The only con of blu-ray is having to get off your couch to change the video. In all other metrics, physical media is way better.

If I'm just casually watching on my living room TV I will use Jellyfin and it's good enough. But if I'm in my home theater with my 150" 4k HDR and 7.4.4 Atmos setup, I want the best experience I can get so I pop in the disk.

The audio is the one that suffers most with streaming, especially bass. Listen to Lion King 1994 opening on D+ vs Blu-ray. The bass crash at the end sound way fuller. I was watching Jingle book 2016 on D+ 4K with my family and when the elephant part came up I couldn’t stand it any longer and put my Plex 1080p lossless Blu-ray on instead and it sounded so much better. The bitrate is just not there on streaming. Not now at least, and something has to give.

I'm also a big fan of physical media. I really noticed the difference when I played Lord of the Rings for my daughter. I used to have the physical discs, but lost them. When streaming, the picture looked pretty good, but the audio was awful. I run a 7.2 system in my dedicated (budget) home theater. Recently I fell into a free, yes free Kaleidescape legacy system that a family member got from a client. It will only do Blu Ray quality, but it is sweet. The interface is awesome. It's a K-Server, K-Vault and three portable players with remotes. SCORE!

The problem I am having with physical media as an older collector is the lack of a number of major old catalog titles on 4K. Ben Hur, Cleopatra, The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection and a number of major classic old movies are not available. Instead there is a lot of older horror movies and slasher trash that they put out quickly. A lot of us would buy the good stuff if they would just put them out.
@TheVid54
@TheVid54 4 ай бұрын
The titles you've mentioned already have superb blu-ray releases, and I eventually expect to see all of them on 4K in the near future. Warner Bros. is almost guaranteed to release BEN-HUR in 4k on or before it's 70th anniversary. The other titles are 20th Century Fox releases in 70mm, so 4K upgrades are likely now that Disney has optioned the Fox catalog to Sony for physical releases. Paramount and Columbia are already slowly but surely releasing their classics for 4k upgrades and rising sales will probably be making it sooner rather than later. Criterion seems to be re-releasing a lot of their classics in 4k lately as well.

Something else I feel worth mentioning(that you did not) is good ol bonus features that you get with Blurays and DVDs. Sometimes you'll also get multiple versions of a film as well. One example being my now very old(but still awesome) Dawn of the Dead('78) Ultimate Edition DVD set that has every version of the movie that exists(3 total, each on their own disc). And despite being old ass DVDs, still looks surprisingly good upscaled through my Bluray player. I guess I'm an old man now, but I still love physical media and will continue to buy Blurays as long as they're made available. To me it will be a very sad day when you can only stream movies and shows. Either way, we've come a long long way from the days of watching awful VHS tapes on CRT TVs, that's for sure. Hard to believe all us old fogies used to watch movies that way, but I guess when it's all you have it doesn't seem that bad..

A-Ha's "Hunting High and Low" had the orchestral parts changed in most of them, from Strings to Brass...totaly ruined it for me...

I’m always going to get the Blu-Ray/4K Blu-Ray if possible and if it’s a title that I don’t need to have the physical copy of but still want the film then I will buy it off Apple when on sale for $10 or less. I do however purchase a lot of tv shows off Apple as they are in HD and the physical is only DVD which I try to avoid unless it’s an old tv show. I’m also ripping my Blu-ray & DVDs of movies & tv shows to Plex. It’s been a great experience so far and I love having the ability to pick up where I left off on any tv in the house without having to carry discs around. I haven’t ripped 4K yet for space reasons.

