June 18 2018 I had a female Blue wing teal female with about 8 ducklings in my yard. My neighbors cat caught one duckling. I managed to get her to let go of it. Now with that note mama duck took off to higher grass area. My question is what to feed it and take care of it till I can set it free

Baby turkey food is good plus chicken scratch is good for babies. You can switch to different aged turkey food as ducklings grow. Shovelers cannot eat adult turkey food, they will starve to death and you won't know it. Stay with baby turkey food for them. Plant mint, peppermint, and spearmint it's like candy to ducks. You will need a fortified pen with a top and electric fencing on it or your ducks will be killed by raccoons. A yard pond is enough for them to be happy. 5 feet deep especially if you want diver ducks. Redheads are the cheapest and easiest divers. They can be bullies. Pintails, shovelers, and any teal are pretty laid back.

I forgot to mention raccoons can chew through chicken wire. You will need to bury heavy duty wire under ground by your pen to keep raccoons out. Ducks are fun, beautiful, easy pets, but they can break your heart if you don't protect them from predators.

I shoot green wings and the odd blue wing up in northern Ontario in October, is that unusual?

Not at all. Females and juveniles hang around in northern mn til mid-third week of october.. you'll rarely if ever see a mature drake on season here

What's sick is people that don't understand basic biology and the need to control populations to ensure a healthy future for that species. Too many birds on reduced habitat=disease=die offs in large amounts. We had avian influenza come through mn last year and killed a few million migratory birds of all species, especially the snow geese.
