There's something magical about guard work from the late 70s that guard work from the 90s and thenceforth lacks. What is it, you ask? Couldn't tell you, I dunno.

We're all a product of our temporal environment. It's magical to you because you identify with it. Someone who was in DCI or many HS MBs that emulate DCI in, say, the late 80s when I was in a HS MB don't connect with this, because DC & MB had gone to curvilinear and away from what was the typical DC/MB fare of the post-War to post-VN War timeframe. The kids in DCI probably don't identify as much with what ID with, though I think it's an organic development the same way the 80s saw an organic development from the late 70s, which was an organic development from the Old Guard pre-DCI.

@@anthonykaiser974 You might be surprised to hear that I was born in the year 2000 and was first exposed to drum corps in 2014, the year I first did marching band. Also, I much prefer fromt ensembles from the early 2000s over anything before or since.

@@anthonykaiser974 Excellent question. 1. While I think two-piston G-bugles and their predecessors are interesting, being limited to two valves is perhaps too frustrating to the marching member; the third piston should have been legalized long ago in spite of its expense. 2. I'm okay with guard work from 1988 but find 1988's guard uniforms to be laughably dated, plus they don't match the hornline uniforms at all with the exception of the Cadets and the Bluecoats. 3. I love the repertoire selections and horn/drum arrangements of everyone except for Spirit, which I have a love/hate relationship with. 4. As alluded to earlier, I prefer the sound of an early 2000s front ensemble due to it being larger, and early 2000s front ensembles had better writing, while 1988 sounds a tad xylophone-heavy and lacks in the marimba department. 5. I enjoy the sound of mylar snare drums, dedicated cymbal lines, and larger marching bass drums, but I lament the passing of Phantom Regiment's 40-inch bottom bass drum after 1984.

Agree in principle, but if you've followed the storyline on adding valves, it was the same folks asking to add the second valve that wanted to hold back on the third (that many wanted anyway) due to cost and the sunk development cost of the manufacturers. 2. dated for 88? Or now? Lots of guard uniforms then were only tangentially related to the wind/percussion block, i.e. color scheme would match, absent a thematic color scheme, and that's about it. They were intentionally trying to stand out for visual effect. My Mom helped sew skirts for my HS guard that doubled as flags. I think it was for Firebird.

Compared to Blue Stars '78, this show destroyed the original Blue Stars. If you saw the live broadcast on PBS (my friends and I taped the finals on a two-reel sony a-v (3 reels total) and would watch a reel a day during lunch every day my jr. Year in high school.), boy, there was no corps that night that got my crickets than the Blue Stars. It's like half the corps aged out in '78, and the staff left. Comments? Blue Stars came in 13th in 1980 , then basically crashed and burned, then reincarnated as a top-flight Div. III corps.
