In this early silent film Blue Beard is looking for a wife after failing for awhile he finally manages to get a man to give his daughters hand in marriage because blue Beard has a big fortune. When he decides to go away he warns his wife not to enter a room in their home but she doesn't listen and enters the room to find several ladies hanging. The devil taunts her and makes the key very large. A lady appears and the key shrinks. After leaving the room she has some ghastly dreams Blue Beard comes home and is angry she went in the room, then some towns people break into his courtyard and Bluebeard has a sword fight and gets stabbed. Then more ladies appear, a lady comes out of a well and everyone goes into Blue Beard's home and the swordsman retracts his sword. Blue Beard is still alive? This film was directed by Georges Méliès and released in 1901 in France under the name, "Barbe-bleue."

Movie back then felt like a set of stageplay playing out infront of the camera. I know how Choreography has come so far since then. But this is still got a charm that can be very easily recognize for the silent film back when. Thanks for the upload.

I can see that the actors there are saying something while shooting these silent films. You can see that they move their mouths, so they talk. I believe that it was easier for the actors to say sensible meaningful text than just to mimic with their mouths.

If the odd way the actors move bother you, slow the speed down. It becomes easier to watch.

Shame there's no audio. Anybody know why that is? And don't say because it's old because I've seen an older movie with a soundtrack. Crazy story, though, definitely the most violent and terrifying movie ever made at that point. The same person who wrote Bluebeard also wrote Cinderella, both adapted by the Cinemagician himself!

This is a silent movie, my friend. Normally when these were shown, musicians would be present, playing the music live to match the screen and sometimes they had their own score. Nowadays, soundtracks are often added to these movies but not always. Out of interest, what older movie have you seen with a soundtrack?
@FenceDaGreat

Antoinette Tussuad No, that was the wrong wording. I didn't mean I have seen a soundtrack attached to the film but rather one put in to the video to match the film. I'm a bit silent movie fan but I don't much like listening to them with 100% no sound.

Ooh~ I suspected so but I wasn't sure! (^^;) Hehe, I'm sorry! I agree, it would be nice to hear a score put to this one. When watching these, I usually have Musica Antiqua (Spotify) playing in the background when watching these but it doesn't often match. Oh well, someday!

Antoinette Tussuad Right. It takes the right score to match the mood and flow. Some films aren't silent but don't use a score like many of the works of Luis Bunuel, I guess making epic film scores was always a more "American thing".

FenceDaGreat That's true! They do a bloody good job, too, but when it comes to the epic-battle-final-scene stuff, I find it wears a bit thin very quickly~ A lot of it is just so generic but when they get it right, it's breathtaking!

Good I am happy that they are dead because if everybody lived forever 1. The world would be overcrowded 2. Everybody would be starving because there wouldn’t be enough food to feed everybody And 3. Everybody would be in poverty
