I flew in San Diego while also in the Marine Corps working on Hornets. When I was all happy with my speed one day in my 172... Then 2 jets took off while I was in the little block of airspace west of Miramar and then... POOF, these guys were just straight gone like I was standing still. Asked a Pilot what he thought about Cessna VS Hornet. He said it's like riding a pedal bike VS a serious sports car.

They were on different frequencies at the time. The Cessna would not have heard any of the conversation until the blue angle checked in with tower and was given the landing clearance.

And to lower the arresting cable.
@mikemilner8080

When the controller asks if they can touch down prior to the approach end arresting cable, he's concerned if they can put the aircraft down precisely in a 1000' long box. The confidence of the response is a very modest understatement - F-18s land (trap) on a 300' long deck, aiming to hook one of 4 (3 on newest carrier) spaced 50' apart. Plus the carrier deck, unlike the runway, is constantly moving and can also be pitching and rolling as well.

And it could be foggy and at night too. Landing on land is child's play compared to a carrier deck.

In the PBS video Carrier, pilots have to land at night on choppy seas in a storm. Cdr. Fravor is the last to land and has no possibility of refueling. Of course, he makes a perfect landing.

He's clarifying that they will have to land before the landing runway legally starts - in the displaced threshold. Not sure why they wanted to do that vs 3/4 down the runway, and outside of an emergency you aren't supposed to touch down there anyway.

I wasn’t a Hornet guy (Hawkeyes) but this is mostly a procedural emergency. If the primary hydraulics fail to lower the gear, the backup methods can do it just fine, but the NATOPS (think: owner’s manual) says you have to take a trap with arresting gear, just in case the gear isn’t 100% down for some reason. If it collapses, you’d rather not be rolling out on the runway. Better to have your hook attached to a rope stopping you. In order to get the gear rigged, you have to declare an emergency. I had to do a couple of these in the Hawkeye and it’s not that big of a deal inside the plane. Controllers tend to freak because they hear “Emergency” but I get that.

@oubrioko
@oubrioko 10 ай бұрын
@@probe98 *Blue Angel 8* is the callsign for the Events Coordinator who _normally_ rides in the backseat of a FA-18F, partnered with Blue Angel #7, who serves as the team Narrator in front seat. They normally travel in the #7 jet as the advance team for the next show site. In this case, Blue Angel #7 (a naval aviator) is likely in the front seat flying the plane, while #8 (a naval flight officer) is in the backseat running the checklists, and operating the radio using her callsign. This incident occurred in November of 2021. The voice you hear is *Lt. Katlin Forster,* a fleet F/A-18F Weapons Systems Officer. Lt. Forster served as *Blue Angel #8* Events Coordinator for the 2021 and 2022 show seasons.

Similar situation way back in 2003 at the Patrick AFB "Century of Flight" Air Show. Blue Angel jet had to land with Barricade, I believe from a hyde issue. We were close enough to see the landing which looked pretty intense! Was interesting because the Blue Angels continued with the show while the solo jet with the issue just circled over the ocean.
