Thanks for sharing. I just used a little rust remover on a 1944 mosin. I didn't realize it would take the old blueing off and kind of panicked. This looks super easy and now I'm excited for my next project.

I do this with permanent blue as well. But the 2 things I do differently is I take and sand the barrel down to the bare metal and never blue over existing bluing. It just makes it more even and after I let it set in between coats I wipe it down with warm water instead of cold or really hot water. I found it just helps the process and also makes the bluing darker. I also degrease with alcohol a couple times after I sand it down to the bare metal. And use medical gloves to keep from getting oils from my hands on the surface then finish with a light coat of oil on it wiping it down to take off all the excess oils. I have a gun I did about 15 years ago and it is still in great condition.

If you use HOT water the process will go faster and the bluing will be deeper.. heating the metal a bit is always a good idea. Also not that you want my opinion but as a gunsmith myself i use vans instant gun blue, it is FAR better than anything I've ever seen before. highly recommended.

what I normally do is to put the super Blue into a separate container.(little mounts at time) that way you do not contaminate the bottle from anyting off the piece you're bluing.And you're bottle is still fresh and clean. nicely done thanks for sharing..

Excellent video...I have blued several guns over the years along with more than a few knives. Super blue is my go to for all things like this. For knives which are harder steel I find it takes 4-6 coats buffed with OOOO steel wool in between.

Yep. That's how it's done folks. I browned my old Glenfield 68 .22 with vinegar in much the same way. I heated the barrel up on my wood stove first. Turned out great after 3 coats buffed with steel wool in between. Holds up pretty good too. Give it a try if you got an old beater sitting around.

I would use finer sandpaper and 4 ought steel wool. Also, there are tons of videos on blueing guns but very few on fixing rust spots on old guns that sat in a closet for 20 years. I have one with perfect bluing except for 3 or 4 areas where there is some good old thumb print sized rust I have to fix. Can this be fixed?

I just done a single barrel spartan remington 12ga. Barrel turned out great after 2 coats. The action not so much. I done put 6 coats on the action and used the 0000 wool between each session and several other things and wouldn't darken anymore than it had darken after the 2nd coat. I tried make it dark as the original factory finish, it wouldn't do. I tried everything the super blue the perma blue the gel nothing worked even let set anywhere from 1-5 min to even an hour still wouldn't get any darker. It's like a bright black if that makes sense. Finally got tired messing with it after 3 days slapped the oil on it let it set and called it dandy. Daggum headache dealing with it.

That's because your action was likely alloy instead of steel. Cold Blue process works best on steel

I am a huge fan of the Birchwood Casey Cold Blue. I use it on a lot of the firearms I mod and or fix. One thing I have noticed is the blue really seems to like a coat of oil immediately following the last application when it is "cured" as per the directions. When that oil hits it it turns a really nice deep blue almost black color. It's almost like icing on a cake.

I never had much luck with Birchwood Casey blues. The best blue for me was a "touchup" blue I bought years ago from Numerich Arms (now Gun Parts Corp.). The stuff worked so well I used the last of it to re-blue an old Model 67 .22 Winchester rifle. That rifle looks as good today as the day I blued it. Sadly, I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the touchup blue. :(

About 50 years ago my Dad helped me refinish my shotgun. The blueing that was available back then is better than the stuff they sell today. Probably EPA related.

I just used the Birchwood Casey super blue as well on my New England firearms 410 single shot, how ever my barrel is a grayish color instead of black or dark blue. I ruffed it up alittle with 0000 steel wool, decreased with acetone while wearing gloves, then ruffed up alittle more yet it’s still grayish. Did yours turn out the same way?

worior 786 no way to give you a strength rating. You can apply multiplayer coats I ting you get the coverage or darkness of tint you want. It is not as strong as a factory finish or a hot applied blueing by a gunsmith but will get you by.

Hi One thing I learned long ago, Don't dip the cotton ball into the bottle! You are contaminating the fresh liquid (Plus if you are a bit clumsy you can spill the lot!) better to pour some into a small container and re cap the bottle! Other than that a great video thanks!!!

220 grit is course as hell. No courser then 800 when bluing.maybe 600 iff it is a beater gun.When i make knives i stopp at 1200 and maybe 0000 steelwool and polish by hand or a wheel. but hey

I found out the hard way stainless steel won't blue. At least not on the Ontario Rat 2 knife with D2 steel. I've seen stainless can be blued using heat, but I don't have that kind of equipment.

Use a heat gun or hair dryer. It will open the pores of the metal.

i'll tell ya' Will, never been a fan of cold bluing I don't think it lasts as long or protects as good as hot dip, but that might just be me. one thing I do know though is the Birchwood is better than the Hoppes stuff!

William Collins you may have got a better batch than I did but let me warn you about the hopes brushes, I've had at least 5 brushes and 2 mops come apart in the barrel i'd avoid them if I was you! personally I stick with either outers or kleenbore for rod tips I've never had a problem with them and even wore out they work better than new hopes!!

