Maturity in a song. To be happy for someone while grieving what cannot be for you as a couple: wisdom. Beautiful song.

Blue October was my dad’s favorite band. He passed away almost exactly 5 years ago. I never gave much thought to this kind of music. This morning I woke up with song lyrics stuck in my head so I googled them. The song didn’t exist. One of the first search results was the lyrics to this song. I read them and cried… I’ve been feeling down lately and I feel like this was a message from my dad, telling me to cheer up ❤️

Lexi Garrett so many people are Steve coming in a pit of anger and unforgiveness when a relationship goes bad. When someone is left behind, divorced, done wrong. Being happy, even when your former love moves on... even when it caused pain to lose that person... that’s a blessing.. and the song seems to be about being that healthy person.. not a bitter wrinkly unhappy soul.

This song is wonderful! There's just so many songs about resentment or anger when it comes to ex's (or old friends if you want to interpret it that way), this is so refreshing and positive! Just the fact that you want someone you once loved to have a positive and happy life and wish them the best even though they are no longer a part of your life. Amazing message, great song!

Exactly. Like.... As someone who's been in several abusive relationships, obviously what I'm about to say doesn't apply in cases of abuse.... But...i just don't understand why people feel they automatically have to hate their ex or ex friends solely because it didnt work out. SURPRISE!!!! NOT EVERYONE DOES WORK OUT! Everyone is looking for different things, everyone is hurting and healing from their own shit, and at different stages of it. And not everyone is meant to be forever. Some people are meant to be temporary and to teach us whatever lesson we need most from them. And then you both go your own ways. It doesnt mean you have to hate them. Try to remember how much they meant to you at one point... So i love this song.

This song.... speaks to a specific person I knew at one time or another. The lyrics "I remember how we tried and we tried I remember everything".... speaks to my bones. A specific relationship was like that. Really several. but one in particular who I still care a lot about. But it would never work in reality. Amazing how something so simple, can be so powerful. Each time I listen to it. It helps me move forward an accept the past. Sometimes a song can express something far better than words ever could.

The Flying Brompton that's cool, but what does it mean
@gregmatesich24797 жыл бұрын
Zac Bowland, I am thinking he is making reference to person’s brown eyes via Dr. Pepper which is a brown cola. Dr. Pepper is very popular in the mid-west U.S. but especially in the southern U.S. Justin probably grew up drinking Dr. Pepper in Texas which is most likely why he used this particular cola for a reference.
@theflyingbrompton47877 жыл бұрын
Zac Bowland see comment below. He hits the nail on the head. DP is a Tx brand cola...and also the oldest cola brand, even surpassing Coke.

Hi. Dislike number 7 here. I disliked this video not because I don't understand what music is. I disliked this because I don't like this video. Been a fan since I first heard Consent to Treatment back in 2000. I don't like the direction the music is going in. I feel it's too far a departure from the band I fell in love with 17 years ago. To like this video blindly would be dishonest to myself, and to the people who made this music.
@thezombie78397 жыл бұрын
Old school fan here, too. I didn't hit the dislike button, but I'm not super impressed with this. Where are the real instruments? It sounds like it could have been made by one person in ProTools. But, their sound has always evolved. I'm still looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
@jenniekelley33857 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you feel this way. I love that he's sober. I'm very thankful he's still around to make music and he could sing anything to me but I'm just not digging this song. I don't understand why just because we dislike a song you like we don't know what music is. People can have opinions different than you and still have it ok. I don't have to love every song to 'stick by his side'. I find this song very overwhelming. I hope the rest of the CD has us hearing a little more of the other band members, especially Ryan on violin. Either way I will stick around to hear it.

Even though I have cried everytime i hear this I'm goin to play it every so often to remind myself to be more compassionate to everyone. You were a powerful woman Dorothy. You never deserved that kind of abuse, no one does. You deserve happiness, love and someone who will treat you properly. You deserve a man who will be there for your children. This one sounds like an immature self centered dick who only thought about his own needs. I'm so happy to hear that you have grown in confidence and hopefully can find someone who will be there for you fully. Many blessings to you

This is so good. I know there are some Blue October fans from their early days who don't like the direction they've taken. People change and grow, and bands reflect that, and maybe the haters haven't moved in the same direction the band has and don't connect with their newer sounds like they did the early stuff. That's okay. For me, their early music was exactly what I needed at the time, and their newer, happier music is exactly what I need now. I've been walking a similar trajectory, I guess. More than that, though, I think the happier direction is exactly the music our cynical and angry culture needs right now, and I hope this song blows up in the public consciousness and helps people heal.

Without Blue October's music I doubt I'd still be breathing. That's the easiest way to describe what this band is for me. Nothing sort of life saving.

This needs to hit #1, because you all deserve the top. You all are amazing, and your all your music over the decade has been a coping strategy to my whole family. You're amazing in concerts and we'll always have your back as long time fans.

Are you going to see Justin Furstenfeld's Open Book tour in the fall? I've never seen Blue October live. I only recently go back into them, and have been hooked on this song, and How To Dance In Time, like they're some sort of audible drug. There are a few Open Book videos from last year, to give you an idea of the show. It's Justin, with an acoustic guitar, telling stories, and answering questions from the audience. I'm definitely going. Hopefully, I'll see Blue October sometime when they tour for this next album that he said they're working on towards the end of the year.

I love how many people are like "im so glad my parents listened to this kind of music while I was growing up, and introduced me to so many amazing songs" cos like..... I was actually the one who showed my mom. Into The Ocean was the first song either of us heard by Blue October. And she loved that one the most, while i gravitated more towards Hate Me as an addict who the lyrics resonated with on such a deep level. We've both been through extensive trauma, horrible depression and anxiety and other severe mental illnesses, and addiction in my case. So when I found Blue October, I was in like... I think middle school?? It was a long time ago (I'm 30 now), and I IMMEDIATELY showed my mom because I knew she would love it. (I was right) One thing I love about Blue October, more specifically Justin, the singer, is that he clearly really does struggle with the same things, and was never pretending to..... And every. single. time. I've started a new chapter in my life, i find that Blue October had JUST released a new album right before, where he details his journey through the chapter I'm just then opening. And I will never be able to word just how much I appreciate Blue October and the songs. I've felt relief at not being alone, I've bawled my eyes out when listening to Hate Me because I deeply felt what he was saying. How he wanted his mom to hate him and leave him behind because he knew it was the only way she'd stop putting him above herself, and finally live for her instead of always for him. Even though he knew for her to he happy, he couldn't be a part of her life. And as I've gotten older, that's very much something I can relate to.... And I've cried when listening to Fear, and how I could just feel all the pressure I've put on myself for years finally be somewhat lifted off me, and feeling like someone was telling me i could finally let go of all the fear and self hatred and pain, and yeah i was allowed to feel it but didnt need to internalize it, and blame myself and shoulder it all on my own in silence. I Hope You're Happy when leaving a relationship that was very toxic on both sides but still wishing the other person the best, and not letting myself hate them. And again as I've begun healing the child in me and [most of....] the song fitting for me to that hurt and scared child. Listened to Home next to my sleeping fiancé, the love of my life i found after that breakup. And him making me excited for the future for the first time, instead of terrified. So much of my life parallels Justin's, and I wish I could meet him and tell him just how much he and his music have helped me.... Through some of the absolute darkest points of my life.....
