The Blue Sky Tower is an ultra-modern 25 story, 105 meters (344 ft) tall steel and glass skyscraper that stands just to the south of Sükhbaatar Square in Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar. It houses a 200-room hotel, luxury apartments, restaurants as well as office and conference spaces. The skyscraper consists of a curtain wall made of blue tinted glass in reference to Mongolia's moniker as "the land of the eternal blue sky", but also as a signal to foreign corporations of Mongolia's transparency and openness to business. Blue Sky Tower serves as a landmark that dominates the central Ulaanbaatar skyline thanks to its location and distinctive shape. Designed in the style of a sail or fin, it appears to be modeled after the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Mongolians often refer to it derisively as "the meat cleaver" or "the sail boat" and the purpose of a sea themed edifice in the capital of a landlocked country is unclear.
Construction on the skyscraper, designed in cooperation with a South Korean company, began in 2007 but was temporarily suspended during the political tensions that followed Mongolia's legislative election in June 2008. Upon its completion in 2009, Blue Sky Tower was the tallest building in Ulaanbaatar but has since been overtaken by other buildings erected as part of the city's construction boom.
Ulaanbaatar, formerly anglicised and still called as Ulan Bator (Mongolian: literally "Red Hero"), is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is not part of any aimag (province), and its population as of 2014 was over 1.3 million, almost half of the country's population. The municipality is in north central Mongolia at an elevation of about 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the country's cultural, industrial and financial heart, the centre of Mongolia's road network and connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system.
The city was founded in 1639 as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, in 1778. Before then, it changed location 28 times, each new location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulaanbaatar grew into a major manufacturing center. Ulaanbaatar is a member of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21. The city's official website lists Moscow, Hohhot, Seoul, Sapporo and Denver as sister cities.
This video features footage of the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, part of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex. It is a 131-foot (40 m) tall statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, on the bank of the Tuul River at Tsonjin Boldog (54 km (33.55 mi) east of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar), where according to legend, he found a golden whip. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. It is on top of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor centre, itself 10 metres (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. It was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and erected in 2008. Visitors walk to the head of the horse through its chest and neck, where they have a panoramic view. The main statue area will be surrounded by 200 ger (yurts), designed and arranged like the pattern of the horse brand marks that were used by the 13th century Mongol tribes. The cost of the complex is reported to be US$4.1 million, spent by The Genco Tour Bureau, a Mongolian company. The attached museum has exhibitions relating to the Bronze Age and Xiongnu archaeological cultures in Mongolia, which show everyday utensils, belt buckles, knives, sacred animals, etc. and a second exhibition on the Great Khan period in the 13 and 14th centuries which has ancient tools, goldsmith subjects and some Nestorian crosses and rosaries. Adjacent to the museum is a tourist and recreation centre, which covers 212 hectares (520 acres).
