@mikemilner808010 ай бұрын
When the controller asks if they can touch down prior to the approach end arresting cable, he's concerned if they can put the aircraft down precisely in a 1000' long box. The confidence of the response is a very modest understatement - F-18s land (trap) on a 300' long deck, aiming to hook one of 4 (3 on newest carrier) spaced 50' apart. Plus the carrier deck, unlike the runway, is constantly moving and can also be pitching and rolling as well.
@belmarmom10 ай бұрын
And it could be foggy and at night too. Landing on land is child's play compared to a carrier deck.

@woodsidetj5 ай бұрын
I wasn’t a Hornet guy (Hawkeyes) but this is mostly a procedural emergency. If the primary hydraulics fail to lower the gear, the backup methods can do it just fine, but the NATOPS (think: owner’s manual) says you have to take a trap with arresting gear, just in case the gear isn’t 100% down for some reason. If it collapses, you’d rather not be rolling out on the runway. Better to have your hook attached to a rope stopping you. In order to get the gear rigged, you have to declare an emergency. I had to do a couple of these in the Hawkeye and it’s not that big of a deal inside the plane. Controllers tend to freak because they hear “Emergency” but I get that.
