Very few bassists in popular music command the kind of respect commanded by the late Berry Oakley himself commanded in hardcore, straight-ahead jazz circles. Oakley had a brilliant imagination and could play anything. He was an ideal bridge between the front line of the band - Duane, Dickey, and Greg - and the drummers, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. The band found some stellar replacements after Oakley passed, but none could really fill his shoes. He was such a unique talent.

+Jesse Garduno - most I have seen say 2nd to only Jimi. I am 64, and I concur. Was lucky enough to head to Nashville in summer of 1970, had another gig. From July of '70 through mid 1971, saw them 4 times in Nashville, as the Brothers played there often, were born there. Would have loved to seen a live rendition of the Derek & the Dominoes album, with all the players, Radle, Gordon, and God. Eric will tell you in a minute he and Jimmy were good, but the kings were two American boys, Jimi, and Duane. And for anyone thinking I mean 2nd to Eric, I give you Experience, Ladyland and Axis. Listen to those 10 times, come back, we'll talk. What do you think that Jimi and Duane might have done together between 1971 and 2016? Sure wish I had been able to know. We all would have continually been blown away - gone too quickly, gone too soon. Gone, too bad.

Obviously one of the most creative (and yes, musical) guitarists we've ever been blessed to hear. Tomorrow marks the 49th anniversary of his untimely death at the age of only 24. But what really stands out for me is his phrasing. How he repeats a phrase once or twice, like an orator, then changes it slightly and moves on to the next phrase. There are so many of his phrases that I like, and to hear them 2 or 3x is such a joy. An Allman joy. God bless you, Sky Dog.
@GeorgiaBoy19613 жыл бұрын
@ Richard Bruce Music: The people closest to him say that Duane learned not only from listening to the great blues and other guitarists around him and who came before, but also the best horn players and blues harpists. Little Walter Jacobs in particular, informed his sense of phrasing when playing slide in an open tuning. At least that's what I hear when I listen to his amazing slide work. Not just his phrases, but his tone, too, which at times even sounded like a distorted blues harp - like Little Walter used to overdrive his harp using his mic and an amplifier or house PA.

Duane was incredibly nuanced inhis playing he could play a mini phrase with just two notes over 2/3/4 bars and never play them the same way where as dickey wasn't as fluid and worked hemiolas to death
@getoutofmybar8 жыл бұрын
+kevinshaferguitarsongs Very well said... I dig this tune both Duane and Dickey's work.
@ursafan408 жыл бұрын
+kevinshaferguitarsongs Some of that, SOME of that ..... has to do with the inherently different sounds of even 2 identical Les Paul's. Duane's did have a bit more warmth (round) , Dickey's a little more "Bite". Some say metallic but I don't like that description. 2 guitars made exactly the same , on the same day, with the same # of "winds" on the pickups will never be exactly the same. No matter how hard you try. Then again, stylistically , both guitarists would sound different playing the exact same phrase on the same guitar. And they'd both sound like themselves on a $100 knockoff. Bottom line, that version of the band had 2 of the best guitarists that ever strapped on an axe. And continued that tradition when they added Warren Haynes, and then Derek Trucks. How lucky can Greg Allman get !?!?!?!?
@kevinshaferguitarsongs44358 жыл бұрын
+ursafan40 Well said. I did read/hear that Duane used a "nearly dead" battery in his pedal because of what it did to the tone. Which makes sense. Max the output when input is very low does have an effect.

How on earth could anyone (other than a Redditor or similar troll) think that this is anyone other than Duane Allman? No one could riff like him. Just silliness.

That's Duane all right. I'd just caught on when I was 21 .... Autumn of 71' .... and then , just like that, he was gone. Caught them in 72' and they did 3 hours of great stuff. I can only imagine what it would have been like with Skydog there. The really great thing is that we have these vids to see ..... lucky. There are some good slide players about, but I always considered Duane to be in a class his own. Untouchable.

Began listening and collecting all their albums since I was ten years old. However I saw them in Mobile, AL at Ladd Memorial Stadium in 1974. Wet Willie and Quicksilver opened for them. All day outside concert went way into the night. I would have given my right arm to have been old enough to see them on stage with Duane (Sky Dog) Allman. It still hurts.
@SkeletonKeey10 жыл бұрын
It does still hurt. And then Berry Oakely one year to the day ... motorcycle ... not far from the same spot where Duane had his accident. That still hurts as well. Fortunately, we have some footage and recordings left. Duane was a great guitarist and there have been some great slide players since, but I always liked Sky Dog best. Still do.

