Can you guys make a video on getting up in light air? Questions I have about lowering the floor of rideable wind range that would be great to see answered are: how far off the wind should one be? Big boards vs. small/ airplane takeoff vs. pumping? Board pump vs. wing pump, and relative timing thereof? Ollie style pump vs. pressurizing the foil?
@blueplanetsurf

That's a good suggestion, thank you. We discuss it in our longer wing foil session videos but we will plan to make one just on pumping up on the foil.

Thanks. Yes, it’s helpful to have searchable vids on the thing that someone is struggling with at the moment. Living in Maine it’ll be critical particularly in summer. I just went down to 110l from a 130L, and I think it’s easier to get up which I wouldn’t have guess when I first started. I’ll add to my questions the best angle of the wing. More forward lift or upward lift?

Great advice. I'm surpirsed that some wings still dont have transparent window to see what's going on around you.

Yes, some manufacturers try to save weight by doing away with the window. It's pretty easy to lift wing overhead to get a good view, but still, better safe than sorry.

Good video Robert. one of the best and most complete I've seen on the net lately. I started following you a long time ago when you started with the sub foil and it seemed like a good idea for those of us who live in the Mediterranean and have few waves. With these new wings, we have a new tool to fly over the waves and the sea. I am very animated and motivated to start in this new sport in which the waves lose importance and the wind is the main propellant. Thank you very much for your effort in maintaining this channel.

It looks really awkward when you gybe. Without the option to switch your feet in the straps you end up facing the wrong way, with your back to the sail, as at 9.03. Would it make sense to have rotating foot straps that pivot on a pin in the board? Would this lead to loss of control? Don't know without trying it but someone should. Oh, I've just realised if your feet pivot through the turn you'd end up sailing the board backwards out of the gybe. Never mind. I'll just go now.
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 4 жыл бұрын
If you use a wide board you can mount two straps in the front like on a windsurfer so you can switch stance. I think rotating straps have been tried in windsurfing but never took off.

The day we shot this was pretty windy for Oahu, about 15-25 knots. We have gone out in under 20 knots and were able to fly with the 4M wings. I need about 15 knots to get it going, once you are up on the foil it does not take much wind to keep it going due to the apparent wind.

How tiring is it on your arms? In windfoiling at least you have a harness.
@blueplanetsurf

The wing feels relatively light in your hands. I felt it more in the legs from pumping the foil. I did not feel like I need a harness, the pressure in the wing is very light compared to windsurfing.

Yes, I said it was easy for me to learn it due to my background. If you don’t have any experience with foiling and wind sports, it will take longer to learn but don’t let that stop you, take it one step at a time and you can learn it. I recommend a foil lesson behind a boat first and practicing wing handling on land before you attempt it on the water.

What size wing should I based on my weight? Is there a general rule of thumb?
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, use a big foil wing to learn as you can lift off and ride at lower speeds. As you progress you can switch to a smaller foil wing with less drag and higher speeds. The hand wing size depends more on wind speed than weight.

@KaydanAidan 5 жыл бұрын
@@blueplanetsurf I don't know which Ozone wing I should get to ride my SUP for now. I am 5 foot 5 inches and weigh about 219. I don't want to get a 6m wing if I am too short for it. I have some background in windsurfing and Kitesurfing so I think I could handle a 5m wing. I don't have a SUP foil board yet but I would like to make use of the windy days and catch waves with a wing and a regular SUP surf board. Should I get a 5m wing or a 6m wing?
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 5 жыл бұрын
@@KaydanAidan I'm 200 lbs and like using the 4M size the most. 5M in lighter wind. So I would recommend the 5M for you if you are only getting one size. There is a good wind speed chart on the Ozone Wasp page.

Great explanation! I am wondering, how physical is it? Is it like wakeboarding? Or another way to put it, how long can your sessions be with this? Can you stay out an hour like with a kiteboard or minutes like a wakeboard? Thanks!
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It’s quite strenuous at first, especially on the legs but as you get better you learn to find a more relaxed stance while up on the foil (weight centered evenly between front and back legs). Holding the wing is not very hard as the drag from the foil is low so there is not a lot of pressure once flying. I can stay out for 1-2 hours now, no problem. It’s always good to stop before you feel exhausted as that’s when injury is most likely to happen. 🤙🏼

@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 4 жыл бұрын
When you are starting out, a bigger, stable board with a big foil wing is best for learning both wing foiling and Stand Up Paddle foiling, something like the 7'6 Easy Foiler, depending on your weight. For prone foiling you can use a smaller board and as you get better you can wing foil on smaller boards too, I currently use the 5'2 Carver Foilboard. These are some of the boards we sell: www.blueplanetsurf.com/sups/foil-sups/

@@d4vidgarr44 It really depends on how much wind you have. I have a 4M and a 5M, when the wind is too light for my 5M, I go surf foiling without a wing. The Ozone Wasp website has a good wind speed/ wing size chart.

@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m only able to go upwind when I’m on the foil. That said you should be able to go back and forth at a 90 degree angle to the wind without a foil. Learn to steer the board by moving the wing. You turn upwind by bringing the wing further back. You may have to step back on the board to be able to do this.

I can't see any allure beyond kite surfing, where one can do much more. Good luck leashing yourself to a Foil .. X-l

One of the advantages of the hand wing is that you can completely depower it and luff it behind you on a wave and turn upwind or downwind with minimal pull from the wing, unlike a kite that always needs some tension on the lines. Kite surfing is awesome but I would not dismiss wing foil surfing until you try it, it's pretty addictive.
