Back in the 1960s my family was on a camping trip in Yosemite. We were excited to see a bird's nest over our campsite and looked forward to watching the little family for a week. But it soon became evident that mama was tangled in something. She would try to fly off but was tethered to the nest by a string or ribbon. We alerted a park ranger who said, That's nature; leave it alone. We and other campers were quite distressed by this and finally, to everyone's relief, another park ranger climbed a ladder and freed her. Thank you for freeing Biddy! It's not always in an animal's best interests to intervene, but sometimes it's just obvious.

So sad for the babies but happy to hear Biddy survived thanks to your intervention. I wonder if entanglement in hair is common? I know a lot of people put hair out for bird nests. Lovely wildlife images at the end. I look forward to your next video :)

I have never seen it happen ! But I have heard human hair is what you cant put out for fear of what happened happening :)

@@FionnODonoghue I should have mentioned that I've seen some people put out dog hair not human. A very rare occurrence then.

We had House Wren Birds nesting and breeding in a flowerpot in the wardrobe. This is now the 2nd brood in a year. Luckily the young animals are very safe!

I've heard that long human hair is dangerous for bird nests because it can wrap around babies and birds. So glad you saved the momma bird.

Maybe change the bird box to have a removable lid/side for easy access ?

With a Lock&Key, not a latch a Corvid could figure out.

She was too afraid to go back into the nest! She didn't understand why she was trapped! She probably won't ever get in a nestbox again out of fear of enclosed spaces.

I also thought that but she cam back the following year to the same box amazingly in this year's nest box series 😁

@@FionnODonoghue Just curious, how do you know it's the same bird that got stuck?

Dude calm the fuck down. Its a bird, not a person. She will probably forget about it and try again next year. She's not going to have PTSD

@@justbailey90 Face markings and very similar behavior ! Off course i cant be 100% but im 99% sure as it is also common place for bird to re-use nest box's year by year,

They can't speculate on her experience but you can? None of us know exactly what's she's thinking or feeling, but we can speculate. She's obviously distressed and thinking about how to escape. Traumatic things happen to us in our homes and we still return. Doesn't mean we're unaffected.

Once love doves made a nest on a fur tree right in front of my kitchen window. I was watching them build the nest, make eggs, nurse the babies. I think after 1 month babies were quite grown and a magpie appeared and ate both of them. She ate them early morning while we were sleeping, so one morning i woke up and saw an empty nest. I thought chicks left the building, but when i came out i saw a small corpse and a magpie sitting on the roof. It came later to inspect the nest once more. And poor mother was coming and looking for babies. It breaks my heart still. I was crying and so sad for a long time. Remembering them still makes me sad. I m glad doves never made nest there again, would be too much to experience that again

Could a young man have a bigger heart? Such a nice contrast to so many other behaviors we get spoon-fed every day. Inspired.

Really getting tired of the comments about not helping the chicks. Did no one look at the time stamp before typing? Even if it was not early morning, he can't monitor them 24/7. It's so easy to judge from behind a keyboard. (I say as I also key this in....) How many of the trolls here have ever built a bird house or thought to capture it on film so the world could see? Keep your chin up. Watching nature can be amazing and also break your heart in a second ...
