The blue ringed octopus is a small cephalopod with a deadly bite. They get their name from the conspicuous blue rings that appear on their bodies, though these are only displayed when the octopus feels threatened. Check out this episode of Animal Fact Files to learn more blue ringed octopus facts! There are currently four described blue ring octopus species, and they're found in shallow, temperate waters. Most blue ringed octopuses reach about the size of a golf ball at adult size, though they can eat prey that includes crustaceans and even fish! Their bite can be fatal to humans.
Name: blue ringed octopus (genus Hapalochlaena)
Range: along the coasts of Australia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Soloman Islands, the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka
Habitat: shallow waters, typically bottom dwellers
Size: up to 8in (20cm)
Diet: crustaceans and fish
Life Cycle: typically lives less than two years - adults die after mating

I've owned saltwater tanks for over 20 years, visit stores all the time, and only heard of these being sold once by a local petstore. The reality is their aren't that many people who own reef tanks, and a miniscule amount that are willing to keep an octopus. But, you know the narrative nowadays for most nature shows is the usual "mankind is destroying this animal, blah blah blah". The oceans are in bigger danger of losing their corals than they are an octopus.

@@genarosalazar2818 If "octopus" was a Latin word, then you'd be correct, but it's a word that originated from Greek (I think). Greek words are made plural by adding "s" or "es".

Blue-ringed octopuses (octopi?) are very interesting. They may be small but they're sooooooo deadly. If I see one in the wild, I'll just admire them from a distance.
