All of them did a great job as Saphir, honestly. Lyon might have had a few weird lines to work with, but that aside, I think his performance was pretty good. Greg wasn't bad either considering he was a newcomer at the time.

Another thing about the DIC dub. I liked their names better. Sapphire (Saphir) Diamond (Demande). The precious stone villain names were catchy while the originals are basically baby names hipsters come up with now to stand out in 2020

Lyon's voice worked for Saphir and he did a good job for the most part but at times sounded a bit sloppy,that might have been due to the poor direction. Greg's voice is great for Saphir too there is not much to say he wins he had the better material and direction that Lyon did not,but he was good choice from the Dic Dub.

Japanese-wise, I really miss Tsutomu Kashiwakura. A shame he doesn't get a lot of voice work. Enjoyed this and his Harry McDougall. With the English voices, it's a cruel choice. I think Greg got the better deal with direction, and yet I prefer Lyon's voice for Saphir.

I agree with Tsutomu being the best choice, he sounds like the voice of reason in the madhouse that hosts Ruberus (an abusive sociopath of a boyfriend), Esmeraude (a vain woman that's somewhat ditsy at times), Demende (a dissonant man obsessed with his lustful passions) and Wiseman (the nihilist lich monster who brainwashes a little girl into becoming a jaded woman who hates her parents); that with his passionate and idealistic tones, he'd be one of the good guys, which makes him a very tragic villain who's on the wrong side simply because he's related to villains and is obligated to follow his ancestor's wishes. Even with that, he's also very no-nonsense, responsible and professional, easily being the one that actually tries to keep to the goals, rather than be consumed in selfish passions. subasa sounds soft-spoken and youthful, but it hides a yandere for his brother side that puts his clan's mission in jeopardy for a petty jealousy and sounds like an overconfident villain with a soft-spoken and youthful tone of voice than a sibling worried that his brother is going down the wrong path.

Agreed. Your view on Saphir is interesting, seeing as Tsutomu also voiced Outlaw Star's Harry McDougall, who was also a tragic villain but one who was obsessed with Melfina and was also emotionally unstable, resulting in fits of intense anger.

The issue with DiC was the poor direction and directing of the show, otherwise the vast majority of voice actors were great. Considering the fact that DiC was just a group of sailor moon fans who hired voice actors, it turned out to be a vast hit.

they mainly criticize the old dub for the censorship bullshit. that aside, I might be biased but Lyon Smith is still the best English voice for this character....and it was one of his first roles, no less. Later on he'd be an absolute staple of Toronto's voice acting scene, popping up in everything from Get Ed to Spider Riders to Magi-Nation to Bakugan to Detentionaire to Grojband....hell, he was even in Resident Evil Zero....but his performance in that game was likely awkward on purpose.

I think this just might be Lyon Smith's best role besides Masquerade and Irwin...but in my mind he will always be Tony "Foney Bones" Jones. UPDATE: While still the best English voice of this character, I think Corey Riffin might be his best role due to the energy he puts in...not to mention Corey's also a good showcase of Lyon's musical talent.
