I am just a DIY home owner with a little knowledge in electronics and a/c systems. I had that happen to me on my old Goodman, fuse blown, put another in and blew immediately. checked the coil on the contactor with my Fluke and it was shorted and had just replaced it a year before because of ants. Luckily I was working at Grainger at the time so it was a cheap fix. Love your videos!

You got lucky. Sometimes the wiring gets soaked and causes internal short. Sometimes it's a float switch shorted. Sometimes it's the reverse valve coil. Sometimes it's an internal short inside the thermostat. Sometimes it's the controller inside the ECM. Sometimes it's the defrost board. Sometimes it's the fan delay board. Sometimes it's the heat sequencers. I can keep going.

@@bobgallo3775 I went on a service call a couple of winters ago where the customer heatpump wasn't getting power. I went inside, smelled something burnt, took the breaker panel off and it had caught on fire inside due to it being absolutely packed with stink bugs. They were crispy stick bugs at that point. Some of the Romex connectors were missing in the top and the fire had blacked the 2x4s above the breaker box. He's extremely lucky the house didn't burn.

Really wish you worked where we live. We got a new ac last year and ever since we got it, it just doesn't work properly. I just turn it off inside cuz it is annoying. When it is super hot out my home really doesn't feel cool. When it is cooler out and I forget to turn it off it runs and runs and my home is too cold. I called and told the company and they just want to keep charging us for what we should of had from day one. At times when it runs my home feels like it wasn't drawing out humidity and the house felt musky. We told them but they just want to keep charging us. Love watching you work cuz it reminds me of growing up and being dad's helper. I am female and I grew up being dad's boy ... God bless the work you do.

I remember systems not working due to dogs chewing the low voltage wiring before it enters the outdoor unit; found this many times usually covered the area with chicken wire. In one extreme case owner had a German shepherd put that chewed the wiring and the insulated suction line. Told owner "sorry this isn't covered by extended warranty" Owner cheerfully paid the repair bill.- I suggested he enclose the entire unit so he won't have a repeat performance!

What do break yellow and break red mean? Is the fact you changed it mean it was done wrong? Thanks
@HVACGUY2 жыл бұрын
The water sensor opens a circuit when it senses water. Breaking yellow just turns off the condenser. I swapped it red so that it will kill power to thermostat and condenser - which will immediately cause a service call, and then a trip to the attic

I'm a backwards kind of guy. I would start at the contactor and if it has 24V and not pulled in it is bad. If not I would go to the tstat and if good then the air handler and if fan running check the relays there and sequencer there.

The amp meter will find the short without taking any wires apart.
@rupe532 жыл бұрын
@@Bryan-Hensley ... the problem is a draw over 10 amps or so through the meter will blow the internal fuse. (more expense) Running a jumper instead of a fuse and using an inductive meter may blow the board. Using a volt meter in series is a good idea.... but you have to guess where the draw is first so you can do the test. Usually I would disconnect everything then reconnect one at a time.

@@Bryan-Hensley ... in the automotive trade guys use an incandescent test light across the fuse holder. A short will light it full brightness. Find the issue and the bulb will only glow dim.
