Sadly, there is at least one major audio rental house here in Toronto, that when you ask for gaffer's tape, they'll give you a roll of silver duct tape. They aren't being cheap - they really don't understand the difference. For those who aren't aware of the difference: gaffer's tape is a cloth tape, and the adhesive holds well but does not leave a gummy residue when you take the tape off. It can also withstand the extremely high temperatures of a theatrical or film light fixture. Duct tape, on the other hand, is a plastic tape (vinyl?) reinforced with cloth threads. The adhesive leaves a horrendous gummy mess when you peel it off.

in the UK we call duct tape, duct tape, and gaffer tape is a cloth dack tape, also blue tape is painter or masking tape and masking/ painters tape is cream colOURed. but i use masking tape (cream or imported blue ) when picture frameing to hold the corners while i dry test , and when finished i use it to cover the fitting staples that hold the picture or mirror in place stopping anything snagging the staples, weirdly I also use masking tape to mask off areas like glass or panels when I paint or varnish projects !
@Andyloveswood2 жыл бұрын
"Blue tape" is not the same as masking tape. Isn't all duct tape "cloth duct tape"? In the UK, would you really use expensive Gaffer's tape as duct tape? Seems like a terrible waste of money to me. Duct tape is for sealing HVAC ducts. I put bright colored duct tape on the corners of shelves where I think I might bump my head. Doesn't work very well--I still bump my head on the shelves. Duct tape doesn't make you smarter. I'll try Gaffer's tape. Seriously, there are lots of uses for cheap duct tape where relatively-expensive Gaffer's tape in not needed.

I have a plane i always use on my shooting board. The side is just a little shy of 90 degrees. A couple of strips of tape sorts this out and avoids the need to fiddle with the lateral adjuster each time.

Some good ideas for blue tape I wouldn’t have thought of! However I’m just curious, are the dovetails in the drawer at the end of this video facing the “wrong” way? I always thought you wanted the tails on the sides of the drawer to keep it from pulling apart or are they just decorative dovetails?
@WoodByWrightHowTo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. From the standard conventional viewpoint yes the dovetails are facing the wrong direction. However flipping the tails around is something that has been done for a long time if they're going to be showing on the face. The reason being is if you turn them the other way then they look like finger joints and nobody likes to look at that. As to the structural integrity honestly doesn't make any practical difference one way or the other. It's a clue is going to fail the glue is going to fail but it's generally going to fail because of other problems not just because the glue is going to fail. And if it's the type of thing that worries the maker he can easily just put a pin down through the tails and lock them together.

There were several that I had never thought of before, thanks Old habits die hard. I painted professionally for decades and I really don’t like blue tape all that well as it should. Scotch brand painters tape is much better. Not a the cheap stuff. (2040) it maybe hard to find these days since Everyone seems to be in love with blue tape but it had cost me a lot of pain and dollars fixing it because it wouldn’t hold. The green frog tape is not too bad and it’s my go to tape these days but again stay away from the cheap tape regardless of the color.

I found the quality of 3M blue tape is going down the hill. The paper is weaker than the glue is sticky, so it often tear vertically while I was pealing it out from the roll. I found an old one hidden behind one of my drawers and its paper is tougher than those recently bought ones.

I use the blue stuff a lot as spacers: getting #$*&@! dust collector hose fittings to fit the other hose or the equipment outlet; making a spacing jig a little wider or taller; straighten something sitting crooked. I've used it to wrap fingers when I had to do a little close wood carving and I couldn't find anything else. And the obvious one: tape a saw cut line to reduce tearout. Bonus: If someone were to use Duck Tape in the shop instead of Gaff(er) Tape, would you then call that gaffe tape?

You do know what gaffer is slang for in England?
@WoodByWrightHowTo2 жыл бұрын
A boss or the person I charge. It is from the same place as the position of a gaffer. In the theater they are up in the air and higher then others. The tape was invented for the theater lighting industry over 100 years ago. And as gaffers were the ones that used it they refered to it as gaffer tape.
