Horseradish is closely related to the Japanese condiment Wasabi. It is hot (spicey) but gets considerably warmer when you chew it or grind it finer. It isnt hot like the modern chili peppers ie Ghost Pepper Habanero or Jalapeno just hot enough to know that you are into something not bland but not to the uncomfortable stage. It is good when mixed with something sweet as in cranberry . It is the tangy taste in shrimp dipping sauce. It is a good ingredient.

Fun Biochem Fact: The ingredient that makes horseradish and wasabi spicy is highly reactive to oxidization from the air and saliva. The fresh root us far less spicy because of this and it gets spicier with age after getting chopped and mashed.

Horseradish is usually substituted for the Japanese condiment Wasabi in the US. most US wasabi is made of horseradish and dyed green unless your at a real high end sushi bar. I've only really found sushi bars with real wasabi in NYC and LA and some do have it but you have to ask for the real wasabi because they will just put the fake stuff on the dish if you don't and they will charge you about $15-20 for a serving

Horseradish can make you cry but what it really does is clean your nose, it's like you're a dragon and the air you exhale is fire for a while. If you've had wasabi from sushi it's kinda like that.

I had horseradish for the first time a few years ago. It traumatized me. I refuse to use jarred mayo so i always buy squirt bottles. It was dark and late at night. I made burgers and grabbed what i THOUGHT was the mayo bottle. It was horseradish. The taste didnt hit me right away because i was also sick at the time so i finally realized after nearly finishing the burger. I threw up all night after that.
