Update: I got cut at the December camp ~ we read through a new exercise in about 15 minutes, took it out to the parking lot and were expected to perform the new beats from memory while doing box drill. Reading music and especially memorizing it quickly is something that I've struggled with my entire life. I grew up playing a lot of piano, but even with classical instruction I was never able to learn to read sheet music. Since I could always figure out the music after my teacher played it for me, the assumption was that my ability to read was stifled by a reliance on my ears. Midway through highschool, I finally got diagnosed with dyslexia, which clearly explained all of the problems I'd been experiencing. In college, I luckily get 'academic accommodations' to compensate for this disability, but obviously this sort of compensation doesn't make any sense in drum corps. I got cut from Bluecoats in 2021 for the same reason (not being able to learn to beats fast enough), and going into the 2023 camp I new very well what my weakness was. I researched the issue, and determined what I believe to be the best method to improve sight reading/memory retention, mass exposure to new music. So throughout my preparation for the 23' audition, I learned dozens of licks and show chunks. I think I made progress, but ultimately did not improve nearly enough to keep up with the other kids at camp. I could make a video explaining this process and what I've learned, but it would obviously look a lot better as a win story rather than a loss. I made bluestars in 2021 but (regretfully) decided not to march for various reasons I won't get in to. So, this year is my ageout, and, I've never marched anywhere. This is disappointing, mainly because I've probably spent 15% of my awake hours since highschool with sticks in my hands, and I don't want all that time to be waisted. I'm gona try to use the skills I've developed in other ways, potentially in the form of informative video essays about drumming on this channel ~

Bluecoats has a ton of people audition for them so its natural that its that competitive. But since this is your ageout, march somewhere else!! There are more corps out there than just bluecoats and you may find your home in someplace youd never expect it.

Sorry to hear that man😔 You're a beast and I want to play like you for when it's time for my stab at Coats. Hopefully you can march somewhere and have a great summer🔥 You made stars in 21 so the math would math if you'd make it this year, Mandarins is sick but they probably have a lot of people returning since 23 was a young line (BK would love to have you #MFBK)

I sat and watched and as a 90's Division 1(now World Class) marching snare line member I am being totally honest, while you have solid hand technique, I heard where your playing tempo was either ahead or behind the met by a fraction of a beat on the simple warm ups which is something that can possibly be fixed while in an ensemble setting. If I were the Caption Head I would put you on B Line snare for the first camp to see if that can be fixed then would invite you back for a second audition camp to see if you improved within a months time following what you learned at the first camp. If you did and the issue was fixed, I would move you to A Line, if not I would give you the option to either wait another year or be on the cymbal line for your rookie year as I do see some solid talent there that can be worked with.
