Lawn Care Life

I share a story of a lawn care customer who was not my ideal client. I have a few neighborhoods which hold the majority of my best customers. I love for them to have a small yard. I also prefer they pay with a credit card. I certainly don't want complaining though I need to be a good listener to address their concerns. I believe it is very important to target your ideal customers. Also, it is okay to have less than ideal customers, but there comes a point where the customers needs to be let go. That is okay. It simply needs to be handled in a respectable manner. I hope you enjoy my story.

been pretty lucky with all my customers so far. A few new ones to note this year though😅: 1. A new seasonal customer that is always late with pay, bot so late i have do a work stopage, but always late with payment, & has been tipping when payments are made😇 #2. Your cut was too expensive for us, we don't want you back........ been there 4 times since they told me i was too expensive🤣 3. A new potentional seasonal mowing customer, left a note on my house door, because they couldn't find my #. I did NOT see this note till dark one night after a full 12 hour day of mowing. Called them in the afternoon, but they had already gotten someone else. Going there tomorrow though🤣😇 loving all of this.

That is an amazing way to handle the situation. A lot of the time as small business owners we get in the mindset that we need to put up with the crap of unprofessional people to succeed. Honestly I’ve gotten to the point that if you don’t fit my standards you’ll need to find someone else.

As someone in his first season of mowing, I was the guy who would take everyone I could get, but I'm quickly learning red flags to look out for. Generally, when I find a non-ideal client, I still give them a quote, but I usually price them out. Usually, an insane price makes them move on, and if they do happen to bite, at least I get paid for my headache. Working out okay so far. I just need more clients... The good thing is that most of my new clients are from word of mouth and neighbors of clients who are thrilled with my work! 😁

I'm on my 3rd year mowing solo myself. Those red flags can be a life saver. And I will flat out decline a lawn if I know I can't do a job I'll be happy with. Or gated back yards with small gates.

When you run a business you have to become more efficient. By selecting ideal customers and weeding out the not so ideal is a real life business strategy that actually works. You only gain this knowledge after doing what you do for a while. It doesn't come to you at first because you want every customer. Jason, you did the right thing and your thinking is how success works. Always trust your first instinct never second guess yourself especially after making it this far.

Good Customer: customer who has really nice yard and expects good service Good Customer: customer with crappy yard, and understands the company simply cutting their lawn doesn’t have a magic wand, but will make it look better after cuts. Bad Customer: customer with really crappy unkept yard, that thinks hiring someone to cut their lawn will transform their weed infested, overgrown, neglected yard, with crumbling sidewalks and retaining walls into an award winning yard.

I just let go of a customer for the first time. Nerve-racking but I feel much better now.

That's great. I don't think I've ever gotten rid of a customer and actually regretted it. Usually it is for the best

I guess it boils down to how bad do want to have the additional businesses . Sounds like you’re doing well and content maintaining. Being self employed does allow you the latitude of being picky.

Some people expect instant results. It takes AT LEAST an entire season to turn a yard around. Sometimes more, depending on how much pre-em is gonna be needed to take care of weeds and all. It takes time. Also, who the hell still uses checks? lmao!! Dump that guy.

Let's keep the sports analogies going. As soon as Mike Tyson hits you in the face you know you're in trouble. This guy is one of those who disrespects small businesses. He's going to be a headache and nitpick you to dead. Take the face punch, glad you dropped him and moved on

When I heard the "I've been pulling weeds every day!" woahhh buddy, red flag. This guy is bored out of his mind or obsessive. Not my type!

I agree. I had a customer who walked behind me and was picking up leafs during a fall cleanup. Sorry. But sometimes you just don't get everyone.

It’s true, the weeds seed and re appear at certain times of the year. A fresh lawn that you’ve put down and treated, won’t have the seasonal weed problems therefore much easier to maintain and control weeds
