Seems nobody at my HS knows what a mellophone is. I mentioned it to a senior, said it's kinda like a trumpet with a larger bell, and they said it was a "Marching French horn" and that he'd never heard of a mellophone before. Am I missing something, or are they the same thing?

They aren’t the same thing, marching french horns have different fingerings and have a different sound and typically use mouthpieces similar to French horns, Mello tend to use mouthpieces similar to trumpets and fingering similar to a trumpet while still being in the key of F. They really arnt the same.
