I'd stopped watching blue peter a few year earlier. But watched this episode. I'm so gonna have to remember 2029. Never mind 2050. The memories it might bring back and I will be able to enjoy it with family

youtube wasnt around in 2000, in the year 2000 i was still going to the local library to access the internet it was a few years before we got it at home

Exactly! The idea that all the video would be archived, for access by anyone, anywhere - kinda makes the whole concept redundant :) But it’s so fun to see the presenters earnestly doing their best. I find their voices very loud and difficult to listen to, I must be getting old. Hope we’re all watching the unearthing video in 2029, to see whether they had managed to waterproof a time capsule on the third attempt

It's scary, I haven't watched blue peter since my early teenage years, I was 8 years old at the time watching this, so I am looking forward to seeing it opened.

I think they should have sealed all the stuff in those moulded blister packages, one usually finds cheap toys and stuff like Ethernet cables sealed-in. Which are impossible to open without a stout sharp knife or good strong scissors. These are certainly much stronger than zip-lock freezer bags.

People have to understand that the 1971 time capsule was a very special day in television history which I remember well. A second time capsule was buried in 1984 and opened too in 2000.

I don't remember the 1971 capsule - a mere infant still in nappies, but do recall the 1984 version, by which I was fourteen. In 2000 I hit the big 30!

Hmm, TV Centre is closing down for good at the end of the month, I wonder if they've given this barrel some consideration... Hopefully the old Blue Peter garden won't be built over so it's easy to get at it in 16 years time. Scary to think it's almost half way through it's imprisonment underground!

Today is April 23rd 2022. They will have trouble playing a VHS or Betamax tape now let alone in 2029 due to a lack of playback equipment. As for CD’s who still has a CD player?

It's puzzling that they used VHS and Betamax, because DVDs were around at the time. If I remember right, they were "flipper" two-sided disks and came in snap cases. Being the BBC, it's certain that they'll be able to get a video recorder to play them back on though, and to digitally record the contents. As for CDs, my computer's DVD player can play music CDs.

That plastic cylinder probably wasn't sealed adequately, and will have water in it when they open it. Like every other Blue Peter time capsule: ruined by the weather!! 😥😥🤬

Shame they didn't at least try and play the VHS tape, even if it probably was knackered (then again, the 1971 tape clearly still played!). Although there is an old TV next to the 1984 stuff- was that there for any particular reason?

I don't think it made too much difference by how they opened the packages, yeh they could have been more careful. But 29 and 16 years of been sat in mucky stagnant water will take it's toll on things. The 1971 box certainly looked a lot more substantial than that crappy chest thing they used for the 1984 capsule. Hopefully they completely hermetically sealed the 2000 plastic pipe capsule, so the two video recordings might survive this time. Or used a DVD, which would survive better.

Looking back on this now. The female presenters seem at bit condescending and passive aggressive with each other. Katy Hill more here, but seems like there must of been a bit of friction behind the scenes. Just my take from watching this.

Buried again? After the other two were trashed by water. Hope they used a proper seal this time and a bag of silica or two to prevent condomsation inside. It should've been hidden in a vent or wall cavity etc somewhere by just one or two people and a map made.

Sadly, since the BBC in its wisdom started CBBC channel, children's programming has become side-lined and irrelevant. When it was on a main Channel it was an opportunity for Kids and their parents to watch together. Blue Peter then was great for that purpose. Now, I doubt anyway could tell you the presenters or would even care. It is a sad shadow of its former self that struggles on miserably to be relevant to a generation of kids who have little to no interest in it. I think the time capsule may survive longer than the show.
