Tips and tricks to using blue tape with CA glue: 1) don't use too much glue, just a few dabs (depending on the length of the piece) down the centre will do you 2) apply a strip of tape from one end of the piece to the other (so that the tape is visible on the ends for lining them up) with a matching length on the bottom piece or place the pieces of tape at the ends of the board if it's long so that the tape is visible on both pieces, this makes it extremely easy to match them up rather than just a piece in the middle that you hope lines up. Using the above 2 steps has never failed me nor have I gotten glue on my wood or had tape/glue stick to the wood like you did and unless the piece(s) you are sticking together are small, always use the wider tape. Unfortunately, good usable double sided tape is expensive and hard to find here, while CA glue and blue painters tape are easy to find and easy to use if done right.

One thing that Ben from Crimson Guitars does, is leave the strips on the top facing surface oversize to avoid spillage. He uses that as a reference for the strips on the bottom facing piece, applies the glue, aligns the strips and quickly flips the top piece over. He then trims the excess before doing whatever needs to be done.

I just 'found' the blue tape / CA glue trick a couple months ago, and started using it for some projects around the shop. I'd always had fits with 'traditional' double-sided tape - probably because I was using whatever I could find at the local home/hardware store, which was frequently carpet tape, or narrow strips for hanging pictures, etc. Blue tape and CA glue / accelerant is fairly readily available for the person like me who only occasionally needs a bit here or there - and the rest of the time, the blue tape certainly doesn't go unused. I can certainly see where someone who needs it regularly might be better served with the specialty tape, even if you have to order it in.

I use this technique quite a bit for various things. One of which is to hold down a piece on my bench for hand planing when the piece is difficult to hold down any other way. Works like a charm. I haven't had to use the accelerator.

Is it true that the accelerator is just water ?
@chanel451512 жыл бұрын
Nearly I think. I have feeling it has some sort of pH adjustment that triggers the reaction faster, maybe slightly acidic but now I can't remember. Ehhh, not sure like my earlier reply that much. And I think I saw a YT test trying to use water, and it didn't work. I think Wood Whisperer. Not a pH thing though, near as I can tell. Here is a paragraph from web of interest, but can't say full understand. We need a chemist, lol. Super glue accelerators are typically acetone-based, using acetone as the primary evaporating agent. This means that once applied, the acetone evaporates leaving an active accelerator ingredient on the surface. The glue drives up quickly and firmly on the intended surface.

Hi Jody, you offer a good analysis for why blue tape vs Double sided tape should be considered. I use both contingent on what I am doing. I will say that when doing scroll saw work I will use the the blue tape method. The tape also acts as a lubricant for the scroll saw blade. And is removed easily on fine work. If I am routing a part the double stick is my go to method. The problem is finding the best Double Stick tape . Just last week I was searching in the big box store for an acceptable candidate for a double sided tape. I found one that I am testing. It offers good holdings power. It is inexpensive $5.98 for 42 feet X 1.41 inches and so far it is working for my projects. Thanks for taking the time to make this video! 😁🛫

One down side to the double sided tape method (maybe the blue tape too, I haven’t tried it), is that if you’re using MDF as your pattern, repeated use of the tape can removed part of the MDF each time. In time it doesn’t stick as well.

For my CNC router, I used double sided tape for a very long time and once in a while it would fail and my piece would be dragged around by the spinning bit. So I tried the blue tape method. It has NEVER failed and I never used the double sided tape again. The trick is to simply cover the bottom of the piece with the tape. Blue Tape is cheap. Double sided tape is expensive for some reason. I think it cost me $35 for a roll. Only thing I can say negatively about the glue is the fumes until it dries.
@InspireWoodcraft4 жыл бұрын
Nothing worse than ruined projects! $35 a roll is way too expensive! If you want to try tape again I would look at this lddy.no/m666. Although a new supplier for me, it's the tape I've been using for years and it always holds. At the last place that I worked before going out on my own, we used it for full-size commercial CNC beds and it worked great.

Nice tips on using the CA glue and accelerator. Just one question: is the accelerator that necessary? It seems like everyone used CA alone just fine for years before this accelerator stuff showed up.
@InspireWoodcraft4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think necessary is a subjective word, unfortunately. The accelerator is great and speeds things up. But in all honesty we’re talking seconds so I suppose it depends on how much time that you have. Because of its instant bond you can get things instantly tacked together in unique or awkward positions. Something like this situation, like making double sided tape, probably not. But it sure is handy at other times.

The answer is yes, as a Woodturner we use a very thin shellac prior to applying super glue. The glue will flow into the check and now you can sand back to wood. Lacquer will also work if you plan to finish with lacquer (you can sand the lacquer off), lacquer clogs sand paper more readily.

Starbond (the brand that I use) sells their bottles with replaceable narrow tips that fit onto the nozzle. I've found that the narrow tips fit into just about any spot, sort of like a needle. They're long too, so you can see what you're doing. I don't need to use them often but I sure am glad when I do need them. I might be wrong but I believe they also sell extra tips.

The alignment of blue tape to blue tape is easily solved. You apply the first piece of tape to the first piece of wood then apply the CA glue to that tape. You then apply the back of the second piece of tape to the pre-glued first piece of tape so that the tape adhesive faces outwards on the first piece of wood. You then press that piece of wood onto the second piece of wood. The 2 pieces of tape are aligned, you can control what happens to the glue and still achieve the same result. QED.

@Otaku4374 жыл бұрын
If you make the blue tape (both top and bottom) longer/wider than the piece you are gluing down, then you can use the tails sticking beyond the wood to align the bottom and top tape strips. This will only work with a single strip, but I'm almost always using a single 3" strip. Also if the material being taped down has any tendency to curl, then I find spray adhesive works far better than CA glue. Thanks for the pointer to the double sided paper tape. I'll give it a try.

That would be the very definition of having it both ways, although I’m not sure why you would want things to be horrible AND work. I provided a quick and easy solution. 1) Your "fact" is indeed not a fact, as I've already pointed out. 2) I AM looking for comments, just ones that make sense and are constructive, not argumentative. 3) I can afford to buy blue tape, hence why I use it in so many videos and have several rolls all over the shop. 4) I have a job that pays perfectly fine, thank you very much. 5) That's awesome that you have such an inexpensive supplier for tape! 6) Every professional maker that I have worked with, not people on the internet with questionable actual experience, has used double sided paper tape (and other double sided tapes) for everything from large scale CNC beds to small parts manufacture. What I show in my videos comes from real-life experience. I am not trying to sell anyone an argument, I'm sharing my knowledge and experiences with people who can benefit. I have not claimed that the blue tape and CA glue doesn't work or that some people don't use it. Quite the opposite if you actually watch the video and listen to what I said. I simply showed a method and product that in my opinion, in real world uses, works better for me and may work better for others as well. 7) I didn't write you with a contradiction.
