I love buliwyf's character. Even though knowing he'll die in seconds. He came out as a hero to serve his people and die alongside with his brothers. And he managed to kill the leader by in which victory was granted for them. Even we must not forget about buliwyf's dog who was loyal to him and serve his master till death. Such character and courage is priceless and precious for sure. Let him be remembered by us forever

The story is that in the 80's, archeologists found a hidden cache of scrolls that survived in the Dead Sea library, and in one of them, the story of The 13th Warrior was there. They translated it, and it caught the eye of Hollywood somehow, and they turned it into what it is today.

Nothing like a few dudes ready to make a final stand. Doesn’t get better than that. Absolutely love how this scene plays out. The outsider, in a place far from home, and in a situation he could never have contemplated, asks his God a simple request: let me spend the last few moments together with my friends and go out, protecting the helpless against evil He joins with his new brothers in their chant, and they all reconcile the fact that they have only a short time left but they’re going to go out like men, welcomed with honor by those who went before.

As far as I am concerned, this is the BEST iteration of Beowulf out there, even excelling over the original. My word, how I adore this film. I've watched it several times throughout the years and I never get bored of it. I love the senses that this film instills, especially during the first viewing. These *creatures* are watching our norse travellers the whole time they investigate this unfamiliar land. The eary, high pitched whistle that signifies a dwelling evil. That sense of mystery surrounding these *creatures* and their origins. The big reveal of their true identities was a genius work of realism. The bond and courage the group share is a joy to watch. The bellowing horns in the soundtrack as the fiends do battle. I love everything about this movie.

The battle prayer of ibn Fadlan speaks deeply into my Episcopalian soul. When it came my time to walk the walk for the first time way back when, I wish that I'd had the words to say this prayer. But when I prayed "Please God, don't let me fuck this up." it was ibn Fadlan's prayer I had in my heart.

@@BlueBaron3339 When this movie came out, I was a medieval reenactor in a Vikingr warband. This flick was our training film 😆 I've known some practicing pagans /heathens /Ashatrur folks and some of them are real stand up humans. Some of them are flakier than box of Raisin Bran. So, about par for the course. But 'for all I should have thought, but did not think' [etc] really spoke to the Abrahamic monotheist in me. Which takes nothing whatsoever away from 'Lo! There I see my father...' That speaks to a primal part of all of us, I think.

In the Book “ Eaters of the Dead”, The story does not end. The book ends with an enormous creature raising from the sea in front of the boat Ibn is traveling on. Michael Creighton cleverly writes this story claiming at the start as tale he found hidden and lost in libraries that he came across. The movie was made as part of a production deal with Creighton to make one of his other books into a film, so I think it was not highly publicized upon its release. But I find it as good if not better then anything Creighton wrote including Andromeda Strain, Coma, and Jurassic Park.

@@StinkyGreenBud Well, it's supposed to be a joke. A joke is "something not to be taken seriously, a trifling matter", according to Merriam-Webster. My comment also contained something like a self-ironic remark, referring to the process of getting older. So even I, as someone born in 1987, will witness staples and products of my youth falling into irrelevance, a process every generation inevitably has to endure and finally learn to accept. It's also fascinating for people who like movies and moviemaking and the history of movies to see what difference 22 years can make in the way movies are produced. The differences and sharp contrasts between movies then and movies now are significant. And yes, this movie is 22 years old, which is ancient in terms of technological development. So yeah, grandpa, blathering about "the good old days" of the 40s to 70s just shows your ultimate insignificance.

I was floored to learn that the story was heavily inspired by Beowulf. So yea, it is a Viking/Old English story. Beowulf was an Old English story about Danes after all. Dr. Jackson Crawford has cool video explaining the references to Norse myths/ hero stories, and Beowulf that Michael Crichton used for his book that the movie is based on.