I really hate talking about Duane's death because his accident was so brutal, being dragged under a truck for yards. Oakley's death could have been prevented after his head trauma from his accident. His friends should have insisted he go to the ER. He lived for a short time after, he had plenty of time to get medical attention. Again it still makes me sad. I still can't get over the fact Duane and Berry had the same accident and near the same place a year or little over a year.

I've been listening and watching for, effectively, 56 years now (I believe most kids turn on to music at approx. 8-10 ... Perhaps sooner these days) and there have been so many of these things. An artist many love goes way early. It really affects a lot of folks. All one can do is cherish what is left. Count them ... Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Stevie Ray .... it just goes on.
@lisalee314310 жыл бұрын
Kevin Anton It does effect a lot of people that grew up and listened to their music and saw them live. It's just so sad because it makes me think that we, their billions of fans could be hearing before passing way to soon. They would have became better and better. We could only imagine what kind of work they would have created from then up until now.

My all time favorite Allman Brothers Song . Thank you for posting it.Makes me so happy to hear Duane and Dicky harmonizing and dueling . Dig it !

Stunning - just the best electric guitar playing ever - this is up there with the best because it sings, not because it is technically difficult. This is what great musicians do - listen to, say, Rubinstein play Chopin - it is different 'cause he understood the message of the music. Duane had something - not sure what it was - and this piece captures it perfectly.

allgoo19 Duane doesn't need anyone else's talent to promote his own! Your Hindu beliefs are misconstruing truth. Duane is himself. Trucks is himself. Knowing the difference will help you understand what came first the chicken or the egg, the promo before the gig. Please grow up you, please grow up! You never heard Duane Allman saying he was channeling other artists! Man, grow up!!! Trucks can't get credit for Duane Allman's gift....you ding bats!! Apology accepted.

Duane and Dickey and Berry were fantastic together, nobody could cut them for what they accomplished. But Dickey was instrumental on the Fillmore album. On all the long jaunts, Dickies guitar leads the band into the unknown......especially whipping post. Dickies guitar slows the band down just before the drum solo, incredible playing. Dickey came up with the frere Jacque lick also......just incredible improvisational playing beautiful music. Duane let Dickey run free and thank God for that

I always could tell the difference between Duane and Dickey by listening to the notes.. if you hear the notes individually and there's a big on twang, it's Dickey.. if they bleed together and sort of swim around each other it's Duane.

You are absolutely right! I love how his playing is so smooth like that. Somehow his fingers were able to just sail over the frets, creating a sound like smooth honeyed whisky licking along your tongue, making you go, "Umm yes! Let's have some more!" over and over until finally the panties fly off!

Regardless of who is playing this solo, it is one of the all-time greats. I remember heading to "Matrices and Vectors" class at Florida State (not my favorite class), and hearing this song and getting really pumped up! This is such an incredibly melodic song ... just blows me away. And what guitar tone! Woof!

not only was he among the greatest innovaters of his generation; he was truly humble and not above performing anywhere for alN who appreciated his talent. I'm a friend of Berry Oakley their first bass player and knew Duane and Gre.g when the called themselves "The Allman Joys"

The phrasing and attacks of DA vs. DB are fairly obvious to the practiced ear. Duane is smoother, while Dickey articulates sharper attacks with the guitar pick and tends to play more staccato on certain repetitive licks. They complement each other perfectly. Is it that big a deal? Enjoy the beautiful improv.

Poly, well said, and to Mark, Duanes slide work kinda stands out, lol

Duane would pull a couple tubes out of his Twin Reverbs to run them at 50 watts instead of 100, like Dickey did. That gives his sound more breakup and warmth, while the higher wattage Dickey used provided a cleaner, sharper sound. Duane phrased his slide guitar like a harmonica player...
@ridgemontnlmoves50747 жыл бұрын
I totally disagree - and would say Dickey was more melodic (although Duane shows that side here) and Duane was straight up in your face and on the attack most times

The first solo in Blue Sky heard on Eat A Peach, and here as well, is, indeed, Duane Allman. Dickey plays the second solo in the song. One of Dickey's biggest influences was his grandfather's fiddle playing, which Dickey mimicked on guitar. This is clearly evident in the 2 solo (not played here, but on the full version found elsewhere on youtube). His trademark 'fiddle' licks can clearly be heard on Jessica as well as many other Betts' solos..
