I had a 283 in a 62 station wagon. I spent many nights backed up to the beach in Malibu. I even saw a few celebrities jogging the shoreline. Ahh... the memories of my youth. This 383 you bought should last until there's no more dinosaur blood left on earth. By then we'll lubricate everything with melted Soylent Green.

I had a lock smith working for me awhile back and he told me they use concrete bits for drilling out safes and they also work great on truck frames.

I don't blame you for going the crate motor route Jimmy. Brand new block, heads and internal components with a warranty. It sure makes sense to me. With that 383 you better add some grab handles for the wife because I got a feeling she'll be hanging on for dear life!

Haha, very true! Looking into crate engines for a couple weeks before deciding on this one. Once I saw splayed 4 bolt mains, steel crank and hypertectic pistons at 10:1 compression and a rumpety roller cam, made the leap. I'll do something with the 350 too, but in less of a rush.

Burnouts first! Then the TKX swap... That motor in a 69 Nova and 3.73 gears going 12.0's. They used to require their break in oil for the warranty. Don't know if that's still a thing or not.

The paper work said they recommend it, but I didn't see a requirement. I got Royal Purple conventional 10w30 break in oil.

I have the engine I removed at the machine shop, but since they are super busy they aren't great about returning calls or answering emails so far. It's been 3 weeks, so I ordered this engine to move along with the project. I'll also build the other engine and video that, when that will happen is anybody's guess so far. It will be a mild build, but we will go over the assembly in a couple of videos. :) Thank you very much!

I reckon you've made a really good choice with that 383 Jimmy! Is there a good option for a gearbox that'll stay together with that engine? I love torque and acceleration more than peaky power and top speed so I'd be running it hard from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm myself in 2nd and 3rd. How far over the speed limit would you be at 4,000 in 3rd?

Yeah, my trans goes my credit card gets final casualty mode. It’ll be for a Tremec TKX I believe it’s called. Handles 600 ft lbs. but $2800. :/ With the 4:10 gears about 70 in 3rd with two more gears to go!

Jimmy, great choice for a healthy small block. In regards to the transmission, I have a 1963 Chevy C10 that I built a 400 HP 350 for. My truck came with a very weak Muncie 319 transmission, which is a three speed with overdrive. I ran the truck hard for over 25 years with numerous burnouts and launches. As you know, these trucks do not transfer weight due to the super long trailing arms so the tires would basically spin for as long as my foot was in the gas. What also helped was the truck does not have a posi-traction rear either. Finally two years ago, I broke the synchro drum doing a speed shift from second to third gear at high rpm. I actually had a spare transmission and installed it because I love the overdrive and even the column shifter. To summarize, your transmission will likely take the power ok, but speed shifts could be the killer for the future. Love the channel and the C10.

That is awesome Mitch! It was $6099 at Summit and included free shipping and $500 in Summit bucks/credit. They are price controlled so they are the only ones giving an added credit if bought thru them. Also no interest 18 month financing so left the money in the bank where it belongs. Until the trans pops, haha.

Jimmy you already said you bought the 383 because you like the way it is going to sound. So no you are not going to be able to stay out of it. I have a 383 I built 20 yrs ago in my 79' Caprice. It's very close to the same power numbers you have and I destroyed 2nd gear in a built TH350 3 times! HAHA. Really looking forward to seeing the stroker go in the truck. I have a mild 350 in the 64' C10 and it sounds so good through side exhaust and I am never able to stay out of it!

Yeah, I’ve rebuilt quite a few over the years. But to do it right nowadays cost the same as buying new done with a warranty. I could do it cheaply and have a decent result. But I’m not usually able to cheap out on engine parts. :)

Yeah, I prefer the Carter based carbs for customers vehicles for sure, but for my own the Holley will be fine. Of course however it goes it will all be documented. :)

Use that extra horsepower only when necessary and the drive train should be good. I imagine that the rear tires will break loose quite easily.

Hmmm , how not to put the power down .. I guess it will depend on the road surface..if it hooks up more. Wider rear tires will find the weak links. I wouldn’t be able to hold back.. heck I hold first gear in my Mark VI till 40 mph 😁

I probably would have done this with a bare block. But what worries me is you ordered a 2 piece main seal engine? Or a one piece rear seal? Because the one, will need an adapter. Which will totally mess up your measurements.

It is a 1 piece rear main and I just got the steel flywheel for it, along with the other items that are different. Since it's externally balanced balancer and flywheel.
