Physical media will always be important for preservation. It passes down from store to store, from people to people, from generation to generation. For digital unless it's pirated and shared, it won't survive. Anything solely dependent on servers is dead on arrival. It immediately kills rights to ownership, it can't be resold, it's tied to an account or device and it will be killed by corporations when they inevitably shut down servers.

In a way this is a huge argument for piracy or at the very least being able to download a raw file of something and keep it somewhere safe in its highest quality format, there's old movies that never got re-releases that we the people could restore with AI upscaling and other methods

With Best Buy and Walmart ditching physical media, it's hello Amazon and other excellent CD/DVD/Blu-ray outlets. We are going to do a lot more business. This is so short sided on stores like BB. They sell high end OLED televisions yet are cutting out Ultra HD movie discs. This is like ordering ice cream without the cone. This makes no sense.

Nolan: Owning a movie is soo important... now give us 3-months subscription for a single blu-ray please 🤑
@Pheckphul1 Жыл бұрын
Nolan et al are forgetting an aspect of Blu-ray: BD+ protection. Discs using this protection require players with access to servers on the Internet to properly decrypt/de-obfuscate the disc content. Thus, while you may own the media, the disc publishers own the keys to playing the discs. Of course there are tools available to circumvent this, but legality varies by jurisdiction.

You can't fight the wheel of time. Physical Media will not disappear, but it will be niche just like vinyl. Some people will always want it cause the experience is different. It's just way more convenient to switch on your Smart TV and stream a movie than buying a blue-ray.
@ApolloT-vp5dn Жыл бұрын
Unless the movie you want is not provided ANYWHERE or has been censored, removed, deleted, changed (like Star Wars) etc. Convenience as you describe, is really control and a loss of ownership.

@@ApolloT-vp5dnYou can intellectualize it all you want. At the end of the day most people aren't going to spend 30$ to get a DVD of a film that lasts 3 hours at most
@stanfordite1 Жыл бұрын
Yes you can. And the wheel of time is about to be turned all the way back to the Great Depression and WWII in Hollywood when the media monopolies get broken up, the major studios get handed back to the descendants of those great studio chiefs like the great Louis B. Mayer of MGM and the old Studio System returns. Movie stars are going to be under contract to one studio again and MGM will return to its former with "more stars than there are in the heavens" like it once had Clark Gable, Mickey Rooney, Jimmy Stewart, Ava Gardner, Gene Kelly, Lana Turner, Hedy Lamarr, and the greatest of them all: Judy Garland. The great dream factory gave the world all those great musicals including The Wizard of Oz will rise again and it will be the greatest year in movie history; 1939 all over again.

Finding recent movie releases on blu ray, and when you do, getting them at sensible prices, is getting virtually impossible. For example, in the UK Amazon only has the US import version of The Menu. Tar on blu is £25 not a more normal £15

This is the begining of the end for physical media. The selection of 4k movies is so tiny, it will never reach the the numbers BluRay or DVD acheived. More importantly the streamers will hold all the power in the Control of what we watch.

problem with blu ray 4k uhd, is so delicate that sometimes a small disc defect can affect playback, when a dvd version can play it with no problems. Some 4ks when not handled properly, can attract dust and causing permanent marks on the disc surface making it unreadable
