Yes, an excellent drummer with a very unique style. Nobody sounded quite like him. Definitely check out the album Tyranny and Mutation, which has some of his best work. His fills and rolls are unlike anyone. Great stuff.

BUCK really rips it up during this tune...must pay attention to those lightning riffs in background while Allen lays down superb rhythm...as always. This double record was recorded w/ NO OVERDUBS... I remember an interview where Eric Bloom says they recorded it/mixed it and sent it in before the deadline of their record deal kicked in. Hard to believe, but that's how talented this lineup was/the original lineup w/ The Bouchard Bros. on Bass and drums.

Blue Oyster Cult was really a 60s band that didn't land a recording deal until the 70s. Like a lot of Rock drummers from that era, Albert Bouchard brought his Jazz chops to the table. Put that as a backdrop for a hard rock sound and you've got a pretty cool mix of unapologetic rock energy with a finesse rhythm section. Albert said in an interview that his inspiration for drums was Gene Krupa. Meanwhile, Buck Dharma, the guitarist grew up with a father who was a weekend sax player. Buck had also mentioned that he used jazz trumpet phrasings for his leads. You really hear it on this album. Over time, I'd say he ventured away from that, but if you hear him at live shows, it's deep in his muscle memory. The Subhuman has a lot of interesting chord changeups and blue sounds. They took a genre like hard rock, which was about being loud and aggressive and gave it a musicality not common in other bands.

Saw them in 1979(?) in San Francisco. They advertised themselves as "Soft White Underbelly", their original band name, for a one-night show at a small club called The Old Waldorf. Was awesome seeing them at their stadium-concert-playing peak in a club setting. A very rich catalog of music that most people are unaware of.

This song is about Imaginos who is shipwrecked and dying. The Invisible ones give him a choice. Die as a human or live as their servant. He chooses life and is resurrected from the dead by the Blue Oyster Cult. He is renamed Desdinova, eternal light. Founding BÖC drummer, Albert Bouchard, recorded his version of Subhuman title Blue Oyster Cult in 2020. Albert wrote and sang quite a few songs when he was in BÖC. On a side not. If you ever react to Dominance and Submission, from the same studio album as Subhuman, know that the studio version from 1974 is sung by Drummer Albert and the Live version in 1982 was sung by Eric Bloom, the same singer who sings the above song Subhuman. Early 1980's is about the time Albert was kicked out of the band. Here is Albert's version of 'Subhuman'. You don't have to react to his song, just enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6m2doZ4pK12b6M

I’ve always been a fan of their earlier records... those 1st three albums were their best. I worked on one of their shows in Phoenix AZ .. had to be late 70’s when I was being allowed to do IA permit work doing load ins and load outs.. once we did the load in we stayed for the show so we could tear down as soon as they finished and load the trucks. Got to run a spotlight for an Earth Wind and Fire Show and for one of David Bowie’s Show... during that time.

Killer point...generally speaking, the "swing" is really missing in modern rock. Like Keef has testified, "the rock's easy, the roll's another thing." Most of the really great British Invasion drummers brought a fundamental jazz background to their individual styles.

Lazy critics wrote off much of their earlier work as simply an American version of Black Sabbath but they were always much more than that especially the 'classic' line-up with the Bouchard brothers as the rhythm section.

The irony being fellow, Stony Brook alumni, Crawdaddy! rock critic, Richard Meltzer, wrote some of their earlier lyrics. Columbia had designs on BOC being America's answer to Sabbath...respectfully, they were far beyond "metal"; bringing the band's own individual styles & influences, including their collective West Coast '60's psychedelia fused one's, like the Doors & Steppenwolf, the Alice Cooper Band, Sandy Pearlman's cyrptic mythos, production & guiding light, Allen Lanier's girlfriend, the High Priestess of Punk, Patti Smith's, influence, etc.. Cthulu's tentacles are rampant... 🐙🔭👽

This song (The Subhuman) is actually called "Blue Oyster Cult" and its from the Imaginos story and album kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4SbnKGKf9yZpZY&ab_channel=Blue%C3%96ysterCult-Topic. It takes on a whole new creepy twist and I love it. The song "Astronomy" also gets special treatment on the Imaginos album. Many of BOCs songs from the first album to Fire of Unknown Origin are part of the Imaginos story.

This album and this song are like a guilty pleasure for me. I am amazed and gratified that this video exists. OK, I'll just blurt it out: Right or wrong, this video further augments my warm, positive feelings about Black people, even after watching many videos of Black people reacting positively to music made by white people. On to the actual music: This recording was made in 1974, and musicians were just learning how to use the primitive synthesizers of the day. One of the many things I like about this performance is how the band introduced the synthesizer by way of a fairly lengthy solo, then placed the synthesizer against a wall of rhythm guitar sound, finally leading to another spectacular guitar part.
