I'm 30, have been putting coins in the jar until a bit later on in my 20's I started seeing Lincoln wheat cents. I didn't really consider taking better care of them until this year. That's when a whole new world opened up to me. Part of me getting into the hobby is do thanks to watching American Pickers and my best friend Ashley who along with her husband are leadership entrepreneurs. Her and I met up for coffee to catch up and she instilled the idea of investing in gold and silver. This is something that I have been planning in the past and it just felt right to get started on my silver investment this year. Boy was I right to listen to my gut on that one. My current focus is as follows: 1oz American Eagle coins, Morgans (which I buy for gifts usually. Morgans make great gifts especially for friends who are not American.) Pre 1960's 90% silver 50c pieces. When I can afford it I buy other coins of interest. I'm trying to mainly focus on silver American eagles and pre 1960's 50c pieces. I have a lot that needs to be decided upon. Just recently I bought a Canadian 1oz silver maple leaf and just decided that I didn't need it after all because I didn't have any sizable capsule to put it in to keep it air tight. I decided to sell it on eBay and sold it for one dollar more than what I paid for it. I was more surprised by how fast it sold on eBay. This have me another decision to ponder on if I ever want to or need to sell any of my coins whatever the reason may be. My point is that it's never too late to start. I'm now looking into signing up for one of those bullion IRA's because the way I see it and knowing what I have learned this far about our currency the money I make today is not being backed up by solid precious metal like gold and silver. So to me it doesn't matter where you start. It's only too late when your close to your death bed.
@coincrazy97755 жыл бұрын
Smart! Ya know even if it seems kinda pointless just making a buck here and there on like that silver maple oz. You're building a sellers portfolio and reputation as a vendor of silver and of coins. Keep a slow trickle of coins coming in and out and one day if you ever need to unload your collection, you won't have to try very hard.

Hi there. I started about a month ago. I'm twelve, and I have assembled a complete *type* set *(not all dates and mint marks, but all types)* of Lincoln cents as well as an Indian Head from 1902. I will focus on collecting a complete set of Lincoln cents later (some coins, such as the 1909-S VDB, are quite expensive, and the series is a bit long). Currently, I'm collecting Roosevelt dimes and Jefferson nickels, since most can be found in my spare change (as well as my dad's coin stash, which he allows me to search through), and rarely do any of them cost a great deal of money. I'm collecting the ones from spare change first. Now, I'm also gonna get a full set of Ike and Anthony dollars, plus some 40% silver ones and some extra proofs, and it just fits under my budget of $250 (shipping and everything). All of them are about AU-50 or higher (yes, I did a LOT of research, like I always do when I'm very interested in something). Most of them are between AU-50 and MS-65. The proofs are all about PF-65 to PF-70. And you're probably asking how I get so much money for a young collector. Well, I always ask for money on holidays. And I get between $75 and $150. Also, my parents owe me about $225-$275 in allowance, since they haven't paid it for a year. At $5 a week. So, anything that I can't pay for is less debt that they owe me. Aside from that, do you think I'm off to an OK start?

I am 19 and have been collecting american pennies for the past 9 years. One of the things talked about was how hard it is to collect when you have a shortage of funds. I was wondering is there some sort of "coin swap meet" for people just looking to trade? Coin shows and conventions typically get too expensive in a hurry.
@oldschoolrr60775 жыл бұрын
@Lucas Haskins - For what it is worth, if you live in a relative urban area, see if there is a coin club somewhere in your area. You can check the American Numismatic Association to see if there is one near you. As far as funds, two suggestions I have is to recycle cans and bottles, if you live in a state that charges a fee when you purchase them. People dump this stuff on the ground, everywhere. The other is to collect and turn in metal (Copper, Aluminum, Lead, Brass etc.) to a refiner or metal recycler.

I know this video was made seven years ago, but I'm really glad it was, and that it's still here. I started collecting when I was very young--around ten years old, and I'm nineteen now--and I honestly started off not knowing this was an actual thing. I merely picked up coins from all over for the stories behind them. Not necessarily vital pieces of history, too. Sometimes I'd just be amazed by a coin that has passed through someone I idolized, or a coin that apparently survived a fire, and such. Now I actually know what to look for, both in the sense of an investment for the future, as well as historical value, and this video just gives me more fuel for more.

