Welcome back! This is Part Two of our Spooled Glass Bowl process video series. Thanks for watching, feel free to ask questions or leave comments, share with others, and please remember to subscribe!
In our collaborative handblown blown glass bowl series, we (Michael Schunke and Josie Gluck, designers and co-founders of Vetro Vero) layer innovative glass cane and murrini patterns to examine relationships between order and disorder. We frame the patterns within a sheath of contrasting color to expose the space where chaos reveals beauty. The handblown art objects touch on themes of beauty, chaos, and the spectacular mundane.
This video features the second phase in our intensive process to craft a large-scale shallow bowl. In this segment, we fuse the intricately patterned blown glass component (from our last video: • Blue + White Spooled G... ) onto a large blowpipe, positioning it to become an interior core. We gather more hot glass over the core, and encase the pattern in a blue exterior by blowing into a color cup. The combination of the pattern and the color cup becomes a massive core of accumulated molten glass, which will eventually be formed into a substantial showpiece.
Glassblowers will notice that we are constantly cleaning and inspecting the glass. Also note the shape and temperature of the pattern going into the cup, sealing the color over the glass without trapping bubbles, and the scale and temperature of the bubble prepared for a final gather.
Don't miss the rest of this process! Subscribe to be notified when the next video is released:
We will demonstrate the final gather from our furnace, and show how we shape and finish the completed handblown glass vessel.
