These recommendations are really great. I was missing a lot of alerts with the out of the box setup and these seem to fix it. One thing I would add. Under Alerts, Notifications, Push Notification. Change from Alert Image to 10-second GIF. This will give you a quick video in the notifications instead of having to open the app every time.

Like drinking from a firehose -- lots of information. Saved that for when I start setting it up. Kinda doing a restart on all this - 18 months ago was setting up security cams on blue Iris on an older i7 (1st gen) PC (converted to a Xeon). Then Covid came - and we were off doing other stuff and now just coming back to this project. Will get at least a 6th gen i7 though before continuing as I'll have at least 10-12 cameras to cover our acreage here. Thanks for the wonderful tips on this - I subscribed and will be checking out your other videos.

I used your older video to setup up my Blue Iris instance (which was great, thanks!), and I could never really figure out why you were using software motion detection. Any ONVIF compatible camera will have motion detection on camera chip and ONVIF will report it to Blue Iris. As long as you turn on "Camera's digital input or motion alarm" on the "Trigger" tab of the camera config, BI will be notified when camera detects motion and can trigger AI or MQTT events, or whatever else you want. Biggest advantage of doing that is that since motion is detected on the camera itself, BI doesn't need to decode the stream at all, and can write it to the disk directly (as long as you don't do overlays). Which means you can run it on any type of processor, even if it doesn't have hardware decoding. For example, I'm running 4 2k cameras with 2 substreams each on a very very old 2-nd generation I7. My CPU usage is at 2%, unless I'm actually watching a clip (constant recording on 480p substream and NodeRed triggered recording on 2k substream).

Love all your videos. I’ve watch a ton of them and am way more educated on security cameras and setting up my new blue iris system as I write this. Just wanted to mention here that the links to the 7040 optiplex go to the i5 version which only includes a 180W PSU and can’t run a GTX 1650 LP video card without also buying a $20-$40 240W PSU. If using the small form factor version, the GPU can only fit in the 4x PCIe slot. Also the sata power splitter link is wrong. Needs to be specificallly a 6 pin power to sata connectors. All that being said, if size isn’t a huge concern. The 7040 mini tower with the i7, 512 NVMe, 2 TB HDD + GTX 1650 ends up being a slightly better computer for the price. TL;DR update your links a bit so the new folks can avoid returns like myself. Keep up the great videos!

7:07 if you have large files, note that uploading to a NAS can impact the system and streaming if using the same NIC; for this reason a USB drive would be a good solution, or a more advanced option is to install a 2nd Network card and dedicate a subnet to one on your NAS (much easier to setup 2nd IPs on a NAS these days). Again, external large HDDs are the better route for most people - and they're relatively inexpensive (often less expensive than buying the same size/type HDD that is inside them)

Great video! I follow the original video a year ago but gave up on Deepstack because the i5-7400/AI-Tool setup can only process an image every 800-1000ms. When several cameras are active, the CPU jumps to 100% and the stock cooler transforms into a jet engine. Now that Blue Iris and Deepstack both updated their software, I've managed to get the GPU version running on my 1070. The processing time came down to 20-35ms and the GPU utilization is less than 1% even when processing several cameras per second.

I'm wondering if you could weigh in on the best option between unifi protect vs Blue Iris? I also have 2 Dahua cameras (waiting to install) and I'm leaning towards getting the Hikvision Gen2 IP Intercom for my front door.

Amazing tutorial. Much inspiration has been implemented both with Ubiquiti and now Blue Iris /AI! Thanks so much! What if I want to get my alerts on Telegram? Is there a simple setup? I see I can use AI Tool by VorlonCD, but I really want to keep the CPU and power consumption in the low end, so wondering if any know of a simple but effective solution. I'm still new to Blue Iris, but maybe a web request action in an alert could do the trick?

This is SO AWESOME. Tight integration of DeepStack in Blue Iris is amazing, and you did a great job explaining how to set it up. Since it took me so long to get my stuff together, I enjoyed your previous setup with AI Tool for about one week before setting this up... LOL!

In the record tab, you SAY select the Continuous + Triggered, but show Continous + Alerts on the video. Which do you mean for us to select?

waiting on this answer too. Every time I use Continuous + Triggered, it switches from 640p to 4k when I walk in front of my camera, but never switches back to 640p. However, when I use Continuous + Alerts, it never switches from 640p to 4k.