I will keep my physical media if only for the fact that many titles are now being streamed in an edited form, not true to the original . Or come with a warning about the content that was never part of the original. And many titles from the past are not to be found on streaming as they have offended someone’s sense and sensibilities. Essentially a censoring of the art form. Oh, much like Hollywood studios currently losing billions, with a b, for flop after flop, streaming is on the same path. So……I will keep my nearly 3000 DVD’s which will last me a lifetime. I exercise every day, I don’t hardly see how getting up to put a DVD in is a chore 😂

Firstly, Chris, love the shirt 🤘 I think Plex is great from a happy medium, you get to have a physical media collection (assuming you’re using Plex to essentially back up/curate your own movie/TV show collection). I mean ultimately I think preservation is important and if you know what you’re doing You’re away with the fairies like, sound and as safe as houses. I mean in the end it just falls down to preference. I mean, I’m not the biggest fan of kaleidoscape, I mean as good as the hardware is the company is still at the mercy of whatever cuts/versions of certain movies Studios want to deliver to the service. Not to mention the fact that the service here in the UK isn’t that great because we don’t even have access to Disney/Fox titles. Probably the biggest studio that’s the biggest supporter I would say is probably WB

@@ChrisMajestic especially since they updated so you could add multiple cuts of the same movie, that’s what I like multiple cuts. Take the original Star Wars trilogy for example you’ve got the original released versions from 1981-1995, the 97 special editions, the 2004 special editions, the 2011 special editions and the 2019 (Disney+) 2020 (physical media release) special editions. I guess the only comparable movies you could go for with more than two cuts is probably Blade Runner. But I mean, if you wanted to go to cut the first four alien movies would be a great example

Let me make it simple for you streaming is between 5mbps and 12mbps, compared to a Blu-ray that is 80mbps and a 4K blu-ray I can go up to 160mbps. Streaming is nowhere near the quality is native and the only reason why people can’t tell is because they don’t have a good TV and haven’t been exposed to native 4K blueray. Also your Internet speed doesn’t matter as long as it’s over 15mbps because no streaming service gives more than that. Anybody can tell the difference if they are educated. (And let’s be real. The majority of people don’t wanna believe Blu-ray is better because they don’t want to invest into their hobby and prefer to be ripped off over and over and over well paying for nothing)
@ChrisMajestic
@ChrisMajestic 4 ай бұрын
I would recommend a download speed at of at least 50mbps for the best experience streaming movies. Not only do you have to account for overhead but you likely have dozens of other devices in your home sharing that same connection.
@michaeldietz2648
@michaeldietz2648 4 ай бұрын
@@ChrisMajestic it doesn’t work that way you could have the fastest Internet in the world and it would not change. All streaming platforms stream 5mbps and 15mbps with the exception of Sony Bravia stream service it’s a little higher. The reason why their streaming service is only sent between 5mbps and 12mbps is because 99% of TVs cannot uncompress anything higher, not at the technology Isn’t there to do it it’s just that’s the standard. (a computer or video game console can but your TV isn’t made that way)
@ChrisMajestic
@ChrisMajestic 4 ай бұрын
I’m not saying that the streaming provider will use 50mbps. The highest throughput I’ve ever seen Netflix request was 20mbps. I’m saying that I suggest a minimum home internet connection speed of at least 50mbps to account for random drops in speed due to provider network congestion as well as other devices in the house sharing that same connection.

You talk about where or not physical media is dying, and I'm sitting here, with my 3D format, which actually died a couple of years ago. And I'm not talking about whether or not people still enjoy 3D, I'm talking about how many disc's are being released. Even if the movies are having a 3D theater run, they only get 4k releases, if even that. I am even importing movies that were only released in Japan, since there is just no other way to obtain them. The last hope for 3D is a German Label called "Turbine Media" which already released 3 out of print 3D movies, including Jurassic World: Dominion, and they are supposedly releasing more in the future. And yes, I already know that 90% of the people don't like 3D, or even hate it. But there is nothing you can tell me that changes my personal opinion about good 3D movies, which i absolutely love watching.

