The most annoying thing about selvedge denim is the community. I came to denim through boots and it's amazing how much more stupid misinformation there is than with leather footwear. Like really you can't wash your jeans? Oh you're not supposed to get a single needle hem because it's not "authentic"? Chill dude they're pants.

The community can be quite annoying. I recall once being on a message board and asking about a certain brand's quality with their slim fit. I immediately got replies stating that slim fit was a fad and I should wear tapered or regular fit jeans. Well I wear slim fit (not skinny) because I'm a slender guy and regular fit jeans negatively emphasis my physique. Then I mentioned no wanting to fold up the bottom of my jeans and it was like I kicked a puppy down some stairs.

I mean at first you dont know what you dont know. After? Well about "authentic"... id say depends on your chances of ebaying them later down the lane! Never? Do whatever you want. Maybe? Than depends how much "non authenticity" would lower the price. I just got 2 selvedge pairs. Raw sanforised and one rinse. I dont even want to wear raw pair in a rain before first wash! 😂 and seing that max wear they would get is 10-15h a week and not in summer, i guess first wash is about a year, or 2 down the lane...

I lived in Okayama where the Japanese denim is made, and I had never heard of not washing your jeans, and neither had they, lol. Actually, a lot of Japanese denim used to be called “one wash.” They came already washed. I think a lot of this stuff came from the internet and the wish to be “unique/elite/cool…” Just get some cool jeans and wear them. Signed, old man.

To be fair jeans don't need to be washed very often, depending on how you use them two weeks to once a month is good enough a lot of the time, NEVER washing them though is just dumb and you probably stink to high heaven if you do this.

I think the main thing with the Japanese is that their domestic market for things like this is big enough to support them so they probably just don't care that much about their overseas sales. I'm into Japanese guitars and it's the same way. They make their living catering to the local market and that's good enough. It's up to us to figure it out for ourselves as foreigners. Personally that's kind of the fun part for me.

I bought some iron heart selvedge denim about a year ago. 25oz which were super thick and I thought they were never going to soften up and be a nightmare to break in. I wear them regularly and only soak them in the bath for about half an hour per wash, it's taken about 6 months for them to start to soften and fade, looking back I would have bought a lighter oz.

Iron Heart's signature 21oz denim is probably the wisest choice for people new to heavier denim who want to try that brand. It is much easier to deal with.

I'm wearing a 21oz denim, and by now they're comfortable and nigh indestructible! Just got a 25oz pair custom made and the denim is so stiff, they're hard to button. Ripped out the button-hole stitching in the first week trying to pull the button through the eye, and now it's fraying.

I am SO GLAD he broke the chainstitch myth! I have always had this complaint and finally, a guru is letting people know. I can't tell you how many times a chainstitch has broken on me and the whole line comes out like a cartoon sweater unraveling. I will sleep well tonight.

@@natesenft5376 i think it's entirely up to you. in whatever sense, it's why it's important to you. do you want the roping effect that mimics the old ways, done the old ways, and accurate to history of denim? go with chainstitch. if you want a more stronger stitch, practical, still get the roping effect but a bit different (double needle gets vertical roping, while chainstitch gets the diagonal hence the name roping)? go with double needle. the best answer can only come from you. some people prefer one over the other and it's totally fine. don't let what others say or think makes you who you are.

I recently found out there is a place nearby that sells naked and famous. I may go try out some of their jeans and see if I can find a style that fits me. It used to be easy to find jeans that fit well, but the style of everything being so slim and tapered since 2010ish isn't comfortable to me.

I grew up in the 70's. There were no such thing as a denim community and all that knowledge about denim. Also there weren't all the options when it came to denim, all these different cuts, washes, styles. We bought a pair that looked good to us (usually a 501 or an Edwin) fitted and just wore them without thinking about it. When they were dirty we washed them and that was it. They all faded beautifully over time. All that nonsense these days about how to wear it, what to put into the pockets for the best fades and when to wash them is comedy gold for me.

