One of those short and sweet videos right here! Ages back in 2008 I found this truck by chance during my initial visit to the Blue Mountains, only managing to get two very brief clips of it with my old digital camera, something I posted long ago. Unsure if I’d ever get anything further, three years later I was back in the Blue Mountains and was lucky to spot unit 953 again during my travels. The truck had just about finished its rounds for that Monday morning, but luckily a legend bloke was steering it that day and helped me capture the footage featured in this upload, so many thanks to him. I was very grateful to document it properly, which was especially lucky considering this truck was just about to be retired, with its replacement vehicle waiting at the depot. We have a pair of hopper shots with a pack cycle to complement both bin lifts, two exterior views show the lifter working at the final pick-up, then we have a little tour of the truck, before a short departure concludes.
The council operated two of these for public bins, one working in the upper mountains and the shown truck servicing the lower mountains region. Both were built in 1999, with Mitsubishi Fighter cab chassis’ and Garpac body and lifter gear, likely being some of or the very last side load machinery produced by the manufacturer. These were cool machines, with big grabbers instead of a comb lift and a slide sweep compactor system to clear the hopper, all fitting nicely into a compact rig. On the bigger side load models very visible hydraulic cylinders operated the sweep blade, but I’m not quite sure how it functioned with these mini versions, perhaps it was a rotary actuator or even a chain drive system? The council ran little Garwood side loaders on UD cab chassis’ afterwards and in recent years switched over to mini rear loaders, neither of which I have any videos to share - this Garpac was the best thing to show on this job anyway. Also must love the early “BM City Services” scheme/branding!
