Hi Sandra. I'm working on Blue Bossa at the moment and have watched many lessons on KZbin. This lesson is great because you are teaching melodic lines through the whole song rather than just scales, arpeggios ect in an exercise form. Thanks. Tony.

What a wonderful insight into a great tune. There’s a LOT to think about in this one. Great lines, and explanations about what’s going on. And, rhythmically, I think the spaces between notes are critical. Your bebop elements are sweet! I remember the first time I played this, a keyboard player was calling the chords as he flew through it - and, I was just trying to hang on by grabbing a couple chord tones (to emphasize your comments on chord tones!)... my head was about to pop🤯! I went home and worked out a solo to be safe going forward, and now we play it in the trio, haha! I’m going to watch this again, because you provided a lot of context for how to approach thinking about it! Thanks Sandra - great job! Hope that finger is improving - you seemed to be favoring it🧐.

Excellent short piece - more of these 60-second 'improvs' please! They really help us newbies grasp the structure of jazz in a challenging, but do-able, manner. :) One request from me (not a complaint): Could the TABs also include chord fingering diagrams in the .pdf? I would find that helpful when, as you recommend, I'm trying 'visualise' the chord tones.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "chord fingerings", since this is a soloing lesson. Do you mean I should add chord boxes for the chords /chord melody songs? I do that on shorter tunes. Or do you mean to add the left hand fingering to the tabs. That would be pretty tedious to do, to be honest. That's what the video is here for actually 😊
@nigelallen99333 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I mean to have one page that shows the shapes (positions) of the chords played in the backing track. Chord boxes, I think they're called. It just helps us newbies. For example, there are many ways to play a CMaj7... but you probably only use one position/shape for your backing track. Knowing which one you use would help to extract the chord tones if we want to try and do our own improvisations.

Using F melodic minor over Fm7 is a good idea because that’s also D locrian 9 for the D half diminished chord that follows.

You can use melodic minor whenever you can use Dorian. It's just a hotter sound. And since F Dorian is compatible with D locrian, the same applies to melodic minor.

Thank you for sharing your musical knowledge with us. I must comment (with the most humility and respect) that the teaching methodology employed by many YT musicians is not a working formula. The problem being is that too much music theory is showered onto one who is trying to keep up with the lesson. I couldn't differentiate the Dorian or Major7th scale. Stopping the lesson to go look it up is quite discouraging, to say the least! There is no point in watching these lessons if one feels inept from the get-go, for not having the breadth of knowledge needed to absorb the lesson, much less practice the notes/chords. One begins liking the sound but hating the theory. I appreciate very much your kind and generous energy in helping us learn something of such musical value. Your wisdom and efforts are wasted on the likes of me because we don't have sufficient theoretical knowledge, and, if we did have the knowledge, we wouldn't be here. I apologize if my comments are offensive to anyone. I am only voicing my opinion -- no malice intended.

Hi Sandra, I have a possibly stupid question. On the triplet sequences, is there a "right" or "wrong" way to pick those? Every time I hit those measures my pick feels like it's scrambling to chase those quicker notes and it falls apart. You appear to glide through them effortlessly and I'm wondering if it's just a matter of practice or if it's important to start with a down or up pick when entering those phrases.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman3 жыл бұрын
Triplets ruin everything, lol. I have a video on laut phrasing, where I explain how to overcome this obstacle. Basically it doesn't matter, as long as you return to your regular pattern (downstrokes on beats and upstrokes on offbeats), as soon as possible after the triplet.