It is insane how much they charge, for what is effectively cheap hardware. In terms of locally streaming bluray quality content, e.g., if you have the right bluray drive in your PC, and can rip one of the disks, you will see that they will play perfectly fine on just about any mid range and up WiFi router when connected to the USB port of the router. Simply put, a $150 router with an external drive connected to it, can handle a bluray quality stream, or even multiple bluray quality streams, since many will now offer decent IOPS and can fully saturate a gigabit connection (around 115MB/s), or in the case of routers with 2.5GbE ports, often 160-200MB/s. While it is not an issue for someone who is a billionaire, for someone wanting a basic network player that will work with a smart TV or other local streaming device, the core capability of such an expensive player (paying just to be saddled with DRM), can effectively be replaced with a cheap router, and 1-2 USB 3.0 external drives (many with DLNA or 3rd party indexers will index and combine content found on every drive connected to the router). Not encouraging anyone to break DRM but it is just to put the cost of a kaleidescape into perspective.

Physical media and even pirating has preservation compared to streaming and digital. For example, the Xbox 360 digital store is closing permanently on July 29th, 2024. The digital games rely on someone servers and the games can't be played that relys on using someone else server and it affects multiplayer gaming. I tried to play a multiplayer game but the server was shut down permanently on pc. I had to buy the same games all over again multiple times on my game consoles. There is no long term reliability and preservation and archiving with digital and streaming due to licensing fees, drm and force arbitration. For instance, it would be like the equivalent of renting a car with subscription services if the car dealerships went that route even the car is already fully paid off. The car dealerships decided to repossess the car because the consumer of the car stopped paying for the subscription service because cars can only be rental service only and no longer can be bought and locked behind a pay wall as a subscription service.

I hate streaming. I’ve had more technical issues, constantly having to log in to some services, no control over availability, lack of special features on a lot of content, … With Blu-ray, just stick it into the player and relax.

Streaming all day. Besides physical media owners not being able to tell the difference btw streaming and blu ray in a blind test with any regularity, with streaming I've got 10s of thousands of movies at my fingertips. Only one option and it’s streaming.

I would agree with this. Plus as I am getting older, there's just less and less new things I want to watch. I already own all my favorites and most times I find myself renting through Apple or using FAST services. There's no clutter to deal with and you can save a lot of money. If you're interested in buying things, Apple always has tons of sales going and tons of stuff is being redone in 4K.

4k is the way to go for best visual and audio quality. Streaming is like at 30% of what a 4k physical provides. You also should of mentioned that bluray 1080p physical copy looks better than a UHD "4K" stream.

It really depends on the Blu-ray quality and quality of the stream. I’ve seen it go both ways with physical 1080p vs web UHD.

Wait so is a 1080p blu ray gonna have greater fidelity than a 4K HDR stream?

From some streaming services yes. But not always.

@@ChrisMajestic thanks for the info! (Love ur videos btw) I actually got inspired by your projector videos to grab one for myself and start a budget home theater setup. The BenQ HT2060. I noticed you never reviewed it specifically, but I think it’s definitely one to try out! The picture quality is outstanding, and your reviews and comparisons are so great, I think a lot of folks in the budget category could benefit from one of your reviews :) anyway, thanks again!

Not once have i heard of kaleidoscape. At that price why wouldn’t you just build a htpc? At least you could do other things with it. Or maybe buy a mac mini and slap a hard drive on it. More functionality. Really odd, seems like something for someone that has more money than sense.

We've just turned into a massiv, lazy society who can get things in a click of a button. Today I physically went to the store and physically got a few 4k Blu Rays, and it felt good. Long live physical media.

I think Apple might have the best infrastructure when it comes to their rental service, but sadly it feels like they are trying to squeeze people away from renting and just using streaming services. I wish they could offer a “deluxe” streaming tier that allows you to stream *and download* higher quality, at least 20-30mbps versions of the films you have purchased. This is the first I’ve learnt about the Kaleidoscope but I’m unsure why it has to be a dedicated box, and if I bought one I’d be afraid that one day the service will no longer be available and it would have been a huge waste of money.

So you can honestly tell me without a doubt that you do notice a difference between Bluray and fx Netflix and how much difference is it then 10% 50% or 100%. Is Netflix (or other streaming services) quality at max so bad that you could in no possible way enjoy the movie or is this as pointless as a fps war in gaming world where people are so focused on higher fps that they never even enjoy playing the game
