's fully independent! No label, no financial backing, no PR machine, no management. Every label under the Sun has tried to sign Ren. He's turned them all down! With Ren it really is all about the music! :) Despite his independent status, despite his serious ill health and despite have been unable to tour, or to properly promote his work, his last album went to number 1 in the UK! Knocking Drake off the top spot! In the process he became the first fully independent artist to achieve a number 1 UK album! It also went top 10 in several other countries, topped the worldwide Itunes chart and topped the US hip-hop album chart! He thoroughly deserves all the success he's getting! The fact that he's making music at all is incredible! What's more, he's a thoroughly decent human being. Full of intelligence, wisdom, compassion empathy and incredible talent but still with a sense of fun, optimism, humour and downright cheek at times. He doesn't take himself too seriously and his tongue is often firmly in cheek! :)
