Abijah is my favorite character in the whole thing. Also helps that Kenneth Branagh is a favorite actor of mine, the mans done a lot of Shakespeare and classic actor training so seeing him in this was a very pleasant surprise

That is the most subtle irish accent I have ever heard. Holy crap, I wouldn't have heard it if you hadn't mentioned coming from Ireland

It comes out more when I'm speaking to other Irish people. Or it's really obvious whenever I say certain words like 'Dublin.'

Just watched the show a second time and I absolutely have to agree. We so often get to see villains who are either total brutes, or fanatics or evil masterminds. The twisted thing about fowler however is how absolutely atrocious his actions are, but he is still so casual, calm and collected with it. He is incredibly charismatic, jet intimidating and confident, which is something that makes him a very entertaining villain. Not because he is hyper tragic or cartoonishly evil. The church scene made a point with this when he was playing with the spider in his hand. It is so the audience fully expects that he would crush it. By the fact that he doesn't we see that he is a different kind of villain. He does not have the mentality of a big angry kid crushing bugs because he juts can't control his feelings (like many other villains). He also doesn't crush it because he feels the need to show his superiority (like for example Frollo in the Hunchback of notre dame). Fowler sais himself he doesn't need souls. He just doesn't care if other people live or die. They get the treatment that serves his cause. They stand in the way, they die. They are useful, they live. He is even relatively polite to those who are useful to him. He is very socially aware how to treat people to make them do what he wants. He does not loose control at any point. And we hear him admit that this is his motivation. I'd compare him to a cat, but then the spider-theory's wouldn't work out lol. Anyway, I agree I would love to see him interact more with Mizu, because I feel that by interact with each other Mizu will get an important insight in the European colonizers mindset that she will need to maneuver her way trough London.

While I agree it would be interesting if Fowler turned out to be Mizu's dad, I unfortunately get the feeling the show is going a different direction with it. I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they pulled a twist where it turns out none of the four men was her father, or even that it was her mother who was white instead.

@@erin9322 I went looking for what you mean, but I couldn't find it. The only thing I can think of is the scene where she symbolically imagines herself fighting her white half?

Honestly, the most potent twist I can think of is her father turning out to be a decent person. It would force her to confront not only her whole quest but her whole life, force her to ask herself if her birth truly was the criminal act she's always believed it to be. That's not a theory, though, just one of several options.

@a.morphous66 Honestly, I can't find the clip right now, but I'm pretty sure the shot of Mizu killing the blonde with blue eyes was both the first of the four white devils (now dead and commemorated on Mizu's arm) and her mother.

I feel like there is some validity to the argument that sometimes pure evil villains can end up boring, zelda skyward sword has both girhahim and demise who are both pure evil villains yet one is remembered fondly while the other is only remembered for his impact on the lore, granted I feel like this was from an older era were people weren't really trying to create captivating villains as much since as long as they can fill the role of big evil obstacle in the way they were good enough(though there are still modern movies and games were the villain just kinda feels like an afterthought because the story needed an antagonist but they didn't have any good ideas for one) Basically a pure evil villain typically needs to either be entertaining in an over the top way or threatening for them to work

I have never had an issue with a villain being evil for the sake of it. Oh sure a sad backstory might make you pity them. Sympathize even. But ultimately, what they do from that backstory determines who they’ll become. There’s always a choice to not give into that darkness. But they choose it anyway. Often because it gives them power, charisma, ambition. Some are just born rotten. It happens. They can have everything and still turn out bitter, desiring more. In the end, the villain serves as an obstacle for the main character to overcome. A hurdle that forces them to change, to get stronger, to become wiser. There’s nothing wrong with that. Villains like Joker and Sidious are beyond any redeeming qualities but people still love them because they’re pure evil.

A man defined by a world that took everything from him in horrific fashion at such a young age. Not sure if anyone here has seen photos of people during a serious famine, but it's really hard to look at. He strikes me as a man that had he been in ANY other situation as a child he would've been better for it.

I wonder if Abijah might end up in a position slightly adjacent to Alpha Beta’s in Inside Job. More “psychotic villain trapped in a cage who provides the protagonist with occasional help while plotting evil” And less “becoming enamored with the show Friends and reforming into a good guy”

He was perfect in every ways you described, but his view of colonialism were 1) over the top and 2) didnt make sense for the time and place. He was ahistorical in his views. But otherwise he's a ten.

What part was ahistorical? Fowler’s childhood culture and world was brutally destroyed by the English. He saw you can throw in with the winners or you can die, and he has chosen to win. Many Irish people sold out their countrypeople with this philosophy and then were sent worldwide to brutalize others. What’s ahistorical or over the top?
