I bought the perfect jeans. They were so great that I bought four pairs. It is always hard for me to buy jeans, because it isn't easy finding ones that fit me right; but these fit great and looked great. I washed them before wearing them (always do), and wore them for the first time on Monday. I wore a second pair on Tuesday, and noticed that the top of my pants and shoe strings were blue. That is not good.
I told my wife, and she told me that color of dark jeans can rub off onto light colored things; even my car seat! That got me to Googling for an answer for how to remove excess dye from blue jeans. I read mixed suggestions, and decided to go with what a woman said to do on a website. I said I would link to the article, but changed my mind when I found out it is worthless.
I worked WAY too hard to try to get the excess dye out, and it was a mix of various failures. I decided to use the bathtub so I could do all four pairs at once. Things seemed OK at first, because dye was coming out easily; but then I kept this up, changing the water over, and over, and over, and over. I lost count at the number of times I drained and filled, but I would say it was easily twenty; and the water was still really blue. At the end I just stopped, because it was getting late and it seemed like I could do this forever with the same results.
I followed online suggestions of letting the jeans soak in water with salt and vinegar overnight. I filled the washer and loaded it up with all of the stuff. I came back a little bit later to find all of the water had drained from the washer (I found out that is a feature of high efficiency washers). So I tried again, but this time put everything in the kitchen sink. Prior to this I had to scrub all of the blue from the tub, and it took a lot of elbow grease.
The end result...a complete waste of time. Don't try this at home, seriously; it does not work. I think I could rinse them a hundred more times and come out with the same results. Some sources said that dye could keep coming out for two years. I am not carrying a towel around with me everywhere I go, just in case I need to sit on lightly colored fabrics. I want pants that I can just wear and forget about. I am going to ask for a full refund. It is frustrating knowing I will have to shop around some more, but that will be time well spent compared to ruining stuff all around my house and other places.
In case you are curious, the jeans are Field And Stream Dark Wash Jeans. From what I read, it can happen with any darkly dyed indigo colored garment. One site said to store indigo dyed clothing separately from other garments (like in a pillow case) and to avoid light colored things of all kinds while wearing indigo dyed items. NO THANKS!
Just read this, and I think it fits my experience, and probably yours if you dare to buy dark indigo clothing: forum.purseblo...
