I had the headlights go out on me one dark and rain night. The headlight switch has a thermal breaker that tripped due to using both the low beam and fog lights, and having the heater on. Even before that, the original switch overheated and burned up the plastic lever that actuated the switch. So replacing the switch with the same design will not fix the root problem, which is too much current going through it, AND the multi-function switch. I ended up installing relays to power the head lights and fog lights; one each for the low, high, and fogs. Bosch makes those 1 cubic inch, 30 amp, 12 VDC relays with standard pins for automotive use. The wiring harness going to the light pass under the battery tray, which is a great place to intercept the wires going to the lights. That is also a great place to install the relays, out of sight. Use the wires coming from the switches to trigger the relays, and run power source for the relays' switched sides directly from the battery. Then connect the wires going to the lights that were intercepted to the switched outputs of the relays. Or, you can install heavier gauge wires to go from the relays to the lights. This mod will make your lights much brighter, and let the switches live forever. If you can get LED replacements, they SHOULD draw less current, but I don't know of any that are road legal drop-ins. For the instrument panels, you can get LED replacements for the 194 bulbs, which will be much brighter and run cooler, as they draw less current. The stock dimmer may have much reduced range of control over brightness. Keep this in mind when using the dimmer: It is a rheostat; a coiled length of resistive wire that a wiper wipes at different lengths to provide a varying voltage to the lights. When you move the wiper closer to the source voltage, the lights get brighter because they're getting more voltage, which also means they're drawing more current. In the most extreme case, the wiper sits on the last coil just before the source, and that one resistive coil is bearing the full current drawn by the lights, so it is more prone to burn out. So when you're using the dimmer, either put the wiper to a "very" dim position, where the dimmer is drawing a lot less current, or put it right on to full bright, so the resistive coils are not being used. If the dimmer is getting flaky, you can pull it out and clean that resistive coil. I once chipped off a canker from one of my dimmers; it looked like it got hot enough to burn the oil and dust that the wiper had gathered onto it. Worked smoothly afterward, but I've never left it at the "almost full on" position.

I spent hundreds of dollars replacing sensors on my fox over a couple of years, and always chased weird issues and got used to how it ran. Then I thought about how my car was an automatic and was swapped to a manual, ECU and O2 harness as well. Then I found out about the jumper wire on the O2 harness connector, main harness side. Apparently, if you have an automatic fox (A9P ECU), and swap it to a manual AND swap to a A9L ECU, the pinout is different in the ECU and the harness jumper wire will feed battery voltage to the 5v supply to various engine sensors. I know, I kept replacing sensors without connecting the dots on my pre-owned, pre-modded fox. She's purring and happy now that I re-pinned that wire, but it's something every owner should know since it's possible their tranny was converted! And how wiring harnesses are slightly different through the years! Love the channel and the content, keep it going man!

If your clutch isn’t engaging or not disengaging look to the stock plastic quadrant, which is two pieces. Do yourself a favor and get an aluminum quadrant, adjustable clutch cable, and firewall adjuster. If your flywheel and clutch are good it will make a night and day difference. The quadrant is a pain to install but adjustment is easy. And great video brother!

Tip #2 the ignition coil. Went outside to crank up the ole fox one day and she didn’t start. Sat there like a mad man for 15 minutes trying to figure the car out. Low and behold it was the yellow wire on the coil. Came unplugged when I was organizing wires under there. Good stuff!👍🏻

Fox body I bought had been sitting for a while. Went to fill it up the day I bought it & it started pouring gas on the ground. Panicked thinking it was the fuel tank but it was just the rubber seal on the filler neck going into the tank. Replaced it & no problems since. Apparently it’s a common problem if the car’s been sitting. Just something to keep in mind if starts pouring gas one day while you’re at the pump. Don’t panic!!! Lol

Things I’ve learned so far from mine: (1) bad TPS will keep your car from starting as it will prevent the injectors from getting an electrical pulse; (2) those front turn signal lamps have sockets that will sometimes fuse to the bulb and keep it from working (or blow your fuse - ask me how I know lol); (3) WD-40 revived my door latches...if only I didn’t break a door handle in the process beforehand!; (4) some of those early 87-93 dimmer switches have a metal case...they’re easy to get to the contacts that make the dimmer portion work. A lot of times that contact is corroded...and you can clean it off somewhat easily!

@@89gt5.0 The inertia switch came out of the Pinto fiasco I think. (There have been some very good ones; however, in my opinion, this is one of the best as I desire to continue to keep my car near stock. The items mentioned here give DIYs an opportunity to keep these car running. I had the TFI issue last year. My car would start but would get me a mile or two into a drive and shut off. At first I thought it poor fuel quality. Nope. Then it would barely get to temperature prior to shutting off. Two replacements of TFIs, and other parts in attempting to remedy this issue, finally purchased a higher quality TFI and car has run fine ever since. Now, after watching this video, I have a few other items to look at during this time that a DIYer can review and possibly repair.

The best thing for the headlight switch is to relay the headlights, even with LEDs. Then the power draw comes straight off the battery. The only thing the switch is for then is a low current signal. Never had a headlight switch go bad after relaying the lights.
@larrylaverne95472 жыл бұрын
ALSO, the connector to the switch typically melts. Just replacing the switch is only half the job. If you don't also replace the connector within the dash, then one night, you'll be driving along and your headlight will simply go out.

In regards to the light switch, there is too much current running through there for the fog lamps. The choice mod for that is to introduce a relay circuit using the original harness to just trigger the relay and use close to no current. Also bonus of possibly brighter output from the improved feed and ability to trigger using the parking lamps so that you can run fogs independent of headlamps if you desire. It would even be a good idea to relay the headlamps as well.

Relay upgrade worked great. I did that to my low beams. They are now brighter than my high beams. I plan on doing the high beams also.

Seems mustangs up to 04 didnt have great grounds. I upgraded and added extra grounds to my 97gt. And yea..my headlight switch burnt up on my fox..it wasnt fun. It melted the connector so bad i had to replace it.

Little known fact, if the horn doesn’t work or you’ve got a brake light out the cruise control won’t work either 👍

Wipers only work when you push the wash button or when switched on high. No delay function. Replace multi function switch. Still no go

Good to see you running a Super Start battery. I know I did good. LOL. A few Sunday nights ago my wife's batttery died in her Pontiac, and I made it to O'Reilly's with 10 minutes to spare. Seems like a very good battery. At any rate that had nothing to do with your video. Ha. Good video btw.
