Thank you for the lovely demonstrations and your explanation of how structure is given to Sumi-e paintings by the watermarks from different strokes. So many people do not appreciate that practice, correct strokes, studying and using age-old techniques help us Westerners to appreciate how wonderful Sumi-e is for us. Never can I hope to create the beautiful writing of the paintings, but I shall keep trying. Supplies from Marie's are very desirable and helpful also!!

@lilmantt1992 Yes, certain regular watercolors are ok to be used on absorbent rice paper, but for best result use Marie's Chinese painting colors, which are available at our online store. Western watercolor tends to bleed when rewet during wet mounting or stretching. So you need stretch either before painting, or use silicone dry-mounting paper to mount it in order to avoid color running.

The happiness of the fish, from a famous story with Zhuangzi: Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling along the bridge over the Hao River. Such is the happiness of fish.” Huizi said, “You are not a fish, so whence do you know the happiness of fish?” Zhuangzi said, “You are not I, so whence do you know I don’t know the happiness of fish?” Huizi said, “I am not you, to be sure, so I don’t know what it is to be you. But by the same token, since you are certainly not a fish, my point about your inability to know the happiness of fish stands intact.” Zhuangzi said, “Let’s go back to the starting point. You said, ‘Whence do you know the happiness of fish?’ Since your question was premised on your knowing that I know it, I must have known it from here, up above the Hao River.”
