It will also get even sharper if towards the end you decrease pressure you're applying on the edge. I like to get so light and use just the weight of the sharpener towards the end to achieve razor sharpness.

Exactly the type of compact tool we need. With a couple bands, this could be mounted to the kydex knife sheath beside the ferrocerium rod, and do it's job day in and day out. I was actually looking for a compact diamond hone but this is a must try. Thank you for the demo, well worth the time to watch.

Your welcome. I agree 100%. Another thing you can do is to cut the handle down, make it shorter to fit in something like an altoids kit. But any smaller and it is a bit harder to use. If you find any other uses or modifications let me know. Ps thanks for sub.

The closer you get to finishing, try lighting up on the pressure you apply almost like stropping. It gets better results...I have the Sharpens Best which is very close which I love!! Definitely a learning curve though!!

Funny I had a Blue Hawk version of this in my tool box for many, many years when I got my first axe at a Lowes. I never ever used it. It is still in its blister pack with a tiny tube of lube that has oozed over to the sharpener. Why I never used it was because forever I had an Arkansas stone, and afterward got a Lansky puck. I'm talking maybe twenty years ago. At that time I had gotten several accessories for everything from oiling the wood handles to several sharpening aides. Well the Blue Hawk sharpener was one of those items that was interesting but never got to use. Gonna try it now. See if works out. Made in Taiwan. We'll see.

Well I used it to sharpen Knives, sissors, and even brought back a Wiss pair of aviation shears back to life!!! Yes I had to learn it. It took time to understand what it supposed to feel like when you're doing it right. Well its better at accomplishing the sharpening task so much that I immediately purchased several to have at home, work, in the truck, and in the go bag. Highly recommend it. Should have tried it sooner.

I own a speedy sharpener and yes there is a learning curve I suggest get a cheap knife to practice on or even a butter knife this tool does work if you master it I just have one but I will purchase several more just to have backup if I lose one as he said light strokes are all you need for tools like axes and gardening tools heavier strokes may need to be used but in the end once you have a working edge all ya need to do is maintain it is to hone it .

@saldomino1639 I am glad you put the time in to learn it. I know since I made this video I have sharpened countless knives With this tool. Also Hatchets, axes, Machetes and kitchen knives. I carry one in my pack and it has become one of my trusted tools. If you haven't tried it yet, use it to sharpen serrations on a knife. I actually sharpened some old steak knives with it and they cut beautifully now. Just use the honing step on the serrations. Works like a charm. Thanks for coming back, You just made my night! Happy new year!

Would a lube help when sharpening? And would stropping aid as a final touch? Thanks. Subbed.
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Жыл бұрын
Never thought of trying lube in the sharpening process with one of these. The only time there is resistance when using one for sharpening is when the blade is dull or you have a burr. Could try it and see what happens next time I use mine. Yes, stropping if you're looking for that next level of sharpness can't hurt. To me in a lot of ways these sharpeners just replace a stone in my kit. The fact that I can use it to also make tinder and as a ferro rod striker is a nice triple bonus. Thanks for the Sub! :)

I have one I’m confused because it shows to hone you need to turn sharpener to the other side and then hone that’s what the instructions show you are shaving and honing on the same side any comments?
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Жыл бұрын
So I'm not really sure what the heck you're asking. I even went back and reviewed my video trying to figure out what the heck you're asking. At timestamp 8 minutes and 46 seconds you can clearly see me turn the tool to do a honing pass. And as I said in the video I do it a little bit differently than the instructions. But it works for me. The difference between the cutting and honing is that the cutting is more of a push. Will the honing feels like more of a drag. I hope that makes sense. You see this is the one thing about the internet that's always difficult. Somebody tries to articulate a question and text, and sometimes we're kind of lost in translation. I hope this makes sense if not hit me up try to be a little more clear with your question.

@@charlesartificer2158 Thanks for reaching out ! I seen how you use it you use the same carbide side to shave and hone I tried it and it worked I guess what I’m saying you use less pressure to hone than to shave off the metal right ?
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Жыл бұрын
@@saldomino1639 yeah no problem reaching out brother I have no problem answering questions. It's just that when I don't understand the question it's a little difficult. As to using the same side really I'm not. Before the 8 minute and 40 second Mark I'm doing a a sharpening cut if you will. After that I turn the tool to do a honing run. So if you look at the tool you really have two sides or two corners if you will. Because I'm using it in my right hand I'm using one corner to sharpen and one corner to hone. And yes I use a lot less pressure to hone than I do in a sharpening cut. But at the same time it's a different angle that I'm using so you feel the need to use more pressure on a sharpening cut than you do on a hone. Hope that makes sense.

I think I may get one as a nice addition to my sharpening set. Carbide works quick but yes you need a light touch because it will cut off a lot of metal quickly if you’re not careful. I favor a diamond rod and stroping but to fix a dull or damaged edge carbide is quick.

Can it be used for a lawnmower blade?
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Жыл бұрын
Yes as long as the blade is not to dull to begin with. I was helping a guy I know get his blades off to sharpen and they were completely rounded over. If your blades are like that you will take forever to get them back in shape using this tool. As long as there is some edge there you can sharpen with this tool. Just depends on how dull it is.

Yes. I carry one in each of my backpacks as part of my maintenance kit for knife or axe. Plus they make a great striker for a ferro rod and a nice scraper to get fine shavings from fat wood. Also works well for shavings off a magnesium block. In short they have many uses and I wouldn't leave home without one if I have a choice.

Do these get worn out
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Ай бұрын
@808jonjon Great question. In normal use no. Tungsten Carbide hardness is a 9 on the Mohs scale. Diamond is a 10. With that said it is very hard and wear resistant. But being hard it can be fragile and will chip if dropped on a hard surface. So with normal use, keeping the cover over the carbide when not in use I am willing to say it will outlast the average human being. I think your more likely to loose it or chip it from poor handling than wear it out. I own like 4 of these. I have one on my main bench I use almost daily to maintain a razor edge on whatever pocket knife I am carrying or using. I have one in my backpack I take with me to work for similar reasons. And I have a few in my 4 season fire kits. I think they are an amazing tool and if you can master it you will wonder how you ever lived without one. Thanks for the comment and views. have a great night.

Tungstan been used as a sharpener for longer than their ip on a design. Thing i hate about this way of sharpening is once you do this on a blade its such a pain to go back to true scandy etc. End up hogging tonnes of material off to remove the bevel you make