I've always considered being a coin collector like being a student of currency through history. From the first clay tablets through to the modern age, currency fascinates me. I always get a sense of wonder when I hold a coin from another age; Who used it? What did it buy? I collected my first coin when I was 11 in 1968. It was not a particularly valuable coin then or now,(1950 Canadian quarter in mint condition) but it ignited a life long passion. The tips you present in this video are excellent. Education is key in my view. Know what you're buying. Even if you over pay for something you want, as long as you know what your getting, you know what you're doing.

Thanks for this. There is one very useful aspect of the Red Book and I would highly recommend that new collectors use it in addition to the information available online. In the book you can quickly scan through prices for the entire series of a coin, which allows you to easily identify the most valuable and rare coins in a set. This can be extremely useful to build your knowledge of the most sought after coins and to plan the way you build your set (often it makes sense to start a set with the more expensive/rare coins). It also includes a lot of historical information about the evolution of coins and allows new collectors to browse to find coins that they may not have known existed but that can become a new favorite coin. You can see progressions and patterns by browsing the physical book. None of this is possible through checking the price of online auctions. Of course you should always check these internet prices when determining how much you want to spend on a coin or planning what you can expect to receive from a sale. But the Red Book is an invaluable resource in my opinion. Happy collecting!

For the kids in the US that are just starting coin collecting, I started coin roll hunting in 1970. I only had a few dollars to work with. I recommend starting with pennies the way I did. The average 10 to 12-year-old doesn't have very much spare money to work with. Buy a 50 cent role of pennies and search for dates that you don't have. Outside of a few key dates the majority of your collection can be found in circulation. It is fun to find that coin you don't have,

Great Video. I've just been selling and trading coins back and forth for three years. I've only dealt with Morgan Silver Dollars, Silver Eagles, and Peace Dollars. I am starting to expand into the other coins.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LOVE this hobby, but I am so INTIMIDATED when it comes to selling my collection because I DON'T know where to go when i find a coin or bill that someone wants, so i can offer it! HOW do i start? i NEED to SHOW someone my coins and bills...I have birthday notes, ladders, and star notes plus a HUGE collection of pennies 1950's and up, 1960 and up quarters, 1940 & 42 nickels, and all years in between, a TON of old dimes, Ike silver dollar, president coins, 3 saagaweas, geeeeesh Shawn,I've collected since I was in my 20's and I'm 50 now and I have a LOT of coins that can help people finish their collections I believe...I'm sorry for the long message but i wrote you on facebook messenger and didnt hear back yet, and was just getting ansy lol...Thank you in advance, Shawn!!!

I got into it by stacking silver, then proofs , then morgans. If you want more collectors advocate for stacking silver as an investment. It's a logical progression

Another tip: don’t clean them other than a good rinse. Don’t use vinegar or baking soda, just use water and some dish soap to get the loose dirt off without ruining the coin. Take it from a guy who ruined his whole collection with vinegar. I still regret that.

Number 1 tip: collect for fun & enjoyment, not for profit Most people in the hobby do not make a profit, and just keeping a coin locked away 30 years will not make it more valuable Number 2: educate yourself... don't spend money buying anything in life that you don't know about (unless you have money to burn)
@johnblizzard60506 жыл бұрын
MD P I beg to differ with 1 point, if I store my ms 2017-p pennies, in about 30 years it will be hard to find ms pennies from 2017-p there is profit you can make even if the price doesn't go up, keeping ms 66 and up coins of certain years are worth it
@johnblizzard60506 жыл бұрын
Now if you have the eye for ms 66 and up coins and can be honest with yourself and the guidelines that make these coins ms 66 and up ,you can make for sure profit, trust me :) ,it's not overnight money but it's a for sure for 25 plus years from now,also pcgs photo grade and facts app and red book are you best friends
@isabellarussell12846 жыл бұрын
MD P I agree very much, people make it all about the money and prices of the coins. If you like expensive coins that is great but new coin collectors do not need to feel like buying the expensive things is what you are supposed to do.
