Boosey & Hawkes Concert Band - Grade 4
Commissioned by the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan and premiered in 1971, this dynamic composition by John Barnes Chance has a unique history. The outer sections of the work feature a rhythmic intensity created in part by Chance's free use of eight-note groupings of 2 and 3. However, when first published, the meter was changed to 4/4 resulting in awkward notation of these figures. Through painstaking research by Carl Bjerregaard, Donald Flickinger, and Myron Welch (all connected with Blue Lake) this revised edition restores the asymmetric meters as the composer originally intended.
Recording by the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Festival Band, Dr. Myron Welch, Conductor, OMEA Professional Development Conference, February 2015

I remember playing this in Nebraska All-State Band in 1974, when it was very new. I was playing oboe. (Not the solo! I didn't yet have the tone I've developed, nor the fine instrument I bought the following year.) Counting's a bear in this! But so much fun when it comes together.

Doing a report on this piece, I chose it because I went to Blue Lake for band a few years back.

We played this in high school. Difficult in that timing and tempo among sections was a booger and every section was featured. I remember our director telling us we’d better work hard on this because there was nowhere for anyone to hide within this piece.

That part that starts on page 24 is like the hardest for the entire band to line up. Looking at the score, it makes more sense than every time we rehearsed it. But I wish my bd told me the sixteenth notes on the horn parts come in on different beats because I always thought I was wrong somehow

As a retired high brass man I encourage all who dig this master composer to look for Phil Parker,(no relation), and ReeberF.Clark. Two dear friends who are so good in a highly competitive world of 'classical' music. LONG LIVE WIND BAND!! jake

Is this a dumbed-down version? If not, why were some of Chance's notes eliminated? Where is the lower flute harmony at 2:30 (that is in the original)? Not just missing from the recording, but from this new "revised" score as well. Boosey does Chance a disservice with this inaccurate publication.

Fun fact: Markiplier went to the camp that commissioned this piece. Obviously not that year but I still think it’s a cool tid bit

I remember playing this in freshman year of high school!! It was funny only because the someone the first (only one) plus me and a third could play the third octave 'C'.

I remember playing this freshman year. It was actually terrifying to me because I was used to playing grade 1 or 2 peices and then I got slapped in the face with a grade 6

Huh.. My band director always said it was a Grade 6 piece. Maybe it was a different arrangement?
