3:34 - I've watched "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" so many times and never understood what Spock meant when he said "(Khan's) pattern indicates two dimensional thinking" and what Kirk meant by "Z-minus 10,000 meters." I never thought Spock meant that Khan tended to attack at the same plane every time or that Kirk thought about descending to allow Reliant to pass over Enterprise. Thanks for the explanation!

2 D thinking, he thought like he was sailing a ship with left, right, slow or full speed. I always thought that Kirk doing the z minus 10k was also very 2D. like a sub driver dipping and waiting for a ship to pass over. There are so many more movements available in 3D that could have also cleared their flanks. After all, they weren't sure he was behind them, only suspected it.
@dekirkbride4 жыл бұрын
Spock: Sporatic energy readings... portside aft. Could be an impulse turn. He’s intelligent, but not experienced. His pattern indicates 2 dimensional thinking. Kirk: Full stop. Z-10,000 meters... stand by on photon torpedoes.
@daevydjae3 жыл бұрын
Because Spock made a (quite accurate) guess as to Reliant's movements, I assumed Khan was doing the same with the Enterprise's movements. When the Enterprise stopped and moved "downward" along it's relative Z-axis, Khan might have (incorrectly) deduced about where they should be on a 2D plane (much like a map), but didn't take into account the Z-axis. I also assumed Spock would have been able to tell when the Reliant passed "above" them by continuing his sensor reading, then Kirk "rose" the Enterprise directly behind, timing its "ascent" perfectly with what Spock would give with the sporadic sensors. There are a lot of assumptions, but I only extrapolate based on what I saw over and over the many times I've seen this movie.
@floridaredneck2 ай бұрын
I commented on that before I read this. I was thrilled to see this because I couldn't figure out how they ended up right behind the Reliant. This animation explains all of that in great detail. I'm going to view again soon and listen for the "Z-minus" line more closely. It appears to be so subtle in the film that those paying attention to other things (like me) might not pick up on it. I heard the 2-deminsional line in the film, but it did not sink in that it meant to think in 3-D to outthink Khan. You see that they did, but it was not stressed that it was what they were doing unless you are detailed oriented.

Space battles in sci-fi have always been a bit over intensive on the effects. Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, all of these had 'lots' of lights flying around and that can often draw attention away from the drama, which the LAST thing the writers want. In my opinion, this is STILL the best Star Trek movie because they didn't NEED lots of phasers and photons going off to make it suspenseful. When Kirk ignored regs and let Khan get a cheap shot in, it almost physically hurt me to watch. He screwed up and it cost a lot. It cost Scotty his kinsman! And then... When Kirk gave the order 'Z minus 2000, stand by photon torpedoes;' he didn't 'know' what Khan would do. Yes, Spock had extrapolated Khan's lack of three dimensional combat experience, but that was a HELL of a risk for the damaged Enterprise. The Reliant was still better armed and Khan was smarter than Kirk. Even his two dimensional moves could have been a trick. Then the music hits as the Enterprise rises from the nebulae gases and even as your eyes are processing the wounded ship sneaking up behind the Reliant, you 'know'. This battle is OVER!
@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 Жыл бұрын
@@dwrdwlsn5 that music totally hits! In the original, and in this version too! Probably my favorite part. With Chekhov being medically cleared for duty(despite all the PTSD from the ear wig) at his old station, targeting in manual mode, he wasn't going to miss.(Sulu was a great pilot, but a mediocre gunner). Khan wasn't really that Smart, he had the same flaws as any human, only blatant mistakes gave him an advantage, in Space Seed and TWOK. But the movie wasn't about it's various flaws, whether it was the inconsistent blood spot on Kirk's bib, or the various plot and scientific nonsense(I could write a 50 page essay on the latter)...it was all about the *music* timed perfectly with the cinematography. Horner was a genius! 🖖

@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 The music hits so many ways, I could write an essay just about that. One thing I always loved about Trek was that each of the crew had their own skills. This is THE best video, I have ever watched on KZbin. It truly connects with me on so many levels. When I was a kid, I made little paper games of the enterprise, reliant, birds of prey, etc. and I would have their shields as little dots. I know it was in this movie on a console screen, but it is perfect in this. I love the movie voices at all the different parts. Absolutely loved of the music throughout. I loved how the destruction of the reliant and losing the nacelle at the battle of the mutara nebula. The two things that blew me away was towards the end. And honestly I did not see anything like this coming. In the movie, the enterprise does have a weird warp away from the explosion. And it truly did not explain what was happening behind the enterprise. I think there was three scenes just like this video interpreted the enterprise escaping. The enterprise escaping and the nebula disappearing from the explosion was so cool to watch. But, the part that blew me away was, the creation of the Genesis planet. Wow! Stand up and applause!!! This was really God-damned cool!! Well done, sir! When I was a kid I used to tell this story from the same perspective, only it was the 1980’s so it was in drawn storybook form, with some animation by flipping the ends of card-stock with imagery on the ends. So this was a total blast from the past.

It would have taken no effort for Kirk to raise shields. In fact, Yellow alert automatically raises shields in TNG. Everytime I watch STWOK I hope he will raise shields before the attack. LOL
@twentysevenlitres4 жыл бұрын
I laughed at that, I do the same thing sometimes! What gets me though is that photon torpedos are a very powerful weapon. Without shields (both TWOK and both ships in TSFS) the ships should be annihilated shouldn't they?
@Penryn873 жыл бұрын
Well.. as they say, regulations are written in blood. Shields being raised on yellow alert could be as a result of this very event.

This. Is. Awesome. I have seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan over a hundred times. Literally. From the original theatrical release, to the first home release paying $89.99 on then-state-of-the-art VHS, and on the big screen again for the 25th anniversary. So yeah, I'm a fan of this film. I've imagined the details of the battle scenes every single time and hundreds more. What you've made here is fantastic (The music being the only exception, a truly minor one in the amazing work here) Thanks for adding another dimension to my cherished memory.
