I recently went to Lowes looking for the corona as i have seen them there before. They didnt have it anymore but had the blue hawk instead. Decided to get one and i am very impressed with it. Throws sparks like crazy and yes cheaper.

Good vid, try pulling the ferro rod away from the tinder against the striker instead of striking toward it... prevents the tinder from being blown away or out.

Good video, Thank you. Have you thought about buying a carbide saw for around six dollars at walmarts and cutting out 15 or 20 strikers?

I got the blue hawk yesterday. Tried it o. A few ferro rods and it worked great....for a while, then it basically stopped throwing sparks. I cleaned it, tried it again and it would barely throw any sparks. Left it alone, got up this morning and tried it again..on my Bear Grylls ferro rod it worked great for about 10 or 12 strikes then it just stopped working again. Any ideas why?

It might not have a 90 degree edge anymore.

I hate to think the edge would have got ground down from just using it on ferro rods

I saw your video and decided to try one of the carbide part off tools which is basically what you are using. I came to the conclusion that the pieces it shaves off of a ferrel rod are to big to burn and it wastes material on the rod. Did you see the same results after multiple tries?

The carbide edge allows you to dig into the rod easier. The benefit of these sharpeners is to be able to create a spark with far less effort than a traditional striker. It can take off more material, but I never experienced pieces too large to burn. This is primarily due to not applying the amount of pressure against the rod necessary to create that issue. More sparks from 1 rod using different strikers will always be from scraping more material off the rod. If I ever experienced a situation where the material I was scraping didn't burn, I would back off on the amount of pressure I was using. Again, the benefit of these carbide sharpeners is to be able to create a spark with less effort, which would be of help in situations where manipulation of hands/fingers may be hindered(extreme cold, for example).

You make a very good point, maybe I am pushing it too hard for carbide vs a normal scraper. I guess what i invisioned was a massive spark that would burn for awhile once I used the carbide tool. I used a 6'x1/2" ferrel rod and did alot of damge to it testing but was not happy. I think I screwed up and thank you for the advise.