Anybody watching this should be aware moving clips from New to Stored on the same drive is just a wasteful use of IO bandwidth. Just skip Stored altogether, increase the size of New to max. If you move files use another drive for storage.

Thanks for your great videos! You are really lucky to have power at $.06/Kwh. My rates are more like $0.26 / Kwh, so if the dell runs at 75 watts actual usage, vs 20 watts for the Reolink RLN16-410 NVR (not including poe power draw) that is about $120 more per year for a Blue Iris system. Being that I don't know if I will feel the need for Blue Iris (vs Reolink), I could buy a Reolink NVR, and in a couple years it would pay for itself in power savings. I could then buy a Blue Iris system if I concluded I really want that without loosing money.

I would not go with a reolink DVR. The reason being is I purchased my reolink DVR less than 2 years ago and they are no longer supporting it and or providing updates to it. I cannot even use the AI detection they have on the newer systems. My advice is to stay away with reolink dvr's and build a separate system. This will allow you to pick and choose which cameras without being tied to reolink. Plus blue iris is always adding new features and functionality. So while the electric cost might be cheaper you will be paying in the long run when you have to keep updating your equipment because its no longer supported.

I have a son that has tonic clonic seizures every day (stiffening and shaking). We would like to put cameras around the home and on his bed when he sleeps. Ideally, we would like to be alerted from a camera system when he is having a seizure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Rob, absolutely love your videos, have been binging them for a while. In your setup here you mention a 2TB HDD, In previous videos you’ve said 2 x 4TB, happy with different setups etc but would you normally recommend multiple HDD in a RAID config or not as you delete most footage?

Do you know if recordings can now be configured to record the primary stream when using the "continuous + alerts" option? I did see you posted a work around reference guide: RLC-810A Friendly Alternate Configuration -- but before I dive in i'm wondering if this issue was fixed/changed. Mine appears to still be recording only substreams on alerts. Thanks!

@@christopher79 it’s never been easier. Which is an odd statement. “It’s much easier than it used to be!” That’s much better! 🤪 Honestly, it’s not terribly difficult. I also have triggers for porch lights based on detecting only dogs or people (depending on what I expect or don’t want to be there). The AI has helped to keep my house from being a disco show all night due to triggers by bugs and bats.

Hey man thanks for all the quality content! you're awesome. just a question though have you encountered a problem in reolink cameras where it is like showing in a wrong aspect ratio in blue iris? I'm not worried about power usage. I right now have 13 cams running 2 are 8mp, 1 is a reolink, and the other is a Lorex, 5 reo link running in 5mp, and the rest 2mp. All have sub stream set up. my system is a Intel Core I5 2500k with 10gb fiber card. 32 gigs of ram with cpu running about 32 % Unless I go watch a clip then cpu jumps up to 90 for a bit then back down to about 45 50% IF I have deep stack running I'm running 100% for almost 70% of the time. Witch is not good because it locks up and causes crashes. So I had to disable to Deep Stack for now. Until I can build a new system that can handle 32 cameras Deep Stack, and anything else I wish to though at it. This software is power full for what they offer for such a very very low price. I just wish they make a linux version to make it even more powerful like the stand a lone systems. Windows really sucks for this kind of thing. But it dose work. My FreeNas system is a super micro mother board with 48gigs of ram dual 8core 16 tread CPU's 60tb hard drive space. With 20 TB iscsi for Blue iris to dump clips over to the nas for longer storage. I can store up to 2 years of footage. I have been thinking of doing the same build but instead of HBA cards. have as many GPU's in stalled. If I wanted I could put 4 GPUs in my freenas server. I'm not worried about power consumption, as I want a power full system. .

Great video! It encouraged me to upgrade my old BI4 to a new BI5-installation with DS. It all works amazing except for one usecase: Toddlers running on our driveway. Seems like running adults are a bit tricky to catch as well but not as tricky as kids. I have a 4K Hikvision running in 10 fps. Do you think an increase to 25 fps could improve the toddler detection in DS? Or do you have any other idea on how to improve classification of fast moving objects?

Question: I have a house in Greece where I go for the summer. I am planning on getting two solar powered wifi cameras which will be connected to my year-around internet.