Bruce Evans have four guns in the living room right now and every one has a shell in the chamber. It has been that way in my house since I was a kid. All guns are loaded even when you think they are not. Amazing how many folks think a loaded gun is dangerous. It is how you treat guns that is dangerous. Always treat them as if they are loaded. Mike Honcho done addressing this. Read the other 100 responses to this same comment. Everyone gets hung up on a loaded gun. All my guns are loaded and no maintenance was done before the gun was unloaded. This is the second video of the day and I loaded it for the first video. However, if all guns were treated as if they are loaded then no one gets hurt. That is the message I intended to get across in the video but evidently very few seam to get it.

007cohiba appreciate your view and you are entitled to an opinion. I have other guns. Many worth several $1,000.00 but this is my favorite because of many things one of which I have no issues taking sandpaper to it when I want and treating it how I want because it is MY GUN and a little bit of fine sandpaper never hurt metal during a refinish. In fact sandpaper is always used during a refinish either you do it or you pay someone else to do it. As far as the shell in the camber as I said in the video treat all weapons as if they are loaded and you will be fine. In fact around my house all weapons are loaded at all times. They seam to work better when that are loaded.

Drums4Astraeus also as a footnote I purchased this gun from a pawn shop several years ago and it was rusted and in very bad shape. I stripped the finish from the metal and wood and completely refinished all parts. It is a fantastic gun and has put meat on the table with every shot. Quality can not be measured in $'s.

Drums4Astraeus Several years back, I lived in North Battleford Sask. Canada. A friend I'll call George had a ranch several generations old. His gun collection held everything from WW1 up to the 1970's but he specialized in Winchesters. One was an original 1873 gold plated .44/40 which was presented to Chief Poundmaker by Winchester during the Riel Rebellion. It showed some signs of rust on the lever and forearm bands but IF you had tried to re-blue the bbl or polish it in any way, you would have made a 50000 dollar gun nearly worthless. The point is that be cautious as to what you attempt to restore - some OLD guns are worth a fortune.

Thomas Caprari really dude, this was the second video in a row. I loaded it in the previous video but you should treat all guns as loaded. Ready the other 100 responses to this same comment. It is astounding how many people freak out about a loaded gun. All my guns are loaded and have been loaded all my life. They have never hurt anyone because they are treated as loaded.

The barrel was a long ways from my head and you never point a gun at something you don’t want to shoot so being loaded or not dose not matter if you treat it as it’s loaded.

Thomas Caprari and as explained in these comments before I could have edited that part out but left it in as an educational item to always treat a gun as loaded but not many people seam to understand that and assume that anyone who does not conform to their way of thinking or personal perfection is an idiot...well appreciate your view. I have responded to this part of the video 100’s of times already. Wish folks would read the comments before making assumptions and commenting.

queenstown kid read the 100 other responses to this but in short a gun is only a club if it is uploaded. Not sure why a loaded gun is such a huge issue. All guns in my house are loaded and they are treated like they are loaded. They have never harmed anyone.

Dude you lost all credibility when you forgot to unload the weapon first. That is a very serious mistake its this mistake that usually results in injuries and deaths in most accidental/Negligent discharges. Rather it was from a prior video or not the fact you didn't check that damn gun before you even started filming it MUCH LESS BREAKING IT DOWN...and were breaking it down with one in the chamber is just DOUBLE FACEPALM. Then you went ahead and uploaded the video like that. You shouldn't be working on guns at all if you cant even remember to remove the live ammo from them first. Honest mistake fine but its also one that you made with live shells sitting right in front of you in the side saddle with an EMPTY SLOT in the saddle INVEST A CHAMBER FLAG YOU ARE FAR TOO FORGETFUL. There's no excuse for having missed an empty pocket in the side saddle with live ammo in front of you. How many times did you handle that gun and forget it was loaded or know it was loaded better yet then forget to check if it was loaded or simply unload it with "RED SHOTSHELLS" in the side saddle and an EMPTY POCKET? Sorry there's no excuse for that that was a negligent mistake big time. You always hear stories about people being murdered by some idiot who was cleaning a loaded gun well people here is how it happens COMPLACENCY and DISTRACTION. If you cant remember to unload your guns buy a cheap chamber flag or better yet DONT OWN THEM. Your negligence will get someone or yourself killed by the firearm you are giving instructions to work on.

Steve Smith you could look at it that way and I could have edited that part out so narrow minded viewers wouldn’t know I am human and everyone makes mistakes or you could recognize the lesson in the video and the importance of treating all firearms as if they are loaded and appreciate it for that. But for some I guess the lesson is lost.

LOL, sorry you’re lost. There have been, and still is loaded guns stored all over my house from the time I was born till today. If you teach your children to treat all guns as if they are loaded then guns are not a problem. It is the lack of parenting and education. An unloaded gun is useless. Keep yours unloaded and in a locked cabinet with a combination if you like. I will have mine ready and able when they are needed.

WAR KONG LOL, that is one opinion. Funny how after over 50 years of having loaded guns in the house and work bench there hasn't been one accident around me. Must be doing something right. Could be how I was taught at a very young age how to treat guns and alway assume they are loaded. I do see your point and probably in someone else's home that would be very dangerous. Also, I could have edited that out of the video but instead decided to use it as a teaching moment. "Always treat a gun as if it is loaded". I think that is better than saying never have a loaded gun. Appreciate the chat and your concern.
