What no JATO rockets for short takeoff??? I saw Fat Albert at "The Last Airshow" at Moffett Field in California in the mid 80's. Fat Albert lumbered down the runway and then the JATO rockets kicked in and it lifted off at a 45 degree angle into the sky. And the rockets were freaking loud. Most impressive.

Robert Harker Dude, they haven’t used JATO in over 10 years. Now the trick is to lift off and hold at 4 ft altitude all the way down the runway.

“Fat Albert” is awesome I go to see the oceana air show in Virginia ocationally and I believe it was 2016 it was on my birthday September 10 and the blue angels were there and I was sitting under a Cessna and a blue angel jet flew straight above me like 20 feet and it was loud “fat Albert” was there too it was so cool😁

A navy one just past here over Georgia at 22,000ft I believe heading to the Florida Panhandle probably because of the Hurricane. But at 22,000ft its hums very loud but sounds really darn good!!!! like a dash 8-300

Great flight but the best C-130 demo I ever saw was the Swedish Air Force. On take off, the C-130 would do a 120 degree roll. That was a sight to see.

Id like to take fat albert for a flyby over kitty hawk while the wright brothers were flying their aircraft. Can you imagine what they'd think seeing that? i just need to find a warp zone like that movie the final count down. btw, ive nvr realized till now how huge the vertical stabilizer is on those c-130 's. Its at least half the length of the wing.

Fat Albert used up the last of the JATO’s , the last ones were manufactured in the early 70,s for the Viet Nam war.

Impressive, but when I see these crazy performances on a C-130 (some times too crazy indeed) I cannot help but thinking of that firefighting C-130 that missed her wings in flight... After all, the C-130 was certainly NOT designed to be flown like this; not at least so often, I guess. Better NOT playing with fire, so to speak. Nice stuff, though.

+Mach1Airspace Versatile and reliable as the Hercules is, we must bear in mind (apart from the fact that, as I said before, she was not designed to be flown like that daily), that she´s not much of a "newborn", and that she has "a few years" to her wings and whole structure; and then that material has a limited lifespan too, so I´d be more careful, if I were them...

And keep in mind Fat Albert has been heavily modified to easily endure this kind of rough handling and actually much worse. This really isn't your dad's Piper and the Blue Angel Team knows the limitations of all their aircraft.

+Mach1Airspace Yes, the Blue Angels staff is supposed to know better than anyone else the conditions in which their machines are, as well as their limitations. But I think it´s time that they retired Fat Albert from service and replaced it with what we could call "Fat Albert II" (an updated C-130)
