The classic line up. Val the headmistress, Pete the groovy guy from central casting, John the slightly deranged scout leader. I doubt they were anything like that off camera (Noakes was reputed to be short-tempered with young fans) but they fit the stereotypes of the era. Janet Ellis was the biggest heartthrob of them all.

We really loved Val , John and Pete . This show alternating with Magpie ( sorry to mention in the same breath ) made childhood very special. I remember my Gran returning excitedly from a holiday in Italy to tell us that she had seen Val filming by the Trevi Fountains. She was kindness itself- 'How lovely the sound of English voices' she said and chatted with my Gran and her friends between takes. These days she would have ended up in a selfie!

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the previous capsule as I was still in the pram and two days before my first birthday!

As of 2018 the programme is still running and yesterday (Tue 16th Oct 2018) the programme celebrated it's 60th birthday. Certainly enjoyed watching the programme when I was a young lad and watching the odd clip on KZbin is OK but I think im a little bit old for it now. Also as of 2018 the programme's namesake steam engine no 60532 Blue Peter (as can be seen at 8:15) is also undergoing a full overhaul for a return to steam, hopefully the TV programme will film an episode for the engines return to steam aswell as maybe even it's inaugural mainline railtour. Last we saw her on the mainline was in 2001 and she's been out of service since 2002.

You would have thought there would be somebody at the BBC who had the logic in 1971 to know that burying a time capsule outside for any length of time, it would need to be protected against nature. They had the technology, or was this another example of the famous BBC scrimping?

I expect they didn't really care. The idea was to make the programme for then and there and not worry about digging it up.

Well at least they let the real Blue Peter presenters of the real Blue Peter programme open the box that they buried. I was expecting the new new useless politically correct versions to be allowed to take over. It is unfortunate that they were there at all as there were three professionals there in Purves, Noakes and Singleton.
