I've wondered if ending up in prison invalidated their deal, even though the band is playing at the end of the movie. I also wasn't sure if the whole band had to go to jail, or if it's just Jake and Elwood and everyone else is just there on a visitor pass but wear the prison suit as their costume. I don't really see why the band would need to go to prison when they're not involved in anything but unknowingly stealing beer and knowing where the fugitives are/letting them escape. That could be covered with a fine or community service.

@@88mphsss The band definitely went to prison but on shorter sentences. Matt Murphy's wife mentioned this and in the original script, Blue Lou said he did 18 months. The band's charges were probably aiding and abetting. Jake violated his parole and was an accessory to Elwood's long list of vehicular crimes. The record producer who advanced them $10K probably got a recording out of them but from in prison or maybe he got ripped off. Either way, they paid Ray $1,400 and each member of the band got $450.

@@RoosterMontgomery Driving to events separately serves as enough reasonable doubt on knowing what they were up to, in my opinion. At least about the final chase! Although Willie saw them leave so I guess that could be used against him if anyone saw him gesture to them. Blue Lou being an ex-con would actually make a lot of sense, even if everyone else wasn't. He worked behind the scenes at the restaurant, and in the sequel he can't sell anything but retains his job anyway. Matt could be looking out for him because he knows the alternative isn't good. I just noticed the parallel between someone working in solitude and not being able to connect as a salesman. 🤣

Notice how just after Cab throws Elwood down the stairs, he then throws the briefcase at him? But it looks like the briefcase was waiting outside the entrance of the building the whole time. Why would Elwood leave it there and not take it in with him? It kinda doesn't make sense.

They had a decent idea for Cab's character, but I feel it was executed poorly. Cab being born out of an affair doesn't make Curtis' character look good. This is how I think it should have been handled: Curtis had a wife, long before he came to the orphanage, they had Cab, Curtis & his wife had a falling out & divorced, she took the kid with her, & that's what drove Curtis to the orphanage, rather than Cab's mom having an affair with Curtis & hiding it from the husband.

Indeed; I always felt the same too. That backstory would fit Curtis and be a good reason to springboard him into being a better guy. Plus it would make Joe's angst more real and relateable. Instead they have Elwood being a jerk and forcing him to find out the sad truth from his mom because he was forced into it.. not a good look. No wonder Chamberlain hated Elwood for most of the movie! It all made Curtis look like a sleezebag which was a slap to Cab's face in a solid way because he didn't play him like that in the original. Granted he was kind of a jerk when he had to be but he did it to motivate Jake and Elwood to be better. He helped them promote the show and kept the band from quitting; just a loveable character. Curtis and Callaway didn't deserve that. Honestly I felt Morton wasn't give enough pull like he should have had.. they coulda honestly left out Goodman's character and the movie woulda benefited because Cabell woulda had more time to shine. Honestly Joe fit the band better than John did imo and I loved John in this but he wasn't a great soul voice like what Joe had. All Goodman really did was give the movie star power but it made it have too many characters and a mess.

@@efan2012 I think Goodman was always going to be in the movie, as he'd been performing as a Blues Brother with Dan & Jim Belushi since '95. His story was poor too. He was just a bartender that started singing with Elwood & just kinda went along with him. I've always liked Goodman, so I was rather disappointed with his role in this film. Something else interesting about Cab's character is that he was invented because Jim Belushi couldn't be in the sequel. Jim would've been the "long long brother". I personally am glad that didn't happen because I don't think it would've gelled well in the film canon, at least for me. Jim pretty much only became a Blues Brother because John died, no disrespect to him, he does a fine job as one, but when John was alive, there was no implication that Jim would join the band or that Jake had a biological brother, & if they made Jim the long lost brother, it would ruin the experience of the first movie. All you'd be thinking while watching it is, "Oh, if only they were all together, then it'd be complete." I do enjoy his live shows with Dan, in my mind they're in their own separate canon (man, that sounds nerdy), but I wouldn't have liked him in the movie.