Me, too...just with levi's. I think this all stems from wanting to take care of something of high-quality that costs quite a bit of money. "Investment" pieces, I guess. If our Wranglers and Levi's wear out...no big deal...just buy another pair for $35-$50. These raw/selvedge jeans run, like, $150 easy. Hell, I'd want them to last, too. Ha. People just go overboard with it, though. Then that sht turns into snobbish obsession.

How does not washing for a year extend the life of jeans? I'd reckon all the dirt and grunge would make the fabric fall apart more readily. My jeans last for years (with a couple of exceptions [501 Tactical being one] and wash inside out and line dry, none of that clothes dryer crap.@@PoeInTheDitch

@@fredrubble5024 Yes, washing your jeans tightens the fabric and extends the life of the jeans. You don't have to wash them every time you wear them. If they get dirty, wash them, cold water, air dry. Otherwise, you only need to wash them after ten or twelve wears, if that.

It's such an important things to know about raw denim, they are going to get smaller if you wash them. Case in point, I was picking through some vintage denim in used clothing store, and I happened upon a pair late 60s Levis 505s, and I was excited because they were marked 36 inch waist, but they were actually by now more like a 32 inch. It was clear no amount of wearing would every widen them back to 36 inch, or 34 inch. Most of my new raw denim I buy, I buy at a 36 inch waist, and I shrink them down to my size, but I have never been able to get a pair of 32 inch raw denim jeans to stretch up to a 34 inch. Some other denim I have bought at 32 inch and they've loosened to 34 inch, but never tradition selvage raw denim.

Thanks Nick! The waists on the jeans I'd buy at the mall would stretch out 2 sometimes 3 inches and I would need a belt to hold them up. I'd wear them a couple days and would have to wash them so they'd shrink back to their original size. So happy to have found selvedge. Never going back.

Raw jeans are like different things to different people, some just simply treat them as clothing while others a piece of blank canvas and are more committed to a certain outcome. There is no need to bash, people do what they do because they see outcome they like.

I have a question: i’m a person who always had trouble finding her size; when it was time to start school, my father taught my mother to make my clothes, and she taught me to make my own growing up. I can buy things off the rack now, because there’s a much wider range of sizes available in my area now, whereas there was never anything smaller than a size 5 available when I was growing up. For a really comfortable fit, though, there’s nothing like a custom pair, or at the very least, a custom fitting. That includes jeans. Over the years, there’s been times when I’ve just gotten sick of what’s available, and made my own, with a fairly profitable little side business at university, as time permitted. One thing that’s true about denim, at least the stuff that I buy from the fabric shop, as well as many other fabrics, is that if I pre-shrink and treat with a mordant before constructing a garment, then the colour lasts a whole lot longer. Growing up, my siblings and I wore a lot of raw cotton; there was certainly no time for hand washing jeans in cold water. We were lucky that they always got line dried. My friends often wondered why my jeans didn’t fade like theirs did; it always astonished me how their jeans faded and looked worn out so quickly. I’m wondering if modern raw cotton denims shouldn’t be treated with a mordant when they’re first purchased, to limit the amount of colour fade. Would you mind speaking to whether treating new raw cotton jeans with a mordant Is even appropriate, whether there ought to be special considerations and techniques used, and anything else that you might think of to offer about the matter, please? tyvk.

I have to admit for me the idea of not washing your jeans after over a dozen wears just because you want the "perfect fades" in the denim crowd drives me nuts. Like after 2-3 weeks you can feel that jeans are getting nasty they start to develop a musty smell and eventually that develops into full on funk if you're obsessed with perfect fades as some kind of silly "hardwork costume" you can buy them pre faded just like people sell pre torn jeans.

I bought a bunch of Selvedge denim but favorite jeans are actually non-Selvedge work jeans: Ariat Rebar M7. They come with the fades, stretch and durable.

The one piece of clothing in this video that perplexes me is Nick's Henley shirt. I don't know what to make of Henleys. I understand their historical significance in terms of workwear, for mining and railroads for instance. Sometimes I like Henleys and at other times I do not. I'd rather wear a plain long sleeve t-shirt. Yes, you can unbutton a Henley when it's too warm but the detailing and buttons seem a bit fussy and superfluous compared to the simplicity of a long sleeve t-shirt. Unless you live and work in very hot climates how often would you want to take off or unbutton a t-shirt? The use case for Henleys seems limited and they seem to be purely a style choice today. I could be wrong and I'm open to criticism.

I always try to say, these garments are made well and aren’t made of tissue paper. They can handle a wash plus proper care and upkeep. A peeve might be that a super pro has to repair them. I have picked up a needle and thread plenty of times to repair small parts to keep them from getting bad.

One think for anyone who wants to really get into denim. Just hand wash them, it is a bit of work and usually takes me around half an hour but it really worth it and it gives u time to enjoy and inspect your denim better. Plus, if you really going to put 300-400 usd into denim, you might want to give it a bit special care. If sun dried is not possible use fan dried, takes longer and you need to rotate you denim but it is possible (did it when I was in Scotland).

One thing that bugs me a lot is that some brands only go to maybe a 34" inseam and that is my minimum length for preshrunk fabric. I only get a little cuff out of that. Raw denim is almost never preshrunk and so there are many brands I cannot buy.

Pocket size, that always make or break my purchasing decision. I remember when i used iphone4, i bought a pair of unbranded 201, and i REALLY struggle to move comfortably with my phone in the pocket. That made an extra habit of carrying my phone on my back pocket, but that kinda worries me from attracting pickpocket. Then i got myself another pair recently and safe to say they have improved it.

here's a tip that will save everyone some $$ + headaches and heartaches...sanforized denim WILL shrink in the wash. Your jeans will shrink about an inch in the waist. So if you buy a pair of sanforized jeans, and you plan on machine washing them, size up one size, don't buy your usual size. Yes, they will stretch, but the stretch isn't permanent. You'll lose the inch they stretched to + an inch off what they were before you wore them. It will also take a couple washes for them to shrink as much as they're going to, it doesn't all happen at the first wash. So wait until after the 3rd wash to hem them.

Also, I have a pair of jeans that fit excellent for about an hour. By the end of the day they’re a full size and a half too big. They dooo stretch a lot man! Honestly sizing is the most annoying thing. I am just getting into raw denim. I ordered my first 2 pairs earlier this week, N&F Weird Guy Left Hand Twill and Unbranded Ub201s. I ordered them from Amazon and even after looking at the provided sizing guides which I'm assuming came from N&F and Unbranded I'm still worried I might not have gotten the correct waist size. The N&F jeans get delivered tomorrow and the Unbranded jeans get delivered sometime next week. Wish me luck. I'll update this comment when I receive them hopefully helping other who are not sure about sizing. FYI I measured the waist of a good fitting pair of Levi's I own and it came out to 17.5 so I ordered a tag size 34 for both the N&F and Unbranded jeans.

Yup, ordered my N&F jeans in a probably a size too small and possiblyrhe wrong cut. Could button up but it was sooooo tight on the top block. Rather than send em back, I did soooo many squats in them and at a featherweight 9oz they have finally gave to make them comfortable enough for my summer weight jeans. I just can't overtrain my legs. Mainline fabric is banging.

Got a pair of N&F as my first selvedge denim and had a similar problem. Got them too small probably and while I can button the waist the top block is super tight - the rise is a bit short and the thighs are very snug. Maybe I need to do more squats in them!

Stop sizing down! I used to follow that garbage advice for a long wasting money on jeans that didn't fit. I realized if you wear a belt the jeans will never stretch past the belt size anyway so just measure your waist, get that size and go

My most annoying thing is, being on the larger side eg thighs, waist, arms, back, chest. It's way more difficult to get access to a lot of the products, you want. I am not talking obese, I am talking naturally big all over.

I get a spray bottle from the dollar store, put in a little soap, shake it up spray the jeans and rinse them off in the shower with cold water. Lay them flat to dry. Denim looks the same afterward. No shrink.

I wash my one and only selvedge jeans with my chambray and navy blue Oxford shirts in a tub. No problemo!

BIG TIP for extending your no wash time: Rub the inside of the jeans with a paper towel dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol then let them air out for a day or two. It will eliminate smells without removing indigo.

i took a pair of immogene + willie jeans to get hemmed at a local tailor in like 2010, knowing nothing about chain stitching vs single needle. obviously they hemmed it with a single needle stitch. i wore those jeans hard for years until i got too fat and had to size up. never had an issue with the hem.

true story: i once took a pair of jeans to a local tailor to have them taken in. they cut from the outseam and completely removed the selvedge stripe. i didn't even think to tell them to cut from the inseam, not the outseam... LIVE AND LEARN. i guess the question is: were they ruined without the stripe? or still perfectly good? it's really a question of vanity. we ALL want people to see the stripe and know how cool we are.

Hey guys. I'm a poor actor. And as such, I'm forced to hunt for my selvedge and other high end denim in thrift stores. Crazy, I know. But believe it or not, I've had a decent amount of luck here in Houston. My first pair was from (Greasy) Gustin. They were that first step down the rabbit hole. The pair I have worn the most is from G, by Guess. Chinese selvedge. I like them, the details aren't very high end, but they have formed to fit well. However, I have worn them for over 8 months, with two washes, and the damn things wont fade! Any clue as to why? And then on the flip side of that, I just picked up a pair of 7 Diamonds selvedge Kelso jeans, made in Thailand. These are very well made, with very clean finishing and nice details. These are already starting to show my cell phone imprint in the front pocket. Why would on e pair fade much faster than another? Is it a quality issue? Also, I did find a pair of Naked and Famous Weird Guy at the Hip HOp Vintage Fest here. the crotch was blown out and they were in a $10 pile. So I fixed the crotch myself after researching the Sashiko method. I love them! But they are too big in the waist. So, I might have to sell them, or get fat. Anyway, I love denim, and the heritage that goes along with it. Cheeers! and Thank You!

I have a pair that are over 20 years old with relatively minimal fading. It is probably to do with the dyeing and fixing methods used during manufacturing, along with the type of cotton, the density of the weave, the fit, etc.

Im not sure im buying the fit portion of this video. I literally just bought pair 100cotton and they fit completely different from first purchase. And im dealing with the dilemma rn currently as i type of.... Should i attempt to shrink a little in wash hot water only first.hang dry, and then potentially try even the dryer like 10 mins at a time later after that, etc? Parts of me maybe thinks i could have gone down a size and had it super tight so it expanded to little less of where its at now. Still not sure lol, but he made that answer seem littleeeeeeeeee tooo like not concerned for my liking when its deff a thing.

2 things I hate about selvedge. 1- is the price, sometimes I really think brands overcharge because they know they can. 2 - mobility/cuts. Most selvedge companies don't offer any stretch denim, or they offer very little cut styles.

Check out Oni denim. For cuts I go with 544, 622 and 122( elastane 2% or 1%). The first two cuts are really stretchy even though they have not elastane.

If you care about the rest of your clothes, don't wash them with your denim. Denim is way too heavy and rough to be agitating against lighter weight fabrics/items like tee-shirt jersey, rayon challis, bras, or underwear. If you don't have enough denim for a denim- only load, wash them with your (dark colored) towels. Always try to wash similar weight fabrics together to prevent lightweight fabric from getting damaged by heavier weight fabrics.

A lot of the time, Japan makes high quality products in Japan for the Japanese people, and they make a lower quality version in China or Indonesia for western markets. Makita for example, their power tools are better quality in Japan. They look identical but materials, the machining and parts are better quality. This might not be the case for every company but it's the case for a lot of them.
